Volkswagen has ended local U.S. production of the ID.4, but that does not mean U.S. sales have already stopped. Volkswagen of America is still listing customer bonuses for eligible new ID.4s: $12,500 on a 2025 model and $6,000 on a 2026 model, under an offer scheduled to run through November 2, 2026. The model years have different incentives, and participating-dealer stock and eligibility matter.
What Volkswagen has discontinued—and what it has not said
Volkswagen Group’s 2026 update says it has “discontinued local production of the electric ID.4” in the United States. The company said its Chattanooga plant will focus on higher-volume internal-combustion models such as the Atlas, citing changed market conditions. That announcement is about U.S. manufacturing; it does not say that all U.S. ID.4 sales have ended. Volkswagen’s U.S. site still lists a 2026 ID.4 model and current offers. Volkswagen Group’s update and Volkswagen’s U.S. model page provide those respective details.
The announcement also does not establish whether or when a successor will arrive in the United States, or what it would be called. Volkswagen Group’s H1 2026 financial update separately reports around €0.5 billion in costs associated with discontinuing U.S. ID.4 production; that is a company-reported production-discontinuation cost, not the amount of the customer bonus. How the $12,500 ID.4 bonus works
Volkswagen of America’s published offer is a model-year-specific customer bonus, not a blanket $12,500 discount on every ID.4. The offer period is September 1 through November 2, 2026, through participating dealers. Volkswagen says the bonus can be applied toward purchase or lease and is not redeemable for cash. Volkswagen’s published terms exclude fleet and dealership-sale vehicles, allow one bonus per VIN, and limit eligible customers to two Volkswagen vehicles per year. A dealer must confirm whether a particular vehicle and buyer qualify. Because the offer has a scheduled end date and applies through participating dealers, verify the current terms and the vehicle’s eligibility before relying on it.
What to check before accepting a quote
The larger 2025 bonus does not by itself prove that a 2025 ID.4 is the better deal. Compare the final written price and terms for the actual vehicles available near you. Ask the dealer to show the bonus as a line item and confirm that it is reflected in the deal rather than treated as cash payable to you.

- Confirm the vehicle’s model year, trim, drivetrain and actual local availability.
- Compare the written purchase price after the bonus with the lease payment, due-at-signing amount, term, mileage allowance and other lease terms, if you are considering a lease.
- Check financing terms separately; an advertised bonus does not establish the rate or total cost of financing.
- Compare range and charging equipment for the specific trim, rather than assuming all ID.4s are identical.
- Ask the dealer to confirm the bonus appears in the written offer and that you meet Volkswagen’s eligibility conditions.
2026 ID.4 price, range and charging details
Volkswagen lists a $45,095 starting MSRP for the 2026 ID.4. Its U.S. model page gives EPA-estimated range of 291 miles for the Pro and Pro S, and 263 miles for the listed AWD Pro, AWD Pro S and AWD Pro S Plus trims. These are trim-specific estimates, not a guarantee of real-world range.
Volkswagen also describes a 24-month Electrify America Pass+ plan for eligible new 2026 vehicles purchased through an authorized U.S.-based Volkswagen dealer; account setup and other terms apply. For compatible Tesla Supercharger sites, Volkswagen says the 2026 ID.4 requires compatible vehicle hardware and a Volkswagen-approved NACS DC adapter, sold separately. Tesla’s compatible DC sites and other conditions limit where that setup can be used. Check the 2026 ID.4 page for the current specifications and charging terms. The cited official information does not provide a comprehensive 2025-versus-2026 equipment comparison.

Why the production decision matters to buyers
Carscoops reports U.S. ID.4 sales of 37,789 in 2023, 17,021 in 2024, 22,373 in 2025 and 2,205 in the first half of 2026. The figures show a steep drop from 2023, a rebound in 2025, and a low partial-year total in the first six months of 2026; the H1 figure is not a full-year comparison. These are Carscoops-reported numbers, rather than a sales series independently confirmed here from a Volkswagen release. Carscoops’ report gives the figures.
For a shopper, the immediate practical questions are whether the specific model-year vehicle is in stock, whether it qualifies for the published bonus, and what the complete written deal costs. The end of local production is a separate development; it is not, by itself, confirmation that unsold vehicles can no longer be bought in the United States.
