The new Volkswagen California eHybrid 4MOTION is better understood as a versatile camper MPV than a serious off-road vehicle. Its plug-in-hybrid system combines a 245-PS powertrain, a 19.7-kWh battery and an electric motor on each axle. That gives the T7-based California useful extra traction on wet grass, mud, gravel and snow while retaining the ability to drive electrically for short everyday journeys.
The important qualification is that 4MOTION does not turn this long, low-slung camper into a trail truck. UK Volkswagen figures list around 162 mm of ground clearance, a maximum braked towing rating of 1,570 kg for the eHybrid and trim-dependent payloads as low as approximately 287 kg. The system is aimed at reaching campsites and handling mixed-surface trips—not rock crawling.
What is new about the T7 Volkswagen California?
The current California is based on the long-wheelbase, MQB-based T7 Multivan rather than the previous Transporter-derived California 6.1 platform. That change gives Volkswagen more room to rethink the interior and camping equipment.
The vehicle is 5,173 mm long and approximately 1,972 mm high in the UK specification. Despite its length, Volkswagen says the height remains suitable for most multi-storey car parks. It has two sliding doors, a standard pop-up roof and individually repositionable rear seats. The latter helps the California switch between camper, passenger vehicle and cargo carrier, including carrying bulky equipment such as a bicycle.

The longer Multivan foundation also supports a revised kitchen layout. Instead of placing the cooking equipment where it interferes with the main cabin, Volkswagen moves the kitchen toward the rear and makes the cool box accessible from inside and outside on the better-equipped versions.
The eHybrid 4MOTION powertrain, updated
Launch-period descriptions of the California’s plug-in hybrid should be treated as historical. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles subsequently announced the eHybrid 4MOTION system for the Multivan and California in June 2025. The current UK information describes the California eHybrid 4MOTION as follows:
- Engine and system output: a 1.5-litre petrol-based eHybrid system producing 245 PS.
- Battery: 19.7 kWh lithium-ion.
- Drive: electric all-wheel drive, with one electric motor on each axle.
- Transmission: six-speed DSG.
- Electric range: up to 53 miles WLTP, depending on trim and specification.
The two conventional UK powertrain families are a 2.0-litre TDI diesel producing 150 PS and a 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine producing 204 PS. Those versions do not provide the eHybrid’s electric all-wheel-drive arrangement.
How the electric four-wheel drive works
The rear axle is driven by an electric motor rather than by a conventional mechanical driveshaft running from the front powertrain. That allows the California to add rear-axle traction when the control system determines it is useful.

Sport and Individual settings allow broader rear-axle involvement. The manufacturer’s June 2025 announcement also says the rear axle remains deactivated above 130 km/h. In practical terms, this is a traction system designed to deploy power where it helps at lower speeds, not a permanent mechanical 4×4 system intended for high-speed off-road driving.
What “all-terrain” means in this camper
The strongest case for the eHybrid 4MOTION is the ordinary bad surface a camper encounters on a good trip:
- wet grass at a campsite;
- muddy pitches after rain;
- loose gravel and uneven access roads;
- snow-covered roads and parking areas;
- slippery inclines where a front-wheel-drive camper might struggle for traction.
Those are precisely the conditions Volkswagen highlights. The electric rear motor should also provide smooth, controllable low-speed assistance, which is useful when maneuvering a large vehicle onto a pitch.

That does not make the California an extreme off-roader. The approximately 162-mm ground-clearance figure is modest for a vehicle marketed as an off-road specialist. The California is also 5.17 metres long, has camper-focused bodywork and was not presented with independent trail testing in the available evidence. Its long wheelbase and low clearance can become liabilities on deep ruts, sharp breakovers, rocks and steep departure terrain.

Camping layouts: Beach Camper, Coast and Ocean
Beach Camper
The Beach Camper uses a rear slide-out mini-kitchen. It includes a single-ring gas burner, cutlery storage, a storage drawer and a 230-volt socket. With the tailgate raised, the rear of the vehicle can provide some shelter while cooking.
This arrangement is deliberately compact and outdoor-oriented. Cooking takes place largely outside the main cabin, leaving the interior less crowded during the day. It is a useful fit for buyers who want a flexible daily vehicle and a simple sleeping-and-cooking setup rather than a self-contained motorhome.
Coast and Ocean
The Coast and Ocean versions receive a more complete kitchenette and a pull-out cool box. Volkswagen also describes improved access to the gas cylinder and a more space-efficient kitchen arrangement. The cool box’s inside-and-outside accessibility is one of the practical benefits of moving the kitchen rearward.
All versions have the pop-up roof, whose front opening and side windows include mosquito nets. The roof adds sleeping capacity and ventilation without requiring a permanently tall body. The exact equipment, upholstery, appliances and trim details can vary by market, so buyers should check the local specification rather than assuming that a UK Beach, Coast or Ocean equipment list applies elsewhere.
Managing the campsite from inside the vehicle
Depending on trim, California functions can be managed through the main infotainment system, a dedicated five-inch control unit mounted in the C-pillar, or the California app. The available controls and displays can cover:

Volkswagen’s in-car California app can also help occupants find nearby campsites and pitches, save destinations, navigate to selected locations and view contact details where that information is available. This is a convenience feature, not a guarantee of live availability or complete campsite coverage; destination data and app functions can vary by country and software version.
Range and charging: useful, but not a substitute for a large battery
In current UK material, the eHybrid’s electric range is listed at approximately 53.4 miles for the Beach Camper, 52.8 miles for the Coast and 52.2 miles for the Ocean in the quoted configurations. Volkswagen’s consumer-facing information rounds this to “up to 53 miles.”
These are WLTP laboratory figures. Real range can be lower with cold weather, a fully loaded camper, roof equipment, motorway speeds, hills, heating or air-conditioning use and low tyre pressures. A camper’s mass and shape make it especially unwise to treat the maximum WLTP number as a guaranteed road-trip distance.
Charging is comparatively quick on paper:
| Charging method | Manufacturer figure |
|---|---|
| AC, 0–100% | Approximately 2.5 hours at up to 11 kW |
| DC, 10–80% | Approximately 26 minutes at up to 40 kW |
These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results. Actual charging time depends on the charger, battery temperature, state of charge, installation and other conditions. The eHybrid therefore makes the most sense for an owner who can charge at home or regularly at a destination, then use petrol power for longer journeys.
Towing, payload and roof limits matter more in a camper
The eHybrid’s traction advantage comes with compromises that buyers should calculate before ordering.
| Specification in UK material | eHybrid California | Diesel/petrol comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum braked trailer rating | Up to 1,570 kg | Up to 2,000 kg |
| Approximate payload | About 369 kg Beach, 308 kg Coast, 287 kg Ocean | Varies by powertrain and trim |
Payload is the number that can quietly decide whether the PHEV works for a family. It includes occupants, luggage, food, water, camping equipment, accessories and options—not just items placed in the rear. The approximately 287-kg Ocean figure leaves considerably less margin than many buyers might expect once several people and a full camping load are aboard. Options and market-specific homologation can also change the final figure.
The eHybrid’s 1,570-kg braked towing limit is also lower than the up-to-2,000-kg figure listed for the conventional powertrains. If towing a large caravan, boat or utility trailer is central to the vehicle’s job, the diesel or petrol version may be the more appropriate choice despite lacking the PHEV’s electric traction system.

UK brochure figures also list maximum roof loads of 100 kg with two roof carriers or 150 kg with at least four roof carriers, plus a maximum roof-bed load of 200 kg. These limits are not a universal license to fit any roof box, rack, awning or cargo system. Accessory weight, mounting points, dynamic versus static loading and local regulations all need to be checked for the specific vehicle and equipment.
What the California still cannot do
The revised California remains a compact camper rather than a full motorhome. The most significant omission for some buyers is an integrated bathroom. There is no built-in toilet-and-shower room comparable with what buyers may expect in a larger motorhome; those who need that facility may need to consider Volkswagen’s larger Grand California or make separate campsite arrangements.
The PHEV also does not eliminate the normal compromises of a camper MPV:
- electric range is limited compared with a dedicated long-range EV;
- the battery and camping equipment reduce payload flexibility;
- the eHybrid tows less than the conventional engines in the UK specification;
- the long body is not ideal for narrow tracks or severe terrain;
- trim-level kitchen and control features are not identical;
- market availability, prices, charging equipment and homologation vary by country.
Which California powertrain makes sense?
Choose the eHybrid 4MOTION if you can charge regularly, want quiet electric driving for short trips, commonly camp on wet grass or loose surfaces, and do not need the highest towing rating. It is the most versatile option for mixed urban, highway and campsite use, provided its payload works for your passenger and equipment list.
Choose the diesel if long-distance touring, high annual mileage or towing close to the maximum matters more than electric commuting. Its UK-rated maximum trailer weight is higher than the eHybrid’s.
Choose the petrol version if you want the conventional powertrain’s simplicity and do not need diesel operation or plug-in capability. It still has the California’s camping layout, but not the eHybrid’s electric rear-axle traction.
Before choosing, weigh the vehicle as you expect to travel: people, water, food, bicycles, awning, chairs, electrical equipment and roof accessories. The attractive idea of electric all-wheel drive should not obscure the more basic question of whether the loaded camper remains within its legal payload and axle limits.

Accessory planning for a T7 California
Owners considering Volkswagen California camper accessories should start with the exact trim, model year, roof configuration and powertrain. A shade, storage organizer, rack, cooler or electrical product that fits one California version may not suit another, and roof-load limits must be respected. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information and installation instructions; a generic marketplace listing is not proof of factory approval.
The most logical accessory categories are vehicle-specific awnings, blackout shades, storage organizers, cooking and power equipment, and bicycle or roof-carrying systems. On the eHybrid, also consider how added weight affects the trim’s payload and whether an accessory interferes with the pop-up roof, rear kitchen, sliding doors or charging connections.
Availability depends on where you live
The detailed figures in this article are primarily from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ UK materials, supplemented by Volkswagen’s June 2025 European eHybrid 4MOTION announcement. Trim names, prices, equipment, charging standards, towing figures, certification and order status can differ by country.
In particular, the presence of the California eHybrid 4MOTION in European or UK information should not be read as confirmation that it is sold in the United States. Volkswagen’s consumer pages can also show different status messages for existing stock and new orders, so buyers should verify local inventory and ordering directly before treating the vehicle as available.
The safest purchase process is to confirm the exact local trim sheet, electric-range rating, charging specification, towing limit, payload, roof limits and delivery status. A test drive should include the seating position and access arrangements that matter to your camping group, not only a short road loop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the VW California eHybrid 4MOTION a real off-road camper?
It is better described as a camper with improved traction on wet grass, mud, gravel and snow. Its approximately 162 mm of ground clearance, 5,173-mm length and camper-focused body do not support describing it as a hardcore trail vehicle.
How far can the California eHybrid drive on electricity?
UK WLTP figures are approximately 52.2 to 53.4 miles depending on Beach Camper, Coast or Ocean trim. Volkswagen rounds this to up to 53 miles. Real range varies with temperature, load, speed, terrain and accessory use.
What is the California eHybrid 4MOTION’s towing capacity?
The current UK figure is up to 1,570 kg for a braked trailer. That is lower than the up-to-2,000-kg rating listed for the conventional diesel and petrol powertrains.

Does the VW California have a bathroom?
No. The California does not have an integrated bathroom. Buyers who need a built-in toilet and shower should compare it with a larger motorhome such as Volkswagen’s Grand California.
Is the California eHybrid 4MOTION available in the United States?
The supplied detailed specifications are primarily UK and European. Availability in the United States should not be assumed; local buyers must confirm whether the model is sold, certified and orderable in their market.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The VW California eHybrid 4MOTION adds meaningful campsite versatility through electric all-wheel drive, a useful plug-in range and the T7 Multivan’s flexible interior. It is a strong choice for mixed-surface camping and everyday electric trips, but not an extreme off-road machine. Check payload first, especially on the Coast and Ocean, and remember that the PHEV tows less than the conventional versions.
