The Vvolt Centauri II’s “insta-shifting” refers to automatic gear changes in a three-speed rear hub—not continuously variable gearing, and not automatic changes to motor power. The hub shifts as wheel speed changes; riders choose the motor’s pedal-assist mode separately.
What “insta-shifting” means on the Centauri II
The bike identified in the September 2024 New Atlas headline is the Vvolt Centauri II. Its AutoShift3 is a sealed, mechanical, internally geared rear hub. It shifts between three gears according to wheel speed, using centrifugal clutches, according to Vvolt’s product page. That makes it automatic shifting, but not an infinitely variable transmission: there are three discrete gear ratios.
The hub is separate from the mid-drive motor. The gear system responds mechanically to wheel speed; it does not set the motor’s output or choose a pedal-assist mode for the rider.
When it shifts—and what to do for a downshift
Vvolt says AutoShift3 upshifts at approximately 12 mph and 20 mph. Those are approximate shift points, not a promise that every change occurs at an exact speed in every riding situation.

Downshifting works differently from what a rider might expect from an electronic system that shifts on command. Vvolt’s riding guidance says the hub downshifts only while coasting. If you slow down and need a lower gear, ease off the pedals and coast for about one second to allow the change to engage. The guidance does not describe a rider-operated gear selector.
How the motor’s power is controlled
The motor’s assistance is managed separately through five pedal-assist modes. The rider selects the desired support level; the automatic hub does not raise or lower that setting as it changes gears. Vvolt’s boost button temporarily overrides the selected mode, providing four seconds of maximum assistance while pedaling between 5 and 20 mph, according to its support guidance.

Vvolt lists an Ananda mid-drive rated at 350 W nominal and 650 W peak, with 120 Nm of peak torque. Its technical specifications also list internal torque, cadence, speed and temperature sensors. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements or a guarantee of how the bike will feel in every condition. The battery is listed as 490 Wh and 36 V, and Vvolt says it is UL 2271 tested. See the technical specifications.
Range and other listed equipment
Vvolt advertises up to 60 miles of pedal-assist range. “Up to” is the manufacturer’s claim, not a guaranteed distance or an independent range-test result; actual range depends on riding conditions and assist mode.

The listed configuration also includes a Gates CDX belt drive, Shimano MT200 hydraulic brakes, integrated front and rear lights, and 27.5-inch wheels. Confirm the exact equipment for the bike being offered, because Vvolt’s later production note describes a different rear hub.
Availability and configuration: check the specific listing
As displayed on Vvolt’s product page when accessed in 2026, the AutoShift3 Centauri II was marked sold out. The page showed $2,399, reduced from $3,199, but a sold-out listing is not a currently purchasable offer. Vvolt’s electric-bike collection describes a future production run using a Shimano Nexus Inter-5E hub and three frame sizes. That note does not establish current stock or that the later configuration is available to order.

Before buying, confirm the hub type, frame size, inventory, price and shipping terms on the actual listing. The AutoShift3 behavior described above applies to the three-speed configuration, not automatically to a future bike with a different hub. Vvolt’s product page also lists a three-year warranty against manufacturer defects and a 14-day return or exchange period; check the current terms directly before relying on them.

- Gearing: How many gears are available, and are shifts mechanical or electronic?
- Downshifts: Can the system shift under pedal load, or must you coast? How long does a change take?
- Motor and battery: Compare motor torque, assist behavior and battery capacity, while treating advertised range as a claim tied to riding conditions.
- Fit and upkeep: Check mass, frame fit and drivetrain maintenance needs for the exact configuration.
- What is actually for sale: Verify inventory, hub, sizing and price rather than assuming a headline-era model matches a current listing.
