The 1983 Nissan 300ZX Turbo is a strong candidate for the title of overlooked turbocharged V6 coupe—but “most overlooked” is a judgment, not a ranking Nissan’s records can prove. The appeal is easier to establish: Nissan’s archived Z31 example pairs a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with a distinctive long-nose shape, and it belongs to a generation often overshadowed by the later Z32 Twin-Turbo.
Which car does the title point to?
The title does not identify a make, model, market, or year. A well-supported interpretation is the 1983 Nissan 300ZX Turbo, chassis generation Z31. Nissan’s Heritage Collection describes an archived example as the “NISSAN 300ZX Turbo T-top 50th Anniversary (1983 : HZ31)” and identifies its engine as the VG30ET, a turbocharged V6. Nissan Heritage Collection.
Calling it the most overlooked is an editorial case rather than a documented popularity fact: the available official sources establish what the car was, but do not compare its public recognition or collector attention with other coupes.
What made the Z31 300ZX Turbo distinctive?
A turbocharged V6 with documented output
For Nissan’s archived 1983 Canadian-spec 50th-anniversary example, the VG30ET displaces 2,960 cc and is rated at 200 ps at 5,200 rpm, with 308 N·m of torque at 3,600 rpm. These are figures for that cited car, not a universal rating for every Z31 model year or market. Nissan Heritage Collection.

A shape that announced a new generation
Nissan describes the Z31 with a long-nose, short-deck profile and semi-retractable “Parallel Rising Headlamps.” The company gives a drag coefficient of 0.31 for the cited car description. Those details make the Z31 more than a stepping stone to the later 300ZX: they are part of the character of this generation. Nissan Heritage Collection.
A milestone in the Fairlady Z story
Nissan says the third-generation Fairlady Z launched in 1983 as the series reached one million cumulative vehicles. That is a total for the Fairlady series up to that point—not a Z31 production figure. Nissan Heritage Collection.

How the Z31 differs from the better-known Z32 Twin-Turbo
The generations are easy to confuse because both wore the 300ZX name and used V6 engines. Nissan dates the Z32’s launch to June 10, 1989. That later generation’s 3.0-liter DOHC V6 was available naturally aspirated or twin-turbocharged; Nissan’s archive also documents a 2by2 Z32 Twin-Turbo example. Those specifications belong to the Z32, not the earlier Z31 and its VG30ET single-turbo configuration. The useful distinction is not simply “old turbo” versus “new twin-turbo.” They are separate generations with different engine descriptions; figures or features from one should not be used to characterize the other.

Why might the Z31 be overlooked?
Its place between earlier Z cars and the celebrated Z32 makes it an easy car to treat as a transition rather than a subject in its own right. That is a plausible explanation for why enthusiasts may discuss it less, but the official sources cited here do not establish a measurable ranking or prove a cause. The defensible case is that the Z31 deserves attention on its own terms: it introduced a turbocharged V6 example with documented output and a clearly identified design language.

Generation and configuration matter before ordering parts or choosing a repair reference. The cited archive distinguishes the Z31’s VG30ET from the later Z32’s naturally aspirated and twin-turbo V6 options. Match any manual, replacement part, or restoration information to the exact year, Z31 or Z32 generation, engine, and market; a shared 300ZX badge does not establish fitment.
