Ford’s 2024 patent application describes a system for law-enforcement vehicles to detect suspected speeding and share related information with officers or infrastructure. It does not show that Ford consumer cars report drivers to police, or that the system has been built or deployed.

What did Ford file?

Ford Global Technologies LLC filed U.S. patent application US20240239352A1, titled “Systems and methods for detecting speeding violations.” The application was filed January 12, 2023, and published July 18, 2024. Its examples center on a first vehicle used for law enforcement. Read the published application on Google Patents.

A published patent application is a proposal describing possible embodiments, not proof that a working product exists. The filing does not establish that police departments use the system, that it is in production, or that speeding tickets are issued automatically. Google Patents labels the application abandoned, but cautions that its status summary is not a legal conclusion; a definitive legal-status determination requires checking the USPTO file history.

How would the proposed system work?

The application describes possible steps in which an officer selects a suspected speeding vehicle and the law-enforcement vehicle uses radar or lidar to measure speed, with cameras capturing images. Image analysis could help distinguish the vehicle using details such as its make, model, year, registration plate, color, damage, stickers, or accessories.

Bushnell Velocity Speed Gun
  • Instantaneous Speed Measurements: Provides accurate speed readings from 10 to 200 mph, ideal for a variety of sporting and automotive applications.
  • User-Friendly Design: Easy-to-use pistol grip design for one-handed operation, with a large clear display for quick reading of speeds
  • Versatile Functionality: Suitable for tracking speed in sports like baseball, tennis, and auto racing, as well as for monitoring traffic speeds
  • Portable and Durable: Lightweight construction and durable materials make it convenient to carry to any event or location
  • Bushnell Reliability: Trusted by professionals, the Bushnell Velocity Speed Gun offers consistent performance backed by a leading brand in speed radar technology

The system could assemble a record with information such as measured speed, images, identifying features, timestamps, and location. The patent describes possible ways to share that record or related information:

  • Send it to a server for traffic-violation information and possible court use.
  • Share information with another law-enforcement vehicle.
  • Send information and a tracking request to roadside infrastructure.

Some examples describe officers deciding whether to pursue or take action, and enforcement vehicles cooperating in a pursuit. These are scenarios in the application, not verified functions in deployed vehicles.

NET PLAYZ Speed Radar, Muti-Sports Radar Gun (Hands-Free) Measure Speed Sensors for Baseball Softball Tennis Soccer Hockey Lacrosse Handball | Training Aids / Gadget Gifts
  • High Accuracy & Wide Detection Range - Measures speeds up to 199 kph (150 mph). For best accuracy, ensure the ball flight passes within the optimal measurement zone, approximately 20–50 ft from the radar, or position the radar about 45° beside the batter when measuring swing motion. In addition to baseball, it also detects speeds in soccer, hockey, tennis, and lacrosse.
  • Hands-Free Operation - Unlike traditional gun-style radars that require a second person to operate, this model allows true solo use. Simply set up the unit on its tripod and start training immediately, ideal for individual or team sessions. The stable, hands-free setup ensures consistent measurements and lets players focus fully on their drills.
  • Voice Announcement Feature - Exclusive built-in speaker announces every speed reading in real time, allowing uninterrupted solo practice. Especially helpful when visibility is limited or when users are not wearing glasses, enabling effortless performance tracking.
  • Data-Driven Training - Integrated data logging automatically records the last ten speed readings. Review and compare results to identify progress and patterns, providing data-driven insights for systematic skill development and long-term improvement.
  • Large LED Display for Day & Night Use - The 4.7" LED display is larger than most consumer sports radars (typically 1.2"–4.3"), providing bright red digits that remain clearly visible in both daylight and low-light training conditions.

Is this about ordinary Ford cars reporting drivers?

The patent’s examples focus on law-enforcement vehicles, not consumer Ford cars reporting their owners or other motorists. Ford’s spokesperson told The Record that the idea was specific to law-enforcement vehicles such as the Ford Police Interceptor, and would automate a capability law enforcement already uses. That reported explanation is not a product announcement or evidence of deployment. The Record’s report says Ford provided the statement by email.

What privacy concerns does the idea raise?

If implemented, the described workflow could combine speed measurements with images, vehicle-identifying details, time, and location, then share information with enforcement vehicles, servers, or roadside units. That raises practical questions about who can access the records, how long they are retained, how suspected violations are reviewed, and what notice or challenge process applies. The patent does not establish answers to those policy questions.
