Whether it is affordable is a separate question: current prices and ownership costs are not established here, and the condition and repair history of an individual car can change the calculation substantially. The M156 engine’s reported camshaft and valvetrain concerns make a well-documented example—and a specialist inspection—more important than a low asking price alone.
Why the W211 E63 has sleeper appeal
The W211 E63 is an earlier-generation E63 AMG, not the later W212. Its understated E-Class sedan or wagon shape can disguise its performance intent, while its M156 V8 supplies the central mechanical appeal. That combination makes “sleeper” a reasonable description; it does not make every example a bargain or a safe purchase.
There is not enough current market or transaction data here to call the W211 E63 cheap to buy, and no verified annual ownership budget is available. To judge affordability in your area, compare a specific car’s price and condition with its documented repairs, the findings of an independent inspection, and the repair work it may need. A low purchase price is not a measure of total cost.
What to know about the M156 before buying
A specialist guide to the later W212 E63 discusses reports of camshaft and lifter problems in M156 engines and describes them as issues thought to be a legacy from W211-era cars. It also notes reported camshaft-lobe failures, particularly on the intake side, and camshaft-adjuster failures. This is cross-generation specialist commentary, not a W211-specific failure-rate study. Review records and prior engine work
Ask for complete service and repair records, paying particular attention to documented engine work. Records can show what has already been addressed; they cannot, by themselves, establish the present condition of the engine. The sources reviewed do not provide an engine serial-number cutoff for these concerns, a complete W211 inspection checklist, or exact repair costs.
Arrange a specialist inspection
Before committing, have a Mercedes-AMG specialist assess the specific car. A prudent inspection can include cold-start behavior, engine noise, diagnostic results, service records, and evidence of previous engine repairs. These are sensible areas to review given the reported concerns, not a source-verified diagnostic protocol or a guarantee that an inspection will predict future failures.

Road-test the W211’s own transmission
Do not assume the W211 has the later W212’s seven-speed MCT transmission. The specialist guide distinguishes the W211’s older gearbox from the W212 MCT and characterizes the older box as inclined to upshift sooner. During a road test, assess the shift behavior of the actual car and ask for records that establish its maintenance and any repairs. The cited guide does not provide a complete transmission service schedule.
Check the car’s recall status by VIN
Mercedes-Benz USA filed NHTSA Part 573 Safety Recall Report 21V-196 on August 5, 2021. It lists 92 model-year 2007 E63 sedans and four model-year 2007 E63 wagons in a sunroof-bonding recall population identified through production records. Those counts describe the vehicles listed in that filing; they are not total W211 E63 production figures or a measure of the likelihood that another car is affected. NHTSA Part 573 report 21V-196

The filing does not establish that every W211 E63 is covered. Check the individual car’s VIN with NHTSA’s recall lookup or Mercedes-Benz, and ask the seller for documentation of any completed recall repair.
