If “large pickup” means a conventional full-size truck, the 2024 Ram 1500 HFE 2WD is a strong answer for best gasoline fuel economy among standard pickups: the U.S. Department of Energy and EPA list it at 23 mpg combined, with 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. That is a rating for this specific 2WD configuration, not every Ram 1500. Electric pickups are also listed in the guide, but their ratings use MPGe, so they should be compared separately rather than described as gasoline MPG.
What counts as a large pickup?
The 2024 U.S. Fuel Economy Guide does not define a “large pickup” category. It divides trucks into “small pickup trucks” and “standard pickup trucks.” For a full-size-truck comparison, standard pickups are the closest fit; the answer depends on keeping that class boundary clear.
The distinction matters: the 2024 Ford Maverick HEV FWD is rated at 37 mpg combined (42 city/33 highway), but it appears in the guide’s small-pickup section. That figure should not be used to name the most efficient full-size truck. The 2024 Fuel Economy Guide lists ratings by vehicle configuration and class.
Best gasoline-MPG answer: Ram 1500 HFE 2WD
Among the standard pickups’ gasoline-MPG entries, the Ram 1500 HFE 2WD is rated at 23 mpg combined. Its rating is 20 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway.

These are EPA fuel-economy ratings, not a promise of what every driver will achieve. Actual mileage can vary with driving conditions and vehicle use. The guide’s figures are configuration-specific, so do not assume the HFE rating applies to a 4WD Ram or a different trim.
How electric pickups compare
The guide also includes electric pickups, but reports their efficiency in MPGe—miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent energy—not MPG from burning gasoline. Those figures are useful for comparing electric-vehicle energy efficiency, but they are not directly interchangeable with gasoline MPG.

For a broad efficiency comparison that includes electric trucks, keep MPGe visibly separate from MPG and state that the units measure different things. For the straightforward question of which 2024 full-size truck has the best gasoline mileage, the Ram 1500 HFE 2WD’s 23 mpg combined rating is the relevant answer.

That is an average across the pickup fleet, not the rating of a single model or a contest for the most efficient truck. EPA’s Automotive Trends data covers new U.S. light-duty vehicles and reports fleet data based on production volumes delivered for sale in the United States by model year.
