The Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept was a one-off build for the 2024 SEMA Show, but Toyota’s official account does not say its donor was headed for the crusher. Toyota confirms the concept’s creation and show appearance; the claim that it was “saved” from destruction remains unverified in the sources available.
What is the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept?
Toyota unveiled the TRD Surf Concept on October 31, 2024, ahead of its appearance at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, held November 5–8. Toyota described it as a blend of the open-air character of the first-generation 4Runner and the design and technology of the then-new 2025 model. It was a Toyota Motorsports Garage show build, not a confirmed production trim or retail conversion. Toyota’s announcement details the build, and SEMA’s recap confirms its presence at the show.
Was it really saved from the crusher?
That part of the headline is not established by Toyota’s announcement or SEMA’s recap. Toyota does not say the donor was a pre-production vehicle, that it was scheduled to be destroyed, or what happened to the concept after the show.
A forum post repeats a Carbuzz headline claiming the concept used a pre-production 4Runner that otherwise would have been crushed. That is indirect secondary reporting, not independent confirmation of the donor’s status. On the available evidence, it is accurate to say the Surf Concept was built and displayed; it is not accurate to present its alleged crusher fate as confirmed.

What was the donor vehicle?
Toyota says the starting vehicle was a new 2025 4Runner TRD Limited. The following are Toyota’s stated specifications for that base vehicle, not proof that the custom concept was a retail trim or that every specification remained unchanged after modification.

The defining changes were substantial structural and functional work rather than a collection of bolt-on accessories.

Removable roof and two-door conversion
Toyota’s team engineered a removable roof and converted the four-door body to two doors while retaining functional windows. The roof was fabricated in-house after the team practiced the process on a fifth-generation 4Runner. Traditional fabrication, CAD and 3D printing helped develop matching cut lines, and Toyota says one person could remove the roof.
Wider stance and access changes
The body gained two inches of width on each side. To improve access to the rear seat after the door conversion, the team flipped the front passenger seat. Lead builder Marty Schwerter described the engineering challenges as “just tip of the iceberg issues.”

Suspension, tires and interior
The concept has long-travel suspension, billet-aluminum front upper and lower control arms, steering upgrades, custom front axles and a Toyota Tundra rear-end housing. It rides on 37-inch tires and custom 17-by-8.5-inch wheels. Inside, the flooring is soft and weatherproofed. A roof rack carries a custom surfboard “Travel Quiver” made specifically for this concept.
Why did Toyota build a surf-themed 4Runner?
Toyota connected the concept to the first-generation 4Runner’s popularity with Southern California beachgoers in the 1980s. Schwerter, Director of Operations at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center, said his inspiration came from driving a Toyota mini pickup on the Pacific Coast Highway and seeing the earlier model’s spirit in the 2025 4Runner.

The project also brought together Toyota teams including TRD North Carolina, TMNA Production Engineering, Service Parts and Accessory Development, AAP, and Motorsports and Engagement Marketing. Toyota described it as both an engineering showcase and a team effort.

Can you buy the Surf Concept or recreate it?
The sources establish the vehicle as a concept, not a production model, and do not identify a retail conversion kit for its removable roof or complete body transformation. Toyota says the roof was made in-house and the surfboard carrier was custom-made for this build, so the concept’s defining features should not be treated as available accessories.
Toyota separately listed a TRD forged billet upper-control-arm kit for 2003–2024 4Runner and 2007–2014 FJ Cruiser models. That is a distinct product, not a documented Surf Concept component, and those listed applications do not establish fitment for the 2025 donor. Toyota’s separate SEMA parts announcement provides that older-model context.
