The company reports a 74% lower CO₂ footprint for Nordico than leather in the context of its Concept Recharge; that is a Volvo claim about a concept-vehicle material, not an independently established, universal lifecycle result.
Why is Volvo going leather-free?
On September 23, 2021, Volvo Cars announced that all new fully electric Volvo models would be leather-free, beginning with the C40 Recharge. The company tied the policy to animal welfare and to environmental concerns associated with cattle farming, including deforestation. Volvo said it would pursue alternatives while retaining responsibly sourced wool options with supplier traceability and animal-welfare safeguards. Volvo’s 2021 announcement sets out that direction.
Volvo also set historical targets of 25% recycled and bio-based content in new cars by 2025 and a fully circular business by 2040. These were targets, not confirmed outcomes: the sources cited here do not establish whether the 2025 materials target was met. The announcement gives the targets.
What is Volvo Nordico made of?
Volvo’s current US materials page describes Nordico as bio-attributed PVC with a textile backing made from 100% recycled polyester. In its 2021 announcement, Volvo described planned ingredients that included textiles made from recycled materials such as PET bottles, bio-attributed material from sustainable forests in Sweden and Finland, and recycled cork. Those are descriptions from different points in time; they should not be treated as a single unchanged formulation. Leather-free does not mean vegan
Volvo’s current US page says its Tailored Wool Blend is 30% natural wool fiber and 70% recycled polyester. Wool is animal-derived, so a leather-free Volvo interior is not necessarily vegan. The same distinction applies to the materials label: Nordico is described as bio-attributed PVC, not as plastic-free. Volvo’s materials page gives these compositions.
Other C40 materials
In a June 2021 C40 design release, Volvo described an upholstery option containing naturally renewable wool fibers and another combining suede textile made from recycled plastic with micro-tech material. The release also said the carpet was made from 100% recycled PET plastic bottles and that topography trim panels were partly made from recycled plastic. These are C40-specific descriptions; upholstery and trim choices can vary by model and market. Volvo’s C40 design release lists the examples.

Volvo’s current US page also describes woven flax as renewable and says it uses less energy and produces fewer emissions than regular plastic parts. That comparison is Volvo’s stated claim; the cited sources do not provide an independent assessment of it. Volvo’s materials page describes woven flax.
Is Nordico really better for the environment than leather?
Volvo said Nordico in the Concept Recharge had a CO₂ footprint 74% lower than leather. The figure is a manufacturer-reported comparison tied to that concept vehicle. The cited release does not establish that the percentage applies to every production use of Nordico, that the compared materials deliver the same function and durability, or that an independent study confirms the result across lifecycle boundaries. Volvo’s November 17, 2021 Concept Recharge release is the source for the claim.

Volvo’s 2021 announcement also cited an estimate that livestock is responsible for around 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions from human activity, with most coming from cattle farming. That is an estimate about livestock emissions overall, as Volvo presented it—not a figure for leather production or leather interiors specifically. The announcement gives the estimate and its attribution.
A full comparison would need to assess the particular materials across sourcing, manufacturing, use, durability, repair, and end of life, with comparable boundaries and functions. The cited sources describe Volvo’s materials and its footprint claim, but do not settle that broader comparison. As a result, they support Volvo’s stated animal-welfare policy and its specific Nordico claim, not a general conclusion that every leather-free interior has a lower overall environmental impact.

Which Volvo models have leather-free interiors?
Volvo’s 2021 policy announcement named all new fully electric models, starting with the C40 Recharge. It does not, by itself, establish the upholstery available on every current Volvo model in every market. Materials and options can vary by model and geography; the cited composition details are from Volvo’s current US materials page, while the C40 trim details come from a model-specific US release. For a particular vehicle, check its local, model-year materials and equipment information rather than assuming every Volvo uses the same interior.
What Volvo’s evidence establishes

Volvo design chief Robin Page described the company’s approach in its The Rise of Conscious Design report: “We have a vision of where we need to go in the future, with the first step to ensure we harness sustainable, natural, and recycled materials. The next challenge is to change what we do with these materials.” The report contains the statement.
