Announced on August 29, 2024, the partnership paired Wayve’s AI Driver with Uber’s mobility marketplace and automaker relationships. Later announcements through August 12, 2026 added major financing and planned London and Tokyo robotaxi programs, but those deployments remained prospective and subject to technical, regulatory and operational approval.
Wayve did not get acquired by Uber, and the companies did not announce an immediate driverless robotaxi launch. On August 29, 2024, Uber announced a strategic investment in UK autonomous-driving company Wayve as an extension of Wayve’s Series C funding round. The investment amount was not disclosed.

The agreement combined Wayve’s autonomous-driving software with Uber’s global mobility platform and relationships with vehicle manufacturers. The stated long-term objective was to bring Wayve-powered vehicles to Uber’s network in multiple markets, covering development paths from advanced driver assistance to Level 4 autonomous vehicles.
By August 12, 2026, the partnership had developed into a broader commercialization program. Wayve had announced a $1.2 billion Series D at an $8.6 billion post-money valuation, planned London robotaxi trials, a proposed late-2026 Tokyo pilot with Nissan, and further vehicle and robotaxi collaborations with Stellantis. Those plans remained dependent on vehicle integration, safety validation, regulation, operating partners and customer acceptance.

What Uber invested in
Wayve describes its technology as embodied AI or end-to-end AI for autonomous driving. Rather than building a separate, heavily engineered system for every city, its AI Driver is intended to interpret the road environment and control the vehicle using onboard computing and sensors.
Wayve’s stated approach is:
- Mapless: designed to operate without depending on high-definition maps created for individual cities.
- Hardware-agnostic: intended to work across different vehicle platforms and sensor configurations.
- Data-driven: trained to learn from diverse real-world driving situations.
- Licensable: Wayve says it intends to provide its AI Driver to automakers and fleet operators instead of owning every vehicle and running every robotaxi service itself.
That strategy matters to Uber because a system that can be adapted across vehicle brands and geographies could, in principle, be easier to deploy than a city-by-city autonomous fleet. It is a strategic premise, not proof that the software can safely operate everywhere or that a commercial deployment is complete.
Wayve said in its 2026 materials that its system had achieved “zero-shot” driving in more than 500 cities across Europe, North America and Japan during the preceding year. That is a Wayve-reported claim, not an independently audited industry benchmark, so it should be understood as the company’s description of its testing and generalization performance.

Uber contributes more than funding. Its strategic value is the combination of:
- Capital: investment in Wayve’s development and later milestone-based funding tied to global robotaxi deployments.
- A large customer marketplace: Uber said it had more than 150 million monthly global users in the 2024 announcement.
- Operating infrastructure: a platform for matching riders with vehicles, managing trips and handling customer-facing service operations.
- Market access: an established network that could help introduce autonomous vehicles in several countries, subject to local rules and operating arrangements.
Uber has generally pursued partnerships with autonomous-vehicle developers and automakers rather than relying only on an internally developed self-driving system. The Wayve deal fits that strategy: Wayve supplies the driving technology, participating automakers supply and integrate production vehicles, and Uber supplies the mobility marketplace and fleet-operation role.

What the 2024 announcement did—and did not—promise
| Question | Status in the 2024 announcement |
|---|---|
| How much did Uber invest? | Not disclosed. |
| Did Uber buy Wayve? | No. The announcement described a strategic investment and partnership, not an acquisition. |
| Where would the first service launch? | No first city was named. |
| When would vehicles enter Uber’s network? | No launch date was announced. |
| How many vehicles were planned? | No vehicle number was announced. |
| Would the first vehicles be fully driverless? | The announcement did not establish that. It described a development and commercialization vision across several automation levels. |
Consequently, describing the 2024 deal as an immediate robotaxi rollout would overstate the evidence. It was a financing and strategic-development agreement intended to create a path toward future deployments.
The automation levels in the roadmap
The partnership referenced several stages of driving automation. These labels are important because “self-driving” can describe very different capabilities.
- Level 2+ advanced driver assistance: the vehicle can assist with steering, speed and other driving tasks, but the human driver remains responsible for supervising the system and must be ready to intervene. “Level 2+” is an industry shorthand rather than a formal standalone SAE level.
- Level 3 automated driving: the system can perform the driving task in defined conditions, with the human expected to respond when the system issues a takeover request. The exact operational design domain and regulatory treatment matter.
- Level 4 autonomous driving: the vehicle can perform the driving task without human control within a defined operational design domain. Level 4 does not mean the vehicle can drive anywhere, in every weather condition or on every road.
The roadmap therefore spans two related but distinct products: driver-assistance features for privately owned vehicles and automated vehicles operated as part of a ride-hailing fleet. A Level 2++ consumer feature is not the same thing as a driverless Level 4 robotaxi.
What changed in 2026
Wayve’s Series D financing
On February 25, 2026, Wayve announced that it had closed a $1.2 billion Series D round at an $8.6 billion post-money valuation. Wayve said its broader financing secured $1.5 billion in total capital and included Microsoft, NVIDIA, Uber, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Stellantis. The company also said Uber had committed additional milestone-based capital to support global robotaxi deployments.
The distinction between the original and later announcements is important: Uber’s 2024 investment amount was undisclosed, while Wayve’s 2026 financing announcement supplied details about a later and broader capital package. The later numbers should not be retroactively presented as the size of Uber’s 2024 investment.

Planned London robotaxi service
Wayve’s updated roadmap said commercial robotaxi trials would begin in 2026, with the first Uber service planned for London and international expansion intended to reach more than 10 markets.
Under the announced model, Uber would own and operate the fleet while Wayve would deploy its AI Driver in Level 4-capable vehicles supplied by participating automakers. These are planned trials and deployment targets—not evidence that an unrestricted, fully driverless global service was already operating on August 12, 2026.
Proposed Nissan pilot in Tokyo
On March 11, 2026, Uber, Wayve and Nissan announced a memorandum of understanding for a proposed late-2026 robotaxi pilot in Tokyo. The planned vehicle was a Nissan LEAF equipped with the Wayve AI Driver and offered through Uber.
The initial phase was expected to include a trained safety operator in the vehicle. Uber also said it intended to launch through a licensed taxi partner in Japan and was still selecting partners. The pilot was therefore subject to discussions with relevant authorities and partner arrangements; it was not a promise of immediate, unrestricted driverless service throughout Tokyo.
Stellantis and consumer-vehicle assistance
On May 21, 2026, Stellantis and Wayve announced a strategic technology partnership to integrate the Wayve AI Driver into Stellantis’ STLA AutoDrive platform. The initial target was hands-free, door-to-door supervised Level 2++ driving across urban and highway environments, with the first North American vehicle integration planned for 2028.

This is a consumer-vehicle assistance pathway, separate from the Uber robotaxi program. A driver using a supervised Level 2++ feature must continue to monitor the road and remain responsible for the drive; the system should not be described as a driverless taxi simply because it shares technology with a higher-automation roadmap.
Global robotaxi collaboration
In June 2026, Stellantis, Wayve and Uber announced another collaboration aimed at scaling robotaxis globally. The announcement established a partnership and deployment framework, not proof that a particular fleet had already achieved unrestricted driverless operation. Stellantis’ accompanying materials included forward-looking-statement warnings, reinforcing that the anticipated deployments and outcomes were not guaranteed results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the partnership could matter
Autonomous mobility requires more than a capable driving model. It needs a production vehicle, sensors and onboard computing, safety validation, regulatory approval, maintenance, charging or refuelling, remote-support procedures, insurance, customer support and a way to attract riders.
The Wayve-Uber structure connects three parts of that stack:
- Wayve: autonomous-driving software and its AI training and deployment approach.
- Automakers: production vehicles, vehicle-system integration and manufacturing scale.
- Uber: rider demand, dispatch and marketplace infrastructure, plus fleet-operation capabilities.
In theory, this could reduce the need to create an entirely separate robotaxi company for every city. A shared software and vehicle-partner model may also make expansion across markets more practical. In practice, scaling remains difficult because each market can impose different rules, road conditions, insurance requirements, safety expectations and operating constraints. Those dependencies are analytical implications of the partnership structure and the companies’ plans, not guarantees of successful deployment.

Wayve’s model versus a vertically integrated robotaxi company
| Approach | Who supplies the main pieces? | Potential advantage | Key challenge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wayve-style licensing model | Wayve supplies AI; automakers supply vehicles; fleet operators such as Uber run the service. | Could spread development and deployment costs across partners and vehicle programs. | More integration points and more dependence on partners, regulators and operating readiness. |
| Vertically integrated robotaxi model | One company controls more of the software, vehicle and service operation. | Tighter control over the hardware-software-service stack. | More capital-intensive and potentially slower to adapt across brands and markets. |
Neither model removes the central safety and regulatory problem. The system still has to perform reliably within a clearly defined operating domain, and the service must be able to manage situations that the automated system cannot handle.
What to watch next
- Whether the planned London trials begin on schedule and what level of human supervision they use.
- Whether the proposed Tokyo pilot receives the necessary approvals and secures a licensed taxi partner.
- Which automakers supply the Level 4-capable vehicles for Uber’s planned fleet.
- Whether Wayve’s AI Driver is deployed in defined geographies and conditions or expands to broader operating domains.
- How safety performance, incident reporting, disengagement data and customer acceptance are communicated.
- Whether the 2028 North American STLA AutoDrive integration remains on schedule.
- How the companies divide responsibility for vehicle ownership, maintenance, insurance, remote assistance and passenger support.
These practical details will show whether the partnership is moving from a promising technology-and-capital arrangement to a repeatable commercial operating model.
