Toyota’s Tacozilla was a custom Tacoma TRD Sport camper unveiled at the 2021 SEMA Show—not a production trim or a camper kit for sale. The one-off prototype paired a custom aluminum shell and cab pass-through with a compact living space designed for overland travel. Its details are useful inspiration, but Toyota cautioned that its non-genuine modifications could affect legality, warranty, safety and performance.
What was Toyota’s Tacozilla?
Tacozilla was a Toyota Motorsports Garage project built from a Tacoma TRD Sport pickup. Toyota described it as “100% custom”: the team removed the factory bed and built a camper structure around the truck. It was presented as a special prototype at SEMA in 2021, not as a production Tacoma model or an off-the-shelf conversion. Toyota’s unveiling announcement provides the company’s account of the build.
The styling drew on Toyota’s heritage campers, while the goal was to make a functioning camper that could still navigate trails. Team lead Marty Schwerter explained: “We really didn’t want it to look like a refrigerator on the back of a truck, so you’ll see it’s all rounded edges.”
How Toyota built the camper body
A custom frame and narrowed shell
Led by Schwerter, Toyota Motorsports Garage began by removing the bed and working out what needed to move to give someone room to stand inside. The team developed a custom camper frame and aluminum exterior, refining the upper and lower body to be narrower for clearance around trees and other trail obstacles. Toyota’s SEMA overview also describes the custom frame, aluminum body and pass-through.

- Fast, Easy Access: Full-opening gullwing doors give you quick reach from the rear and both sides - saving time when loading gear or grabbing essentials on the trail.
- Modular Storage Your Way: Configure it to your needs with exterior Molle panels, optional shelves, or a driver-side storage box for organized, ready-to-roll cargo space.
- Secure & Road-Ready: Lockable panels, heavy-duty latches, and an integrated third brake light boost confidence and visibility whether commuting or off-roading.
- Bright Interior Lighting: A built-in LED strip illuminates your truck bed for nighttime loading, campsite setups, or after-hours work when visibility matters.
- Built Tough: UV-resistant powder coat, stainless steel frame, and weather-tight rubber seals defend against harsh elements - rated for 750 lb static and 400 lb dynamic load.
The shape created a fabrication challenge at the angled rear opening: Toyota says its team spent well over 100 hours designing the rear door. That is a manufacturer-reported build figure, not an independently measured production standard.
Cab pass-through and systems
A connection between the truck cab and camper lets occupants move between the two spaces. Toyota says the structure had to support off-road use while accommodating the twisting movement of the cab and camper over uneven ground, without compromising the vehicle or creating an unsafe driving situation.

- Fitment: The truck bed soft topper fits the 2016-2023 Tacoma with the 6ft bed. Constructed with steel bases, aluminum alloy support poles, water-resistant and tear-resistant Oxford fabric, and high-clarity PVC films
- Flexible & Foldable: The roll-up rear and side windows provide excellent ventilation when passengers or pets are in the truck bed. When not in use, the Tacoma bed cap folds down easily for compact storage, which makes it more versatile than hardcovers
- Wind & Vibration Resistant Dual Tail Buckle: Reinforced dual tail buckle with upgraded shock absorbing structure. Secures tightly on rough roads, effectively blocking dust and moisture to protect stored cargo
- Superior Protection & Versatility: Our soft camper shell provides security for your cargo and can hide your items to prevent casual theft. It is suitable for camping, work, and sports events, from work to play, we've got you covered
- Anti-Pooling Design: Stay dry with our advanced anti-pooling design. A strategically placed top support pole on the roof prevents water accumulation during rainfall
The build also incorporated a pop-up Lexan skylight for light, ventilation and additional headroom. Toyota says the fuel filler was separated from the camper to isolate fuel fumes, and a second battery in the engine bay supplied additional power without taking up limited interior room.

These are details of this particular prototype, not a general fitment recommendation. The tire size may serve as a parts reference, but it does not establish compatibility with every Tacoma year, trim, wheel or suspension setup. Could you copy the Tacozilla approach for an overland Tacoma?
You can take design cues from Tacozilla, but reproducing its appearance is not the same as safely duplicating its engineering. Removing a bed, adding a camper frame, cutting or connecting structures, and integrating fuel and electrical systems all affect a vehicle as a system. Toyota’s account specifically highlights the need for the cab and camper connection to handle structural movement off road.
Toyota warned that Tacozilla was a special prototype modified with non-genuine parts and accessories that may make it illegal to operate, void the warranty, and affect safety and performance. That warning matters to anyone considering a similar build: have the work assessed for the exact truck and intended use, and check applicable local vehicle rules and warranty terms. The unveiling does not establish that Tacozilla’s components or construction are certified or suitable for another Tacoma.

Without those values, photos and feature lists cannot tell you how much payload a comparable build would leave, how it would drive, or what it would cost. A meaningful comparison with other pickup campers would need the base truck, structural design, interior and sleeping capacity, added weight and remaining payload, trail clearance, power and water systems, and legal and warranty implications—not appearance alone.
