By Consumer Reports’ 2024 reliability survey, the gas-powered Toyota RAV4 was the most reliable individual vehicle—and it comfortably exceeded 50,000 U.S. sales in calendar year 2024, with 475,193 sold. That makes it the strongest-supported answer for the U.S. market, not a universal reliability winner across every study or country.
Why the Toyota RAV4 qualifies
Consumer Reports’ coverage of its 2024 survey named the gas-powered Toyota RAV4 the most reliable individual vehicle, with the Toyota Corolla next. Toyota Motor North America reported 475,193 RAV4 sales in the United States for calendar year 2024, well above the 50,000-unit threshold. The two figures describe different things: the reliability result is from a survey published in 2024, while the sales number counts U.S. calendar-year 2024 sales. They do not establish that every RAV4 sold was a 2024 model-year vehicle.
What “most reliable” means here
Consumer Reports bases its reliability analysis on detailed reports from members about problems with their vehicles, using those reports to calculate predicted reliability. Its reliability histories cover 20 potential trouble areas. The survey is not a controlled durability test, and its subscriber respondents do not represent every vehicle buyer or necessarily the full population of buyers of a particular vehicle type. So the precise claim is that the gas-powered RAV4 led Consumer Reports’ 2024 individual-vehicle results. It should not be read as a guarantee that a particular RAV4 will be trouble-free.
Why other reliability rankings may name something else
Different studies measure different things and rank different groups. Consumer Reports’ 2024 survey named Subaru its most reliable brand, followed by Lexus and Toyota, while naming the gas-powered RAV4 its top individual vehicle. A brand ranking and a model ranking answer different questions.

J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study measures problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles during the previous 12 months. It reported an industry average of 190 problems per 100 vehicles, ranked Lexus highest overall and Toyota highest among mass-market brands, and identified winners within vehicle segments. - Market: The qualifying sales figure is for the United States; it does not establish that the RAV4 exceeded 50,000 sales in every country.
- Sales period: Toyota’s 475,193 figure is for calendar year 2024, not a model-year tally.
- Vehicle: Consumer Reports’ individual-vehicle reliability leader was the gas-powered RAV4; the result should not be extended to every RAV4 powertrain.
- Reliability source: The answer follows Consumer Reports’ 2024 survey. A different ranking can reflect another definition, vehicle age, respondent population, or unit of comparison.
