A steady VSA light on a Honda Accord means the Vehicle Stability Assist system has detected a fault or has been switched off. VSA combines traction control, stability control, ABS-related functions, and selective braking or engine-torque reduction. If the system is unavailable, the Accord may still drive and brake normally, but it may not correct wheelspin or a skid.
Do not assume the VSA module itself has failed. Wheel-speed sensors, wiring, tires, steering-angle calibration, battery voltage, the ABS/VSA modulator, and brake-system faults can all trigger the warning. The fastest route to the correct repair is an ABS/VSA scan—not repeated battery disconnections or replacing parts at random.
What the different VSA indicators mean

A steady VSA light by itself does not necessarily mean the Accord has lost basic braking. However, Honda recommends having the system checked promptly because the electronic assistance may not work when needed.
First checks before booking a repair
1. Make sure VSA was not switched off
Older Accords generally have a VSA OFF button. On a 2008–2012 Accord, press and hold the button until the vehicle beeps to partially disable VSA. Press and hold it again to restore the system. VSA also turns back on the next time the vehicle is started.

On a 2025 Accord, the setting is accessed through the driver-information interface:
- Stop completely and select P.
- Roll the right selector wheel to Vehicle Stability Assist Mode.
- Roll to Reduce traction control.
- Press the right selector wheel to check or uncheck the setting.
VSA OFF is intended as a temporary aid for freeing the vehicle from shallow mud or fresh snow. It is not a repair. Turn the system back on as soon as the vehicle is moving normally.
2. Check tire sizes and pressures
Compare all four tires with the specification on the driver’s door-jamb label. Check that:
- All four tires are the specified size.
- The tires have matching construction and, where applicable, the same type.
- Pressures match the door-jamb specification, not the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall.
- No tire is significantly different in diameter because of mismatched wear, size, or type.
VSA calculates wheel slip partly from the speeds of the four wheels. A different rolling circumference can look like wheelspin or a wheel-speed fault. Correcting an incorrect pressure or mismatched tire may remove a temporary warning, but a light that stays on still needs code diagnosis.
3. Consider a recent battery disconnection
VSA, ABS, TPMS, parking-brake, and brake-system warnings can appear temporarily after the 12-volt battery has been disconnected or replaced. On a current Accord, Honda’s procedure is to drive a short distance above 12 mph (20 km/h). The indicators should go out if the issue was only the lost initialization.

If a warning remains, have the vehicle inspected. Disconnecting the battery again is not a universal reset and can erase useful diagnostic information without repairing the fault.
Common causes of a VSA light on an Accord
Wheel-speed sensor, wiring, tone ring, or wheel bearing
Wheel-speed sensors provide the ABS/VSA controller with individual wheel-speed data. A failed sensor is only one possibility. Damaged wiring, a corroded connector, a damaged tone ring, or excessive wheel-bearing movement can produce the same symptom.
This fault often brings on other warnings, including ABS, brake, TPMS, or steering indicators. The proper repair is to identify the affected circuit, inspect the sensor and harness, and compare live wheel-speed readings. Do not replace all four sensors simply because the VSA light is illuminated.
Steering-angle sensor calibration or failure
The system compares the direction requested by the steering wheel with the vehicle’s actual movement. Calibration can be lost or required after alignment, steering or suspension work, battery-related events, or a collision.
Check that the front alignment is correct and that the steering wheel is centered. A technician can then perform the model-specific neutral-position procedure. Honda diagnostic information uses a path similar to Honda Systems → ABS/TCS/VSA → Adjustment → All Sensors, although the exact menu varies by model year and HDS software version.

Calibration will not fix a failed sensor, damaged wiring, or an alignment problem.
Low battery voltage or a charging-system problem
A weak battery, loose battery terminal, poor ground, or alternator problem can cause several modules to set communication and sensor faults. This is especially common after a low-voltage event or an incorrect battery replacement.
Test the battery, terminals, grounds, and charging system. Use the battery specification required for that particular Accord. If the battery was recently disconnected, follow the drive procedure rather than assuming the VSA warning identifies a failed control module.
ABS/VSA modulator-control-unit fault
The VSA modulator-control unit operates or coordinates ABS, electronic brake-force distribution, traction control, VSA, and brake assist. Internal pump, valve, motor, electronic, or communication faults can illuminate both VSA and ABS indicators.
Several warning lights do not prove the modulator is defective. Power supply, grounds, communication wiring, wheel-speed inputs, and other sensors must be checked before condemning an expensive module.

Brake-system or brake-fluid problem
A VSA light combined with a brake warning, low fluid, a soft pedal, increased pedal travel, or reduced braking ability requires urgent attention. The fact that the car still moves does not make a brake-related VSA fault safe to ignore.

Certain 2022 Accord and 2022 Accord Hybrid vehicles were recalled for a VSA modulator manufacturing defect that could cause Brake Hold malfunction, unexpected vehicle movement, and increased brake-pedal travel. Check the VIN through Honda’s recall lookup before paying for a repair. That recall does not mean every Accord with a VSA light has a defective modulator.
How to diagnose and fix the warning correctly
- Record every warning. Note the VSA, VSA OFF, ABS, brake, TPMS, steering, and Brake Hold indicators, along with any dashboard message.
- Record what happened beforehand. Important clues include a battery replacement, tire change, alignment, suspension repair, collision, curb impact, or deep pothole.
- Inspect the basics. Check tire sizes and pressures, battery connections, brake-fluid level, visible harness damage, and signs of a damaged wheel bearing or tone ring.
- Scan the ABS/VSA module. A basic engine-only OBD-II reader may communicate only with the powertrain computer. Use Honda’s Diagnostic System (HDS) or a professional scan tool that explicitly supports the Accord’s ABS/VSA system.
- Save the codes and freeze-frame information. Do this before clearing anything. The stored conditions can show vehicle speed, voltage, and which input failed.
- Follow the code’s test procedure. Test the named circuit, sensor, wiring, power, ground, and related mechanical parts. A code pointing to a wheel-speed circuit does not automatically prove the sensor is bad.
- Repair the confirmed fault. This might involve repairing a harness, replacing a sensor, correcting a tire mismatch, fixing a bearing, restoring battery voltage, or calibrating the steering-angle sensor.
- Clear the codes with a compatible scan tool. An engine-code reader may not be able to erase ABS/VSA faults.
- Perform required calibration. Steering-angle or VSA sensor neutral-position procedures may be required after the repair.
- Road-test the Accord. Confirm that the warnings stay off and that no new ABS, brake, steering, or TPMS symptoms appear.
When you should stop driving
Stop driving and arrange professional inspection if the VSA light appears with any of the following:
- ABS or brake-system warning lights
- A soft brake pedal or noticeably increased pedal travel
- Reduced braking performance
- Brake-fluid leakage or a low fluid level
- A steering warning, severe pulling, grinding, or unstable handling
- Brake Hold malfunction or unexpected vehicle movement
If the VSA light is steady by itself and the brakes and steering feel normal, the Accord may retain basic driving capability. Drive cautiously, avoid assuming traction control will intervene, and arrange diagnosis promptly.

Can I drive with the VSA light on in my Honda Accord?
If the VSA light is steady by itself and the brakes and steering feel normal, the Accord may still have basic braking and steering. Will disconnecting the battery reset the VSA light?
It may cause temporary warnings to clear after the vehicle is driven above 12 mph (20 km/h), particularly after a battery replacement. It will not repair a failed sensor, wiring fault, low-voltage problem, or modulator fault. If the light remains, scan the ABS/VSA system rather than disconnecting the battery again.
Can low tire pressure cause the VSA light on an Accord?
Incorrect pressure can contribute to wheel-speed differences, but mismatched tire size, tire type, or tread wear can also affect VSA operation. Set all four tires to the door-jamb specification and verify that they match. A VSA light that remains on needs an ABS/VSA code scan.
Does a basic OBD-II scanner read Honda VSA codes?
Many basic engine-only readers do not access the Accord’s ABS/VSA module. Use Honda’s Diagnostic System or a professional scanner that specifically supports the vehicle’s ABS/VSA system, then record the codes before clearing them.
