Waymo’s $45 Billion Valuation: What Its 2024 Funding Round Meant—and What Changed Since

Waymo’s $45 billion valuation was a 2024 milestone, not its current value. The autonomous-driving company later raised $16 billion at a $126 billion post-money valuation in February 2026.

Waymo’s approximately $45 billion valuation is historical, not current. The figure came from the Alphabet-backed autonomous-vehicle company’s $5.6 billion Series C financing announced in October 2024. Waymo’s latest announced funding round, disclosed on February 2, 2026, raised $16 billion at a $126 billion post-money valuation.

The 2024 financing was important because it showed investors were valuing Waymo as an emerging commercial transportation business—not merely as a self-driving research project. But the valuation reflected expectations of future scale, and did not prove that Waymo was profitable.

What happened in Waymo’s 2024 funding round?

Waymo announced a $5.6 billion financing round in October 2024. Reporting identified it as a Series C round and placed Waymo’s post-money valuation at approximately $45 billion. Waymo confirmed the financing and its participants, but the company’s initial announcement did not itself state the $45 billion valuation; that figure came from contemporary reporting by TechCrunch.

Alphabet, Waymo’s parent company, led the round. Other named participants included Andreessen Horowitz, Fidelity, Perry Creek, Silver Lake, Tiger Global, and T. Rowe Price. Waymo described the financing as oversubscribed.

The company said it would use the money to expand Waymo One, its commercial autonomous ride-hailing service, and continue developing the Waymo Driver. At the time, Waymo was serving riders in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, while expanding partnerships and operations involving Austin and Atlanta.

Waymo’s announcement is available on its official blog.

Why did investors assign Waymo a $45 billion valuation?

The financing valued Waymo’s potential to build a large autonomous transportation business. Several factors supported that view:

  • Commercial rides: Waymo was already providing paid autonomous rides rather than limiting its technology to prototypes or closed testing.
  • Operational experience: Running a robotaxi service requires more than an autonomous-driving system. It also requires mapping, fleet management, maintenance, charging, customer support, remote assistance, insurance, and regulatory work.
  • Geographic expansion: Each additional city could increase ride volume and spread the cost of developing Waymo’s technology and operating infrastructure across a larger network.
  • Strategic value to Alphabet: Alphabet provides capital and long-term support for a capital-intensive business whose returns may take years to develop.
  • Additional business possibilities: Waymo could eventually pursue technology licensing, automaker partnerships, personally owned vehicles, logistics, or delivery applications. These are strategic possibilities, not disclosed revenue streams that should be treated as established today.

Waymo’s potential use in personally owned vehicles became more concrete in 2025, when Waymo and Toyota said they were exploring a strategic partnership involving autonomous technology. The companies did not present that announcement as an immediate mass-market product. Their plans are described in Waymo’s announcement.

What a $45 billion post-money valuation means

A financing amount and a valuation are different numbers:

Term Meaning
Capital raised The money investors put into the company—in this case, $5.6 billion.
Post-money valuation The implied value of the company after the new investment—in this case, approximately $45 billion.

The $45 billion figure was a private-market financing valuation. It was not a publicly traded share price, a cash balance, annual revenue figure, or profit measure. Waymo is an Alphabet subsidiary rather than a separately listed public company, so investors cannot buy a Waymo stock ticker or use daily market trading to verify that valuation.

Alphabet reports Waymo within its broader Other Bets segment. That segment includes multiple businesses, and Alphabet does not publish a complete standalone Waymo income statement. Alphabet’s investor materials explain that Other Bets revenue is generated primarily by autonomous transportation services through Waymo, but they do not provide every financial detail an analyst would have for a separately listed company. What had Waymo achieved by October 2024?

Waymo had moved beyond the technology-demonstration stage. Its Waymo One service offered fully autonomous rides without a human driver behind the wheel in approved operating areas. That does not mean the company could operate everywhere: autonomous ride-hailing depends on local mapping, regulatory permissions, fleet operations, and market-specific infrastructure.

The business also had an accumulated real-world operating dataset and experience managing the practical problems of a commercial fleet. Those capabilities can be difficult for a new competitor to reproduce quickly, although they do not eliminate the cost or risk of expansion.

Waymo’s valuation therefore represented a combination of current operations and expectations that the company could scale them. Paid rides were evidence of customer demand, but ride volume alone did not establish profitability.

What operating progress supported the later valuation?

In its February 2026 financing announcement, Waymo reported that it had:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • More than tripled annual ride volume in 2025 to 15 million rides.
  • Surpassed 20 million lifetime rides.
  • Reached more than 400,000 rides per week across six major U.S. metropolitan areas.
  • Logged 127 million miles of fully autonomous operation.

Waymo also reported a 90% reduction in serious-injury crashes compared with its human-driver comparison baseline. That is a company-reported safety result, not an unconditional claim that Waymo is 90% safer in every situation. The meaning of the comparison depends on the baseline, geographic coverage, mileage exposure, and definition of a serious-injury crash.

Waymo’s reported growth and operating data are detailed in its 2026 financing announcement and its 2025 year-in-review.

Waymo’s latest financing moved the valuation to $126 billion

Waymo’s $45 billion valuation was superseded by a much larger financing announced on February 2, 2026.

Date Round Amount raised Post-money valuation
October 2024 Series C $5.6 billion Approximately $45 billion
February 2, 2026 Latest announced investment round $16 billion $126 billion

Alphabet remained the majority investor in the 2026 round. Outside participation included Dragoneer Investment Group, DST Global, Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Mubadala Capital, Bessemer Venture Partners, Silver Lake, Tiger Global, T. Rowe Price, Fidelity, CapitalG, GV, Kleiner Perkins, and Temasek, among others.

Waymo said the new funding would accelerate expansion, including plans to begin operations in more than 20 additional cities during 2026, with Tokyo and London among the cities named. Those were expansion plans, not guarantees that every launch would occur on schedule.

Alphabet’s 2025 fourth-quarter earnings-call materials said the valuation increase associated with the new investment round resulted in a $2.1 billion stock-based compensation charge. Alphabet also funded a significant portion of the round. The accounting impact is discussed in the company’s earnings-call materials.

Does the valuation prove Waymo is profitable?

No. A private financing valuation reflects what investors agreed to pay for an ownership stake based on expected future value. It does not demonstrate that Waymo has reached profitability or that current ride revenue alone supports the valuation.

Autonomous ride-hailing has substantial operating costs, including vehicles, sensors, maintenance, charging, insurance, remote operations, customer support, mapping, and regulatory compliance. Waymo must also build market-specific operations as it enters new cities.

The investment case depends on whether ride volume, revenue, and operating efficiency can grow faster than those costs. It may also depend on additional business models, such as partnerships with automakers or licensing the Waymo Driver. Those opportunities could expand the addressable business, but they remain future-oriented unless Waymo reports them as deployed products and recurring revenue.

Key risks behind the $126 billion valuation

  • Scaling economics: More rides do not automatically mean attractive margins if fleet and support costs remain high.
  • Regulatory friction: Deployment is city by city and may require approvals, mapping, local operations, and public acceptance.
  • Safety and trust: A serious incident could delay launches, increase scrutiny, or reduce customer confidence.
  • Competition: Rival autonomous-vehicle companies or conventional ride-hailing providers could deploy more cheaply or at greater scale.
  • Execution risk: Announced city expansions can be postponed or changed.
  • Limited liquidity: Because Waymo is private, outside investors do not have the same immediate trading liquidity available in a public company.
  • Disclosure limits: Alphabet’s Other Bets reporting does not provide a complete standalone Waymo profit-and-loss statement.

Waymo’s public operating footprint can also change quickly. In a July 2026 update, the company described fully autonomous operations being prepared in Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa, initially for employees, with public rides expected later. Employee access, testing, and public commercial service should not be treated as interchangeable stages. See Waymo’s city-expansion update.

Can consumers use Waymo?

Waymo One is available only in selected service areas, and availability changes as markets move from testing or employee access to public service. Eligible riders can check the official Waymo One page and use the Waymo app to request a ride.

There is no universal Waymo fare or subscription price. Pricing depends on the market, route, and time and should be checked in the app when booking. Conventional services such as Uber and Lyft remain more broadly available in areas where Waymo has not launched. Waymo’s distinguishing feature is autonomous operation in approved service areas, while conventional ride-hailing uses human drivers.

What readers should take away

Waymo’s approximately $45 billion valuation was a meaningful milestone in its October 2024 $5.6 billion Series C financing. It signaled investor confidence that autonomous ride-hailing could become a scalable commercial business and that Waymo’s operating experience had strategic value.

But it is not Waymo’s current valuation. As of August 18, 2026, the latest announced financing was the February 2026 $16 billion round at a $126 billion post-money valuation. That repricing reflected reported growth in rides and autonomous miles, Alphabet’s continued backing, and expectations that Waymo can expand into a much larger transportation and vehicle-technology business. It still does not establish standalone profitability or guarantee that every planned market will launch successfully.
