The 2GR-FKS made a compelling case for the naturally aspirated V6: smooth, linear power paired with sophisticated fuel injection and variable valve timing. “We miss it” is an enthusiast’s point of view, not a measured consensus—but Toyota’s 2024 Camry V6 offers a clear example of what that sentiment is about, and the 2025 Camry’s move to a hybrid-only lineup marks a specific change in that model’s story.
What made the 2GR-FKS more than a big V6
The 2GR-FKS was developed from Toyota’s earlier 2GR-FE, but it was not simply the same engine with a new label. A 2015 paper published by SAE International describes a redesigned 3.5-liter V6 using a modified D-4S system that can select between direct and port fuel injection, along with variable valve technology and exhaust-port cooling. The paper, “Development of 3.5L V6 Gasoline Direct Injection Engine – ESTEC 2GR-FKS/FXS”, was authored by J. Matsui, H. Koyama, Y. Goto and H. Kawai.
D-4S is the standout detail: the engine can use both direct injection into the cylinders and port injection upstream of the intake valves. Toyota’s technical document, “2GR-FKS Engine Features Overview,” also lists D-4S and an Atkinson-cycle feature. That document is hosted by a Toyota 4Runner forum rather than Toyota’s own site, so it is best treated as Toyota technical material in a reposted copy, not a current official product page.
These systems reflect a design that had to balance power delivery and efficiency, rather than relying on displacement alone. Toyota’s 2024 Camry announcement identifies the V6 as a 24-valve DOHC engine with VVT-iW on the intake and VVT-i on the exhaust. Toyota says the intake timing can switch to an Atkinson cycle—a strategy that changes valve timing to support efficiency under appropriate operating conditions.

The 2024 Camry put numbers to the V6’s appeal
In Toyota’s published specification for the U.S. 2024 Camry 3.5-liter V6, output is 301 hp at 6,600 rpm and 267 lb-ft of torque at 4,700 rpm. Those are Camry figures, not universal ratings for every 2GR-FKS installation. Toyota’s announcement also describes this Camry engine’s D-4S injection and valve-timing setup. Its characterization of the car as a “gem” is promotional language, but the underlying specifications make the configuration concrete.
A naturally aspirated V6 delivers power without a turbocharger, and some enthusiasts value the resulting straightforward, progressive response and the character of a six-cylinder engine as it revs. Those are subjective reasons to miss it, not a claim that every driver prefers a V6 or that this engine is objectively superior to a newer powertrain.

Why the V6 Camry is now a memory
Toyota’s U.S. lineup provides a clear, bounded example. The 2024 Camry offered the 3.5-liter V6; Toyota announced the 2025 Camry as exclusively hybrid, powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder. That is a change in the Camry lineup between those model years—not evidence that the 2GR-FKS ended production or disappeared from every Toyota and Lexus vehicle or market.
| U.S. Camry model year | Powertrain described by Toyota | V6 available? |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 3.5-liter V6; 301 hp at 6,600 rpm and 267 lb-ft at 4,700 rpm, per Toyota’s model specification | Yes |
| 2025 | Exclusively hybrid, with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, according to Toyota | No |
The contrast is not a claim that the hybrid is a worse car. It shows why the V6 Camry has become a point of nostalgia: a familiar midsize sedan configuration gave way to a lineup built around a different engine and hybrid system.

How the 2GR-FKS differs from the 2GR-FE
The SAE paper establishes the development relationship: the 2GR-FKS/FXS was redesigned from the 2GR-FE foundation and incorporated a modified D-4S system, variable valve technology and exhaust-port cooling. That supports a useful high-level distinction—newer injection and engine-management features—not a complete specification-by-specification comparison. Toyota’s 2024 Camry material supplies details for that particular 2GR-FKS application, but it does not establish equivalent figures for every 2GR-FE vehicle.

Do not infer oil requirements or service quantities from the engine code alone. One Toyota/Lexus owner manual for a 2GR-FKS application specifies SAE 0W-20 and gives a reference drain-and-refill capacity of 5.7 US qt (5.4 L) with filter. The manual’s publication date is not stated in the retrieved material, and those figures apply to that specific vehicle manual—not every 2GR-FKS installation. Check the owner’s manual for the exact year, model and market before buying oil or performing service.
