Both Volkswagen Grand California versions have a separate bathroom. The 600 is the shorter model with a crosswise bed; the longer 680 has lengthwise beds. Volkswagen announced the refresh in stages from 2024 onward, adding cockpit and camper-system updates before later market-specific interior and optional solar-and-lithium equipment. Specifications and availability vary by country and model year.
What changed in the Grand California refresh?
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles presented a broad hardware and software update for the Crafter-based Grand California 600 and 680 at Caravan Salon 2024. The announced changes included a redesigned cockpit, digital instruments, infotainment screens measuring 10.4 or 12.9 inches depending on version, a new camper control panel and expanded driver-assistance equipment. Later announcements added details for particular markets rather than establishing one worldwide specification. For Switzerland, a 2025 announcement described revised cabin finishes and quoted local prices; a later Swiss-market announcement described an optional solar-and-lithium autonomy package. Check the current specification and price list for the country where you intend to buy.
Does the Grand California have a bathroom?
Yes. Volkswagen describes a separate bathroom in the Grand California, equipped with a toilet, shower, folding washbasin, shelves and a cabinet. The bathroom is part of both the 600 and 680 layouts. Volkswagen’s Spain announcement gives approximately 110 litres of fresh-water capacity and 90 litres of wastewater capacity; the New Zealand MY2024 specification sheet lists the same capacities for that market. Volkswagen has described water autonomy of up to four days, but that is not a guaranteed trip length: actual use depends on water consumption and conditions.

The 600 is the more compact choice, while the 680’s extra length enables its lengthwise sleeping arrangement. Sleeping capacity and equipment can vary by market and configuration, so confirm the specific vehicle’s layout before purchase. Cabin and camping-equipment changes
A 2025 Swiss-market announcement listed Atami Bamboo decor for the table and kitchen work surface, a matching PVC floor in the kitchen, dinette and cargo area, black kitchen hardware, storage nets and a mobile dining table that can attach outside at the kitchen block. It also listed an optional fitted set of cab thermal mats and blackout blinds. These are Swiss-market announcement details, not proof that every item is standard or available in every country. Optional solar and lithium battery package
A later Swiss-market announcement describes an optional autonomy package pairing roof-mounted solar panels with LiFePO₄ batteries. Volkswagen lists 110 W of solar for the 600 and 185 W for the 680. It compares 46 Ah of usable capacity with the conventional 92-Ah AGM battery against about 64 Ah with two LiFePO₄ batteries—its basis for describing the increase as almost 40%. Volkswagen also says the lithium batteries offer around five times the cycle life of AGM batteries. These are manufacturer-reported figures, not independent test results; the announcement said the package was orderable in Switzerland at that time. Specifications depend on market and model year
Do not assume a specification from one market applies to another. The 2024 European refresh announcement names a 120 kW (163 PS) diesel and eight-speed automatic, repeated for the Swiss-market 2025 versions. By contrast, Volkswagen’s New Zealand MY2024 sheet lists 130 kW diesel power and 4MOTION all-wheel drive for its locally specified versions. That New Zealand sheet also lists payloads of 699 kg for the 600 and 516 kg for the 680. Those are New Zealand model-year figures, not specifications for the later Swiss-market refresh.
