WEC and IMSA share the same modern prototype ecosystem, but they are not the same championship. The FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) calls its premier class Hypercar and its GT class LMGT3. The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship uses four classes: GTP, LMP2, GTD PRO, and GTD. WEC centers its season on six-hour international races and the 24 Hours of Le Mans; IMSA combines short sprints with major North American endurance events. Their driver rules also diverge: WEC’s Le Mans entries use three-driver crews, while IMSA changes the required lineup according to race length and class.
WEC and IMSA at a glance
The easiest way to separate the championships is to compare their class names, calendars, and sporting priorities rather than assuming that similarly shaped cars are racing under identical rules.

| Question | WEC | IMSA WeatherTech |
|---|---|---|
| Top prototype class | Hypercar | GTP |
| GT class name | LMGT3 | GTD PRO and GTD |
| Other prototype class | LMP2 is part of the 2026 Le Mans eligibility structure | LMP2 is a regular championship class |
| Typical headline race rhythm | Six-hour races, plus the 24 Hours of Le Mans | Sprints mixed with six-, 10–12-hour and 24-hour endurance races |
| Geographic emphasis | International calendar | North American championship footprint |
| Qualifying format | Separate 12-minute class sessions, then a 10-minute Hyperpole for the fastest 10 | Format and timing are set in event supplementary regulations |
Both series use cars derived from the LMH (Le Mans Hypercar) and LMDh (Le Mans Daytona h) technical ecosystem at the prototype level. That shared foundation makes cross-series competition possible, but each organizer still applies its own class names, sporting rules, calendar, and driver requirements.
How WEC Hypercar compares with IMSA GTP
One technical family, two sporting identities
WEC Hypercars are homologated under either LMH or LMDh regulations. The FIA’s 2026 regulation index lists the current LMH and LMDh technical rules. IMSA’s GTP class is the American championship’s top-level expression of the modern hybrid prototype formula.

An LMDh car can be eligible for both championships when it meets each series’ sporting and technical requirements. LMH is the other WEC-legal route to the Hypercar category. The practical result is a common visual and engineering language across major endurance racing, not a single unified rulebook.
What the GTP label tells you
GTP is an IMSA class name, not a separate replacement for LMH or LMDh. IMSA’s current class explanation lists Acura, Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac, and Porsche among the manufacturers represented in the 2026 GTP roster; the Aston Martin entry is identified as non-hybrid in that listing. Manufacturer participation is season-specific, so an entry list is the authoritative way to confirm a particular year’s field.
What the Hypercar label tells you
Hypercar identifies WEC’s premier category regardless of whether an individual car is built to LMH or LMDh rules. In a WEC entry list, the technical route and the car’s homologation matter more than the badge on the class column: two Hypercars can arrive through different regulatory paths while competing in the same WEC category.

- Class names differ: Hypercar is the WEC label; GTP is the IMSA label.
- Eligibility is series-specific: A car that is legal in one championship must still satisfy the other championship’s sporting procedures.
- Balance and event rules belong to each organizer: Shared regulations do not make the race formats, qualifying, points, or driver rules identical.
How the GT classes differ
WEC LMGT3
LMGT3 uses the FIA GT3 platform with WEC-specific sporting and technical adaptations. The category is built around production-based GT machinery rather than purpose-designed prototypes. WEC entry lists show FIA driver-category letters, and LMGT3 crews generally combine professional and gentleman drivers.
Because the WEC class is called LMGT3, it should not be treated as a completely separate type of car from the GT3 machinery seen elsewhere. The important distinction is the championship’s adaptations and sporting structure.
IMSA GTD PRO
GTD PRO is IMSA’s GT3-based class for factory-supported teams and professional driver lineups. It occupies the professional end of IMSA’s GT field while retaining the underlying FIA GT3 car concept.
IMSA GTD
GTD also uses FIA GT3 cars, but its purpose is the broader amateur/pro-am GT category. Driver-rating rules and team composition therefore become a larger part of the sporting identity than they are in a fully professional GT field.

Where LMP2 fits
WEC and the 24 Hours of Le Mans
The 2026 Le Mans supplementary provisions list Hypercar LMH, Hypercar LMDh, LMP2, and LMGT3 as eligible categories. The provisional 2026 Le Mans entry list contains 19 LMP2 competitors. That makes LMP2 highly visible at Le Mans even though the class is not presented as WEC’s season-long top category.
Le Mans entry lists can change before the event. Treat the provisional list as a snapshot of the announced field, not a guarantee that every named driver or car will start.
IMSA LMP2
IMSA describes LMP2 as a closed-cockpit prototype class built by approved constructors and eligible for other global series, including WEC and Le Mans. In IMSA, LMP2 is a regular WeatherTech class with its own driver-rating restrictions and a Bronze-driver requirement in the races covered by the 2026 sporting regulations.
Why an LMP2 car is not a slower GTP
LMP2 and GTP are both prototypes, but they serve different purposes. GTP is the headline manufacturer-backed category using the modern LMH/LMDh ecosystem. LMP2 is a customer-oriented, approved-constructor formula designed to provide a standardized prototype platform and a distinct professional/amateur sporting balance.

Six-hour standard, 24-hour centerpiece
WEC’s 2026 schedule is organized around six-hour races at Imola, Spa-Francorchamps, São Paulo, Fuji, Barcelona, and Monza. The exception is the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which serves as the season’s defining endurance event.
| WEC 2026 event type | Locations identified on the official schedule | Race length |
|---|---|---|
| Regular rounds | Imola; Spa-Francorchamps; São Paulo; Fuji; Barcelona; Monza | Six hours |
| Le Mans | 24 Hours of Le Mans | 24 hours |
This repeated six-hour distance gives WEC a comparatively consistent endurance rhythm. Teams prepare for long stints, traffic between prototypes and GT cars, and an international sequence of circuits, while Le Mans demands a much longer continuous effort.
What WEC qualifying looks like
WEC separates its qualifying by class. Hypercar and LMGT3 each run a 12-minute initial session. The fastest 10 in each class then advance to a 10-minute Hyperpole session. Pole position is worth one additional championship point.

- Initial class session: Hypercar and LMGT3 run their own 12-minute qualifying session.
- Cut to 10: The 10 fastest cars in that class progress to Hyperpole.
- Hyperpole: Those 10 cars receive a 10-minute session to decide the class’s top starting position.
- Championship reward: Pole position earns one extra point.
The format reduces the chance that a GT car’s traffic or a prototype’s traffic determines every starting position. It also gives each class its own qualifying contest rather than treating the multi-class field as one undifferentiated group.
IMSA’s race format and 2026 schedule shape
A mixed sprint-and-endurance championship
IMSA’s 2026 regulations state that race duration varies and is specified in each event’s supplementary regulations. The season combines the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the Sebring 12 Hours, shorter street and sprint races, the six-hour Watkins Glen round, and Petit Le Mans.
That mix changes how teams approach a championship weekend. A short race places a premium on immediate pace and fewer driver changes; a marquee endurance race magnifies traffic management, night running, reliability, and the timing of every stop. IMSA therefore does not have one standard distance comparable to WEC’s recurring six-hour format.
| IMSA event pattern | Examples identified for 2026 | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| 24-hour endurance | Rolex 24 at Daytona | Longest continuous race format in the championship |
| 12-hour endurance | Sebring 12 Hours | Requires the 10–12-hour driver-lineup rules |
| Six-hour endurance | Watkins Glen | Uses the six-hour lineup rules |
| Shorter races | Street and sprint events | Uses the under-six-hour lineup rules |
| Endurance classic | Petit Le Mans | Runs within IMSA’s endurance-oriented portion of the calendar |
Because event supplementary regulations specify the final duration and procedures, check the document for the individual race rather than inferring the format from the championship name alone.
How many drivers share a WEC or IMSA car?
WEC: three-seat endurance crews
The official 2026 Le Mans entry list uses three driver positions per car and marks every driver with an FIA category letter. A prototype entry might therefore show three professional drivers, while LMGT3 entries commonly combine Bronze, Silver, and Platinum-rated drivers according to the class’s sporting intent.

For example, the provisional Peugeot Le Mans listing names Paul Di Resta, Stoffel Vandoorne, and Nick Cassidy together in one three-driver crew. Since the list is provisional, lineups can change before the race.
IMSA: the number depends on distance and class
IMSA’s 2026 Sporting Regulations do not use one driver count for every WeatherTech race. The requirements vary by race length and, in six-hour events, by class.

| 10–12 hours | Three drivers | Three drivers; at least one Bronze, with Platinum/Gold limits | Three drivers | Three drivers |
| Six hours | Two to three drivers | Three drivers; rating restrictions and at least one Bronze | Two to three drivers | Three drivers; rating restrictions |
| Under six hours | Two drivers | Two drivers; rating restrictions and at least one Bronze | Two drivers | Two drivers; rating restrictions |
That is why a two-driver IMSA sprint entry and a three-driver IMSA endurance entry can both be correct. The race’s published duration and supplementary regulations determine which row applies.
FIA driver ratings: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze
The shared categorization system
WEC and IMSA both use FIA driver categorization: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The labels describe the driver’s sporting classification, but the way each championship applies them differs by class and race format.
Recommended Free Tools
WEC’s use of categories
WEC entry lists display the category letter beside each driver. In LMGT3, the visible pattern is often a professional driver paired with one or more gentleman drivers, reflecting the class’s pro-am orientation. Hypercar crews are generally built around professional prototype drivers, while the published list remains the definitive source for a particular car.
IMSA’s restrictions
IMSA applies explicit lineup limits in LMP2 and GTD. LMP2 requires at least one Bronze driver in the race-length scenarios listed above and limits Platinum and Gold participation. GTD also retains rating restrictions, while GTD PRO is intended for professional lineups.
These rules are not a minor administrative detail. They affect who can qualify, how long each driver can remain in the car, and which combinations a team may legally enter. Always read the current sporting regulations alongside the entry list when evaluating a lineup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the championships feel different to watch
WEC: international endurance continuity
WEC’s international calendar and repeated six-hour distance make the championship feel like a traveling endurance series. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is not simply another round in the public imagination; it is the central event around which the category’s identity is built. Hypercar and LMGT3 qualifying are separated, and the season repeatedly returns to long-form race management.

IMSA: variety within one North American season
IMSA offers a different cadence. The same championship can move from a 24-hour opener to a 12-hour classic, then to a six-hour race and shorter street or sprint events. The result is more variation in how much time each driver spends in the car and how heavily a single mistake can weigh in a short race.

Neither series is simply “better”
WEC is the clearer choice for someone seeking an international calendar, a six-hour baseline, and the Le Mans-centered Hypercar story. IMSA is the better fit for a viewer who wants changing race lengths, North American circuits, and a championship in which sprint racing and endurance classics coexist.
How to read an entry list without confusing the classes
- Start with the championship column: Hypercar and LMGT3 indicate WEC; GTP, LMP2, GTD PRO, and GTD indicate IMSA WeatherTech.
- Check the technical label: A WEC Hypercar may be LMH or LMDh; an IMSA GTP car belongs to the championship’s top prototype category.
- Separate GT from prototype: LMGT3, GTD PRO, and GTD are GT3-based production-derived cars; Hypercar, GTP, and LMP2 are prototypes.
- Count the driver slots: Three positions are shown for the 2026 Le Mans entries, while IMSA’s required number depends on race length and class.
- Read the rating letters: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze identify FIA categories and can reveal mandatory pro-am combinations.
- Verify the document date: A provisional entry list is subject to change, and sporting regulations or supplementary event documents can be amended.
Common misconceptions, corrected
“Hypercar and GTP are identical classes.”
They are closely related top-level prototype categories, not identical sporting classes. Hypercar is WEC’s name; GTP is IMSA’s name. Their shared LMH/LMDh ecosystem explains why cars can appear in both championships, but each series retains separate regulations and procedures.
“LMGT3 is a different type of car from GTD.”
Both are based on FIA GT3 machinery. LMGT3 includes WEC-specific adaptations, while IMSA divides its GT3 field between professional GTD PRO and broader pro-am GTD competition.
“Every IMSA race needs three drivers.”
Only IMSA’s 10–12-hour races require three drivers in every class. Six-hour races allow two to three in GTP and GTD PRO but require three in LMP2 and GTD. Races under six hours require two in every class, with LMP2 and GTD restrictions still applying.
“LMP2 is absent from WEC.”
LMP2 is included in the 2026 Le Mans eligibility structure, and the provisional entry list contains 19 LMP2 competitors. Its role is more prominent as a regular IMSA class than as a named WEC season-long headline category.
Which championship should you follow?
- Choose WEC if your priority is the Hypercar battle, an international calendar, six-hour races, LMGT3, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans as the season’s centerpiece.
- Choose IMSA if you want GTP plus LMP2, GTD PRO, and GTD in one field, a North American calendar, and race distances that range from sprints to 24 hours.
- Follow both if you want to see how LMH/LMDh prototypes operate under different sporting environments and how the same GT3 foundation is organized as LMGT3, GTD PRO, or GTD.
For any specific 2026 race, confirm the latest entry list, sporting regulations, and event supplementary regulations. Those documents determine the final drivers, eligibility, duration, and lineup restrictions for that event.
