No U.S.-market 2023 Subaru WRX STI was announced. In March 2022, Subaru said it would not produce a next-generation internal-combustion WRX STI on the new WRX platform. The 2023 car in Subaru of America’s brochure is the WRX—not an STI—and claims that it would “decimate the competition” have no supported head-to-head test behind them.
What Subaru said about the next WRX STI
In a statement dated March 11, 2022, Subaru of America said: “In the meantime, a next generation internal combustion engine WRX STI will not be produced based upon the new WRX platform.” Subaru also said it was exploring possibilities for future STI models, including electrification. That left the door open to future STI-related products or vehicles, but it was not an announcement of a 2023 STI. Subaru of America’s March 2022 statement is the key distinction: no new combustion STI on that platform, and no promised replacement date.
What the 2023 U.S. WRX actually offered
Subaru’s U.S. 2023 brochure describes the WRX, a separate model from the STI. Its specifications are:
- Engine: 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER four-cylinder
- Output: 271 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque
- Transmission: six-speed manual or Subaru Performance Transmission
- Drivetrain: Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
These are WRX figures, not specifications for a 2023 WRX STI. The brochure is a model-year document for the U.S. market; it does not establish how the WRX ranks against competitors. See Subaru of America’s 2023 WRX brochure.

Why the STI name still appeared in other news
Japan-market WRX S4 STI Sport#
Subaru Tecnica International documented a limited WRX S4 STI Sport# edition for Japan, with production limited to 500 units. This was a separate regional special edition, not a U.S. 2023 WRX STI. STI Japan’s WRX S4 STI Sport# page identifies that specific vehicle and market.
STI-inspired parts in Australia
Subaru Australia has discussed STI-inspired parts in its regional context. That does not establish U.S. availability, fitment for every WRX, or the existence of a 2023 STI. Subaru Australia’s STI history article is about that market and its history.

The WRX STI rally car
Subaru Motorsports USA lists ARA national championships for its WRX STI Open 4WD car in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023. That is a competition car, not a showroom-spec 2023 STI: Subaru’s published vehicle description details specialized and modified rally hardware. Rally titles show the record of that race program; they do not demonstrate that a production STI existed or that it beat road-car rivals. Did Subaru’s 2023 WRX beat its competition?
The evidence here does not support that claim. Subaru’s statement rules out the proposed new-generation combustion STI on the WRX platform, and the 2023 brochure supplies specifications for the WRX only. Neither provides a matched test against named rivals. Without comparable pricing, specifications and results from the same market and model year—or a common-source instrumented test—there is no basis for saying a 2023 STI would outperform, let alone “decimate,” the competition.

How to verify which car a headline means
Subaru Japan’s owner-manual index lists WRX Type VB in its 2022-model-year cohort, while the STI Type VA entries end with a 2020 Type G listing. The index is Japanese and is useful as a corroborating model-year reference, not a complete record of worldwide production. Check Subaru Japan’s owner-manual index, then confirm market and model name: WRX, a regional STI-related edition, and a modified STI rally car are different things.
