A Tesla Cybertruck was caught on video stuck in snow during Montreal’s record-setting February 2025 storm. The clip is real context for winter preparation—but not a definitive test of the truck.
A viral video shows a Tesla Cybertruck unable to free itself from deep snow during Montreal’s exceptional mid-February 2025 storm. It is a striking winter-driving clip, but it is not a controlled test of the Cybertruck—or proof that every Cybertruck performs poorly in snow.
The original video is attributed to TikTok account @tareq2022khan, with the caption “Snow in Montreal 16.02.2025.” Contemporary reporting identified Montreal-area clues in the footage, including Jean Coutu and Hanna’s Hut signs, so Montreal is the best-supported location rather than an absolute geolocation claim.
Why this was an unusually difficult day to get unstuck
The timing matters. Montreal was hit by an extraordinary snow event: CityNews reported, citing an Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist, about 73 cm by Sunday and roughly 75 cm over five days. It was described as Montreal’s greatest four-day snowfall total since 1941.

That kind of storm creates far more than a thin layer of loose powder. Plows, traffic and temperature changes can leave uneven ruts, packed snow, slush, snowbanks and polished icy patches. A vehicle can lose momentum, sink onto packed snow, or have too little tire bite to climb out even if it has capable hardware on paper.
What the video does—and does not—show
The clip fairly supports one conclusion: this particular Cybertruck was stuck or struggling to escape snow in severe urban winter conditions. It does not reveal enough to diagnose why.
| Reasonable takeaway | What remains unknown |
|---|---|
| One Cybertruck could not immediately drive itself free during a historic snowstorm. | The truck’s exact variant, wheel/tire package, tread depth and tire model. |
| Snow traction was inadequate in that moment. | Whether it had winter, all-season or other tires; its tire pressures; and whether its tires were worn. |
| Road and snow conditions were severe. | The depth and density of snow at the contact patches, whether the vehicle was high-centered, and the condition beneath the snow. |
| The driver was attempting to move the truck. | The selected drive/traction settings, driver inputs, vehicle load, recovery method and eventual outcome. |
It would therefore be inaccurate to say the Cybertruck lacks four-wheel drive, that the truck was illegally equipped, that it was stuck in a known shallow depth of snow, or that another passing vehicle proves a meaningful head-to-head advantage. None of those details is established by the footage.

Tires are the practical lesson
Tesla’s own winter guidance says winter tires are recommended in cold, snowy or icy conditions and that all-season and summer tires do not provide adequate traction in those conditions. Tesla also cautions that tires with less than 5/32 inch (4 mm) of tread do not perform well in snow and slush.

That guidance is more useful than trying to turn one viral clip into a brand verdict. Tire compound, tread pattern and remaining tread can change braking, steering and acceleration substantially on cold snow and ice. Four-wheel drive can help a vehicle get moving; it cannot create grip that the tires cannot provide, and it does not shorten stopping distances by itself.
Québec requires winter-ready tires for Québec-registered vehicles from December 1 through March 15, subject to exceptions. The video does not establish whether this Cybertruck was Québec-registered, what tires it wore, or whether it met that requirement.

Why a locking differential is not a magic escape button
Tesla’s Cybertruck manual discusses locking differentials and includes getting unstuck from a snowbank among the situations where a rear-locking differential may be used temporarily. The same guidance warns that a locking differential cannot be expected to provide enough traction when the tires are inappropriate or when all four wheels spin.
In plain terms, traction settings can help distribute available torque, but they cannot replace tire grip or solve every high-centering and snow-packing problem. The video offers no basis to say whether the driver used, missed or misused any setting.

What Cybertruck owners can do before the next storm
- Fit true winter tires before winter weather arrives. Confirm the exact wheel and tire size on the vehicle, use a compatible winter-rated tire, and check tread depth before relying on it in snow.
- Carry traction aids for deep or unplowed conditions. Tesla’s off-road guidance says traction boards can improve traction at individual wheels. Boards can be helpful after the area around the tires has been cleared enough for a safe placement.
- Preserve momentum carefully. Tesla notes that momentum matters in snow because stopping can allow the vehicle to sink. That does not mean driving faster into an unknown drift; it means avoiding unnecessary stops where conditions and visibility safely allow.
- Avoid spinning the tires. Wheelspin can polish snow or dig the vehicle deeper. Stop, assess whether the vehicle is high-centered, clear packed snow where safe, and use an appropriate recovery plan rather than repeatedly flooring the accelerator.
- Know the recovery points and limits before you need them. Consult the current owner documentation for the vehicle-specific procedure. Do not attach a strap, rope or winch line to an unapproved point, and keep bystanders clear of recovery equipment.
Accessories worth considering
For Cybertrucks fitted with 18- or 20-inch tires, Tesla specifically recommends König XD-16 Pro size 285 tire chains. Tesla instructs owners to install chains on the rear tires only, keep speed at or below 30 mph (48 km/h), and remove them when conditions permit. Confirm the tire size, the current chain instructions, seller authenticity and local chain rules before buying or fitting a set.
Tesla Canada has also listed a 20-inch Core Wheel and Winter Tire Package for Cybertruck. The package specification includes four 285/65R20 Pirelli Scorpion Winter 2 tires, wheels, BLE sensors and nuts, and wheel covers; Tesla says it fits all Cybertrucks. Availability can change, so an out-of-stock listing should not be treated as a currently purchasable option.
Heavy-duty recovery traction boards are another sensible category for drivers who routinely encounter unplowed snow, provided they are used according to the board maker’s instructions and only when the scene is safe.

The fair verdict
Watch the video as a reminder that severe winter weather can defeat a single vehicle in a specific moment—not as a final ruling on an entire model. The strongest conclusion comes from Tesla’s own guidance: winter tires and adequate tread are foundational, while drivetrain features and recovery aids are supporting tools when conditions turn bad.

Does the video prove the Tesla Cybertruck cannot drive in snow?
No. It shows one Cybertruck unable to free itself during severe Montreal snow conditions. The footage does not establish the tire type, tread, settings, snow conditions at the tires, vehicle configuration or the reason it became stuck.
Does the footage prove the Cybertruck was breaking Québec winter-tire rules?
No. Québec’s winter-tire rules apply to Québec-registered vehicles from December 1 through March 15, subject to exceptions. The video does not establish where this vehicle was registered or which tires it had.
