Waymo says it is preparing fully autonomous operations in all four, beginning with employee rider-only service before opening to the public. Portland and Washington, D.C. are further back, while London is the company’s most advanced international expansion and Tokyo remains a testing and partnership program rather than a public robotaxi launch.
This is a status snapshot based on Waymo announcements and market information available through August 6, 2026. “Heading next” does not always mean a service is available to the public: Waymo’s rollout typically moves from mapping and local testing to specialist-supervised rides, employee access, invitation-only public service, and finally broader availability.

The short version: Waymo’s next wave is four U.S. cities
Waymo’s July 8, 2026 expansion update identified Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa as the next operational wave. The company said it was preparing to begin fully autonomous operations in each city without a human specialist behind the wheel.

Waymo described an initial phase in which employees would be the riders. Public access was expected later, after the company validated local driving conditions, operations, support systems, and regulatory requirements.

The distinction matters. A Waymo vehicle being tested on local streets, a new maintenance facility, or an employee ride program is evidence of expansion—but it is not the same as being able to summon a car through the Waymo app as a regular customer.
| Market | Latest status | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Denver | Next operational wave | Waymo has described fully autonomous preparation, starting with employee riders. Broad public access was still pending in the latest announcement. |
| Las Vegas | Next operational wave | Waymo’s July update pointed to employee rider-only operations before a wider opening. A prior commitment targeted autonomous ride-hailing in summer 2026, including the Strip. |
| San Diego | Next operational wave | Waymo has announced preparation for fully autonomous operations, with public access to follow the employee phase. |
| Tampa | Next operational wave | Waymo has announced preparation for fully autonomous operations, but the latest cited update did not establish open public availability. |
| Portland | Groundwork and local familiarization | Waymo is working with officials and community partners on a regulatory path and has begun manual driving to learn the city’s streetscape. |
| Washington, D.C. | Infrastructure and approval stage | Waymo is building local operating capacity, but the rollout remained dependent on a D.C. Council bill. |
| London | International testing and preparation | Closed-course testing is complete and local road testing has advanced, but London was not yet a public robotaxi market. |
| Tokyo | Partner-led testing preparation | Waymo, GO, and Nihon Kotsu are developing the local operating ecosystem. No public-service date has been announced. |
Waymo’s current operating footprint
Waymo’s current FAQ lists nine operating markets:
- Dallas
- Houston
- Los Angeles
- Miami
- Nashville
- Orlando
- Phoenix
- San Antonio
- The San Francisco Bay Area
Waymo also says its service is available through an Uber partnership in Austin and Atlanta. Counting those partner-distributed markets produces an 11-market public network, but that is not the same as saying Waymo operates every market through its own app. Waymo and its corporate pages sometimes use different counting conventions, such as “over 10 cities.”

Waymo’s 2026 activity illustrates the difference between a market announcement and a fully open service:
- Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando: Waymo introduced these markets through a limited-rider rollout on February 24, with invitations issued on a rolling basis before broader access later in the year.
- Miami and Orlando: Both moved to open public availability on April 15 after more than 150,000 people joined the initial interest list. Orlando therefore appears in both stages: it began with limited riders and later opened to everyone.
- Nashville: An invitation-based ramp began in April, and the market opened to anyone using the Waymo app on June 25. Waymo was also testing at Nashville International Airport, but airport rides were not described as generally available.
This sequence is why a city-by-city status label is more useful than a single list of “Waymo cities.” The same market can move through several access stages over a period of months.
Why Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa are important
Waymo is using the four-city wave to test whether its Driver can handle a broader range of operating environments without relying on one familiar urban pattern.
Waymo’s February expansion announcement described the new markets as a mix of different road layouts, traffic conditions, and weather challenges. The company specifically highlighted intense sun, sudden downpours, and freezing temperatures among the conditions its expanded network must handle. Those are not interchangeable problems: glare affects perception, heavy rain changes visibility and road-surface behavior, and freezing conditions can alter traction and obscure lane markings.
Las Vegas also has a particularly visible commercial opportunity. In November 2025, Waymo said it planned to return to Las Vegas with autonomous ride-hailing in summer 2026 for residents and visitors, including service to the Strip. The company was working toward eventual airport service as well. The July 2026 update indicates that the city is progressing through employee rider-only operations before a wider opening, but it does not by itself confirm that every visitor can already book a Waymo ride or that Harry Reid International Airport service is live.
For travelers, the practical question is therefore not simply whether Waymo has “arrived” in Las Vegas. It is whether the current service zone covers the hotel, attraction, neighborhood, or airport terminal they need—and whether public and airport access have opened.
Portland is a credible future market, not a confirmed launch
Portland belongs in the expansion story, but in a different category from the four-city July wave.

Waymo has announced that it is coming to Portland and is working with state and city officials and community partners to create a regulatory path. In a later update, the company said it would begin manual driving to familiarize its system with Portland’s streetscapes, including its bridges and rain-slick roads.
That is meaningful preparation. It gives Waymo local data and operational knowledge before autonomous service begins. But the available evidence supports “mapping and regulatory groundwork”, not a confirmed date for public autonomous rides. A vehicle conducting manual familiarization drives should not be treated as proof that Portland customers can summon a robotaxi.
Washington, D.C. is building capacity before approval
Washington, D.C. is also materially advanced, but it is not launch-ready based on the latest information.
As of August 6, Waymo had leased a third local site and was developing a 32,000-square-foot facility intended for tires and repairs. That type of facility is a sign that Waymo is investing in a durable local operation rather than conducting a short demonstration.

However, reporting from Axios indicated that the rollout remained pending a D.C. Council bill. The appropriate description is therefore infrastructure and government approval ahead of service. The facility does not establish that public rides have begun, nor does it remove the need for local authorization.
London is Waymo’s most advanced international expansion
London is further along than Tokyo in Waymo’s international pipeline.
In April 2026, Waymo said it had completed closed-course testing and that trained local professionals had driven Waymo vehicles tens of thousands of miles on London roads. The company described this as the next step toward fully autonomous ride-hailing in London during 2026.
Waymo is also building a local team, developing relationships with emergency services, and planning multiple autonomous-vehicle service centers. Its UK information says extensive trials will cover selected London boroughs for mapping and safety validation.
Those preparations are substantial, but London should not be described as a live public robotaxi service on this evidence. The company has an objective for fully autonomous ride-hailing during 2026; it still must complete local validation, establish operating procedures, and satisfy the applicable regulatory requirements before ordinary customers can use the service at scale.
Tokyo is a testing partnership, not a public launch
Tokyo is earlier in the commercial sequence.
Waymo’s Japanese program is being developed with GO and Nihon Kotsu. The partners are working on a depot, operational training, public outreach, and preparations for testing. Waymo has described Tokyo as its first international city for testing.
That language is important: testing is not a launch announcement. The partnership could eventually provide the local fleet, dispatch, operating knowledge, and distribution relationships needed for a broader Japanese rollout, but the available information does not establish a public robotaxi service date in Tokyo or anywhere else in Japan.
Waymo’s expansion follows a repeatable sequence
The company’s market-entry pattern is becoming clearer. A typical market can pass through these stages:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Manual mapping and familiarization: Waymo drives local roads to understand lane geometry, intersections, bridges, road markings, weather effects, construction patterns, and other city-specific details.
- Specialist-supervised testing: A trained human specialist remains in the vehicle while Waymo evaluates the system and local operating procedures.
- Employee rider-only operations: Waymo removes the specialist from the normal ride experience but limits riders to employees while it gathers operational evidence.
- Invitation-based public service: A limited group of customers can request rides, allowing Waymo to increase demand gradually and identify unusual edge cases.
- Open public access: The service becomes available to anyone who meets the market’s booking and coverage requirements.
- Service-area expansion and distribution partnerships: Waymo adds more neighborhoods, airports, vehicles, or channels such as Uber partnerships.
Nashville demonstrates the move from invitations to open access. London shows the mapping, local testing, and emergency-services preparation stage. Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa illustrate the employee rider-only stage. Using this sequence prevents several common errors, including treating a regulatory filing as a launch or treating a test vehicle as a customer service.
New vehicles are part of the expansion strategy
Waymo is not expanding only by sending the same vehicle and software combination into more cities. It is also developing additional vehicle platforms to improve flexibility and eventually increase capacity.
The company began autonomous testing of Hyundai IONIQ 5 vehicles with a specialist present. It also identified the Ojai vehicle as the first platform for the sixth-generation Waymo Driver. Waymo said Ojai would help it serve cities with snowier conditions and support expansion into additional markets, including Denver, Las Vegas, and San Diego.
Different vehicle platforms can affect the economics and practicality of expansion. A platform must provide the sensors, computing, redundancy, maintenance access, passenger space, and fleet-support characteristics required for autonomous operation. The vehicle itself is only one part of the problem: each new city also needs service centers, charging or fueling arrangements, trained operations staff, remote assistance processes, cleaning, repairs, and local emergency-response coordination.

Why Waymo believes it can scale faster now
Waymo reported several milestones that help explain its more ambitious expansion plans:
- 15 million rides in 2025
- More than 20 million lifetime rides by February 2026
- More than 400,000 rides per week across six major U.S. metropolitan areas in February 2026
- A target of more than 1 million rides per week by the end of 2026
These are Waymo-reported figures and targets, not independently audited results presented in the research. They show the scale the company is pursuing, but they do not guarantee that every planned market will open on schedule.
Waymo also announced a $16 billion investment round in February 2026. The company said the funding would accelerate expansion into more than 20 additional cities, including Tokyo and London.

The phrase “more than 20 additional cities” should be read as a company expansion objective and groundwork plan—not as a guaranteed list of 20-plus completed public launches in 2026. City approvals, fleet availability, infrastructure, local operating partners, safety validation, and service-area economics can all change the timetable. Waymo has not published a complete, authoritative list of every city included in that objective in the sources reviewed.
Safety validation remains the gate before wider access
Waymo’s latest corporate safety analysis covered more than 220 million fully autonomous miles through the end of March 2026. Compared with human-driver benchmarks in the same operating areas and period, Waymo reported:
- 94% fewer crashes causing serious or fatal injuries
- 82% fewer crashes involving airbag deployment
- 82% fewer crashes involving any reported injury
These figures should be understood in context. They are Waymo’s comparative analyses, using specified human-driver benchmarks and operating areas. They are not a promise that every future city will produce identical results, and they do not eliminate the need for local testing. A new city can introduce different weather, road design, traffic behavior, construction practices, emergency procedures, and legal requirements.
That is why Waymo’s staged rollout is operationally significant. Each step gives the company a chance to test not only the autonomous driving system, but also the less visible parts of the service: dispatch, rider support, vehicle recovery, roadside interactions, first responders, maintenance, and responses to unusual road conditions.
What the “20-plus cities” plan does—and does not—tell us
The plan indicates that Waymo is moving from isolated demonstrations toward a repeatable deployment model. Its goal is to reuse a validated Driver, vehicle platforms, operating tools, and local-partner playbooks across a larger network.
It does not provide a definitive launch calendar. The strongest evidence currently points to:
- Immediate operational wave: Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa.
- Confirmed groundwork: Portland.
- Infrastructure before approval: Washington, D.C.
- International launch pipeline: London and Tokyo, with London considerably further along.
- Longer-range candidates: Other cities covered by the 20-plus-city objective, whose identities and dates have not been fully published in the reviewed sources.
Media reports, vehicle sightings, job listings, property leases, and regulatory documents can all be useful clues. None should automatically be promoted to a confirmed launch without a city-specific Waymo announcement or clear evidence of public availability.
How to tell whether Waymo is actually available in a city
Before relying on a robotaxi for a trip, check four separate questions:
- Is the city listed as an operating market? A market may appear on Waymo’s list while still having a limited service boundary.
- Which booking channel is available? Austin and Atlanta are distributed through Uber, while other markets may be accessed through the Waymo app. Do not assume that every market uses the same app.
- Is access public or restricted? Employee-only, invitation-only, and open public service are different stages.
- Does the exact pickup and destination area qualify? Airport access, stadiums, hotels, and outlying neighborhoods may be excluded even when the surrounding city is active.
Waymo’s coverage can change quickly as service areas expand or rules are updated. The app’s live availability is more useful for a specific trip than a national list of announced markets.

The next meaningful announcements will likely be city-specific access changes rather than another broad list. For Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa, the key milestone is the transition from employee rider-only operations to public access. For Portland, it is regulatory progress and the move from manual familiarization to autonomous testing. For Washington, D.C., it is passage of the required local measure. For London and Tokyo, it is the move from preparation and testing toward an authorized public service.
Airports will be another important milestone. Waymo is testing at Nashville International Airport and has discussed eventual airport service in Las Vegas, but neither fact should be interpreted as universal airport availability. Airport operating agreements, designated pickup zones, traffic rules, and local approvals can make airport service a separate phase from ordinary city rides.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which cities is Waymo heading to next?
The clearest next U.S. markets are Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa. Waymo has described fully autonomous preparation in all four, beginning with employee rider-only operations before broader public access. Portland and Washington, D.C. are also being developed, but they are at earlier stages.
Is Waymo open to the public in Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, or Tampa?
The latest announcement covered by this article described an initial employee rider-only phase and expected public access later. It did not establish that all four markets were already open to everyone. Check current availability in the Waymo app or the company’s current rides information.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is Waymo launching in London and Tokyo?
London is the more advanced international program, with closed-course testing completed and extensive local road testing and preparation underway. Tokyo is a partner-led testing and operational-development program with GO and Nihon Kotsu. Neither should be described as a generally available public robotaxi service based on the information covered here.
How many Waymo markets are operating now?
Waymo’s FAQ lists nine operating markets, and Austin and Atlanta are available through an Uber partnership. That creates an 11-market public network when partner-distributed cities are included, although Waymo uses different counting conventions and not every market is booked through the Waymo app.
The Bottom Line
Waymo’s expansion is real, but it is staged rather than instantaneous. Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and Tampa are the best-supported answers to where it is heading next. Portland and Washington, D.C. are still in groundwork and approval phases; London is preparing for a 2026 autonomous-service objective; and Tokyo is still a testing partnership. Treat the company’s 20-plus-city figure as an ambitious expansion objective, not a guaranteed list of public launches, and verify the exact service area and booking channel before traveling.
