His argument is a business thesis, not evidence that IONNA is already profitable or that its economics are settled.
What did IONNA’s CEO say?
In an October 1, 2026 report, The Drive quoted Seth Cutler describing IONNA as “a for-profit business” and saying, “We know the company has to get to financial independence and profitability over time.” He argued that charging infrastructure needs a sustainable business model: “Infrastructure has to be for-profit or it’ll never survive, and if it never survives, EVs will never survive.”
That last line is Cutler’s view, not a demonstrated forecast about the entire EV market. The reporting does not establish that every charging operator must be profitable for EV adoption to continue, or that any one network’s financial results determine the fate of electric vehicles.
Does IONNA make money now?
The available reporting does not establish that IONNA is currently profitable. It provides no audited financial statements, site-level margins, verified break-even point or timeline to profitability. Cutler’s statement is about the company’s goal over time—not a claim that it has already reached that goal.

Network growth, construction activity and a price per kilowatt-hour do not by themselves show whether a charging company earns a profit. Those figures describe deployment and customer pricing; assessing profitability would also require documented costs, utilization, revenue and other financial information.
What is IONNA, and how large is its network?
IONNA is a public high-power charging network jointly owned by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis and Toyota. Its “Rechargery” concept combines fast charging with driver amenities such as canopies, restrooms, food, lounges or convenience retail; the amenities vary by site.
Published rollout figures are dated snapshots, not a live network count. Axios reported on July 8, 2026 that the company had 120 Rechargery locations open across 31 states, with 60 more under construction. A MotorTrend report from March 2026, marking IONNA’s second anniversary, cited more than 100 open sites and over 1,500 high-power charging bays under construction.

Those are different measures: locations, sites and charging bays are not interchangeable. The Drive reported a separate company goal of at least 30,000 chargers and 2,000 stations in the United States by 2030, with Canada to follow. That is a target, not an achieved count; a charger and a station are distinct units.

Why is making public fast charging pay a challenge?
Public DC fast charging requires substantial investment in land, equipment and construction. A site’s costs and performance can also depend on utility power, demand charges, permitting and the time and expense of connecting to the grid. These factors help explain why charger utilization and geographic density matter: expensive infrastructure must be used often enough to support its costs.
The Volts interview with Cutler discusses these operational pressures, as well as reliability, power delivery and amenities. It does not provide IONNA’s actual site economics, so it cannot support a calculation of margins or a break-even threshold for the network.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
What could IONNA’s business model include?
IONNA’s approach includes multiple site formats and retail relationships. The Drive named Circle K, Wawa, Sheetz and Casey’s; Axios also reported relationships with Sheetz, Wawa and Circle K. Cutler described owning land, developing some amenities and retaining room for future expansion or co-tenants. These arrangements suggest possible ways to develop charging sites, but the reports do not establish the financial terms or economics of individual deals.
Cutler told The Drive that other monetization or driver-value opportunities were not an immediate focus, though they could receive resources in 2027, 2028 or later. That is a possibility he described, not evidence that those revenue streams are already operating or will necessarily be pursued on that schedule.

Axios reported in July 2026 that IONNA charged 39 cents per kilowatt-hour compared with 64 cents per kilowatt-hour at Electrify America. That was a dated comparison, before individual automaker discounts; prices and discounts can change. It is not a current rate guarantee or evidence of either network’s profit.

Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.

Axios also reported that IONNA’s 400-kW chargers offered both NACS and CCS connectors and cited integration with a Toyota vehicle app. Connector availability, charging power, site access and app integrations can vary by location, vehicle and time. A Stellantis-hosted IONNA report describes access through multiple automaker apps, credits tied to certain eligible vehicle offers and the rollout status of Plug & Charge at the time it was published. Offers and eligibility depend on brand, model year and terms; check with the automaker for current details.
What would show whether charging is becoming sustainable?
A meaningful comparison of charging businesses needs consistent measures and dated, comparable data. Useful factors include:
- Network scale, geographic density and charger utilization.
- Investment in land, construction and charging equipment.
- Electricity costs, demand charges, interconnection and permitting.
- Retail prices per kilowatt-hour and the effect of automaker discounts.
- Reliability, uptime, delivered power and payment experience.
- Site amenities and the role of retail or other partners.
- How the network is funded, alongside evidence of operating profitability.
Volts discusses IONNA alongside IONITY, a longer-running European automaker-backed network, but the interview is not a standardized financial comparison. It does not support ranking the networks by profitability.
