What it’s like to ride a self-driving Waymo car is mostly familiar rideshare logistics without a human driver: request or accept the trip, find the vehicle, unlock it with the app, buckle up, and press Start ride. The passenger screen explains some driving decisions while the Waymo Driver handles the road.
The unusual part is the combination of an empty driver’s seat and a visible explanation of what the car is detecting. The following practical account is based on Waymo’s current rider guidance, not a first-hand test.

How do you request and find a Waymo?
You request a Waymo through the Waymo app in eligible markets, although availability depends on the service area and nearby vehicle supply. In Austin and Atlanta, eligible riders may receive a Waymo when requesting a qualifying trip through Uber, but a Waymo match is not guaranteed. Waymo’s official Uber partnership information explains the current booking arrangement.
When the vehicle arrives, the Waymo app identifies it and can help you locate it with walking directions, a melody, or a brief horn sound. Waymo says the vehicle can also be identified by the rider’s initials displayed on the roof dome. The car arrives locked, so another person cannot simply open the door and board before you verify the vehicle.

What do you do when the Waymo arrives?
Use the Waymo app to unlock the doors, enter the cabin, sit in any permitted seat, fasten your seat belt, and press Start ride on the passenger screen. Waymo’s own instruction is: “Our autonomous driving system will be doing the driving, so once the vehicle arrives you’ll unlock the doors, hop in, buckle up, and press Start ride to get moving.” The statement comes from Waymo’s official fully autonomous FAQs.
There is no human driver waiting in the front seat during a fully autonomous trip. The driver’s seat, steering wheel, pedals, gear selector, and other driving controls are off limits. Riders may sit in the front passenger seat if they are age 8 or older, subject to the applicable rider rules. A maximum of four people may ride together, and everyone must wear a seat belt. Waymo’s rider rules provide the current requirements.

What does a Waymo ride feel like once the car is moving?
The first unusual detail is the empty driver’s position. A familiar rideshare cabin is present, but nobody is holding the wheel or watching the road in the conventional way. The Waymo Driver is responsible for the driving task while the rider sits as a passenger.
After the initial surprise, the passenger display becomes an important part of the experience. The screen can show a simplified representation of the surrounding scene and may identify objects or situations that affect the car’s behavior. For example, the display may explain that the vehicle is yielding to pedestrians. A pause that might seem unexplained in a conventional rideshare can therefore have visible context on the screen.
Waymo describes its autonomous system as cautious and defensive. As a result, riders may encounter extra waiting, conservative gaps, unusual-but-permitted route choices, or braking that feels more sudden than a particular human driver’s braking. Waymo’s official wording is: “Waymo’s autonomous driving system is designed to be cautious and defensive, so some of its movements will feel different than a human driver’s.” That is a documented operating characteristic, not a claim about how every individual ride will feel.
During a normal trip, the rider can watch the route, use a phone, adjust the cabin, or simply observe the vehicle’s decisions. The car is not expected to explain every action, but the passenger screen can make selected actions more understandable and provides a direct way to contact Support.

What can you use inside a Waymo?
A Waymo cabin supports several ordinary passenger activities. Riders can adjust the temperature, use the window controls, select iHeartRadio stations, and connect Spotify or YouTube Music Premium accounts where those features are supported. The Waymo app and vehicle also provide trip-management functions and trunk access. Feature availability can vary by vehicle, market, account, and software version.
Luggage can go in the trunk. Waymo’s current guidance gives approximately 200 pounds of trunk capacity, with examples of three small carry-on pieces or two large checked bags measuring up to 29 by 21.5 by 13 inches. Those figures are operational guidance rather than a guarantee that every unusually shaped or oversized item will fit in every vehicle.

Are there cameras inside a Waymo?
Yes. Waymo’s rider guidance says interior cameras are on and recording for purposes including checking cleanliness, helping find lost items, providing emergency assistance, and checking that in-car rules are followed. Waymo separately says microphones are not active unless the rider connects with Support. The documented distinction is therefore cameras on, with audio not recorded unless Support is contacted; calling the ride entirely private or saying the vehicle never records would be inaccurate. Waymo’s trip guidance describes these cabin and trip features.
What happens if a Waymo stops or gets stuck?
If the autonomous system cannot confidently proceed, Waymo says the vehicle may safely stop. The rider should remain inside with the seat belt fastened unless there is an urgent reason to exit. Support can contact the rider, and Roadside Assistance may be sent if necessary. Waymo’s ride-interruption guidance describes the process.
Human Support does not mean a human is remotely steering the car. Waymo says its vehicles are not remotely operated; when the vehicle is in autonomous mode, the autonomous system remains responsible for driving. Support can communicate with the rider, provide context, and arrange assistance without taking over the driving task.

How much does a Waymo ride cost?
Waymo shows the trip price before booking. Waymo says the price is based on the most direct route, and the fare does not change merely because the vehicle later reroutes or adapts its route. Prices may be higher during busy periods such as nights and weekends. There is no universal Waymo fare because the actual price depends on the route, date, market, demand, and booking channel; check the app for the specific trip before confirming.
Can children ride in a Waymo?
Children under 8 require a parent- or guardian-provided car seat or booster seat installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Waymo does not provide the seat, and children under 8 cannot sit in the front passenger seat. Families should bring the appropriate seat and allow time to install it before pressing Start ride.
Waymo welcomes service animals. Waymo asks riders to leave ordinary pets at home because other passengers may have allergies. The four-rider maximum still applies, and every rider must use a seat belt.
How accessible is a Waymo ride?
Waymo documents visual, audio, and haptic wayfinding in the app, screen-reader compatibility, text updates for riders who are deaf or hard of hearing, audio-detail preferences, and a setting intended to minimize walking at pickup and dropoff. The available feature set and request process depend on the market. Waymo’s accessibility guidance lists the documented options.

Wheelchair-accessible vehicle service requires an important qualification: Waymo’s documented WAV option is manually driven, not autonomous. The accessibility page lists app-based WAV requests in San Francisco and Los Angeles and Support-assisted requests in Phoenix. A rider should not assume that every autonomous Waymo can accommodate every wheelchair or mobility device.

Where can you ride in a Waymo?
According to Waymo’s current official FAQ, the Waymo ride-hailing service operates in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, Phoenix, San Antonio, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The FAQ says riders can take fully autonomous rides immediately in Los Angeles, Metro Phoenix, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, and San Francisco, while Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio are welcoming riders on a staged basis. Austin and Atlanta are served through Uber.

These city descriptions are not a permanent promise of coverage. Service geofences, waitlists, vehicle rollout, booking channels, and fleet availability can change. Check the Waymo app or the current official service-area information before planning a pickup, airport trip, event trip, or return journey.

The basic trip pattern is similar to a rideshare: request transportation, meet a vehicle, ride to a destination, and pay through the booking service. The major difference is who drives and what help is available if the trip becomes difficult.

Is Waymo safer than a human driver?
Waymo’s latest published safety analysis, covering 220.6 million rider-only miles through March 2026, reports 94% fewer serious-injury-or-worse crashes than its human-driver benchmark in the areas where Waymo operates. The same dashboard reports 82% fewer airbag-deployment crashes and 82% fewer injury-causing crashes. Waymo’s Safety Impact dashboard identifies Waymo as the source of these comparisons.
Those are Waymo’s company-published comparative analyses, not an independent test conducted for this article. Waymo says the comparisons use human-driver benchmarks for the same operating geographies and count crashes regardless of fault. The dashboard also explains that there is no perfect apples-to-apples comparison between human-driver and automated-vehicle data and describes geographic, temporal, and methodological adjustments.
Accordingly, the evidence supports a qualified comparison in the places and conditions covered by the analysis. It does not support claims that Waymo has never crashed, is perfectly safe, or is safer in every circumstance. Waymo summarizes its own conclusion this way: “The data to date indicate the Waymo Driver is already making roads safer in the places where we currently operate.”
What should you expect at the end of the trip?
The final part feels closer to ordinary rideshare logistics than to a technology demonstration. The Waymo may not stop directly at a shop entrance, building door, or exact requested destination. Waymo provides visual, audio, and haptic directions to help riders continue from the dropoff point. Before leaving, check the seat pockets, floor, and trunk, then follow the app’s directions to the final destination.
