Volvo XC90 Reliability Over The Years: The Best And Worst Years To Buy

The 2016 XC90 is the year to approach most carefully. For used buyers, 2019–2021 is the strongest general target range, but VIN checks and a Volvo-specific inspection matter more than the model-year label.

The Volvo XC90 has two very different reliability stories. The first-generation SUV, sold from 2003 through 2015, is now an old luxury vehicle whose condition and maintenance history matter more than its badge. The second-generation XC90 arrived for 2016 on Volvo’s new SPA platform, bringing better safety, comfort, and technology—but also the usual risks of a first-year redesign.

For most used buyers, 2019–2021 is the most defensible target range. That is a buying conclusion rather than an official “best year” ranking: these years avoid the 2016 launch model while generally predating the later Google-infotainment recall population. A well-maintained 2017 or 2018 can still be a sensible purchase, while a neglected 2020 can be a very expensive one.

Volvo XC90 generations and major changes

Model years Generation or phase Used-buying significance
2003–2015 First generation, P2 platform Older engineering and age-related repairs are now the main concern.
2016 Second generation, first SPA model Major redesign and first production year; requires especially careful inspection.
2017–2018 Early second generation More mature than 2016, but not free of recalls or software and equipment problems.
2019–2021 Established second-generation models Strongest general target range for a used XC90, provided the individual vehicle checks out.
2022–2025 Later second generation, including Google-built-in systems on certain vehicles Newer vehicles may have better remaining support but still require VIN-specific recall checks.

Worst Volvo XC90 year: 2016 deserves the most caution

The 2016 XC90 is not automatically a bad vehicle, but it is the year I would approach most carefully. Consumer Reports rates it less reliable than other vehicles from the same model year and lists eight NHTSA recalls. CarComplaints also identifies 2016 as the XC90 year with the most overall complaints in its database. That database is useful for spotting patterns, but it is not a government reliability rating and should not be treated as proof that every 2016 vehicle is defective.

The reason for the caution is straightforward: 2016 combined a completely new vehicle with a new platform, new powertrains, extensive electronics, and new safety equipment. Early production vehicles can expose problems that later production and software updates address.

What to investigate on a 2016 XC90

  • Excessive oil consumption: Volvo’s P10186 extended-warranty program covers a specific 2016 XC90 engine population. The bulletin identifies affected VEP4 engines with serial numbers below 1501327; engines above that cutoff were documented as having updated piston rings. This does not mean every 2016 XC90 has the problem.
  • Oil-consumption documentation: The remedy requires an oil-consumption test. Volvo’s procedure calls for the vehicle to return after approximately 620–1,240 miles, or sooner if the low-oil warning illuminates. Existing oil leaks must be repaired before testing, and those leak repairs are not covered by the program.
  • Recall completion: Early vehicles had recalls involving third-row side-curtain airbags, front-seat side-impact-airbag wiring, panoramic-sunroof software, air-conditioning drain routing, front-passenger seat-belt hardware, and an engine coolant bleeder hose that could crack and leak.
  • Electronic systems: Test the center display, cameras, navigation, Bluetooth, driver-assistance features, climate controls, power seats, liftgate, and every warning-light function.

A 2016 can make sense only when its VIN, engine history, recall status, and service records are unusually well documented. A cheap example with no records is not a bargain; it is an unknown repair bill.

Are 2017 and 2018 good XC90 years?

They are better starting points than 2016, but neither should be described as trouble-free. Consumer Reports lists the 2018 XC90 as less reliable than other vehicles from its model year and shows three NHTSA recalls. The 2017 and 2018 model years also had recalls involving connectivity or telematics software, seat-belt components, and other equipment.

Do not assume that a 2017 XC90 is covered by the 2016 oil-consumption program. Volvo’s P10186 bulletin identifies specific 2016 XC90 vehicles and engine serial numbers; it does not establish blanket coverage for all 2017 models. For a 2017 or 2018, confirm the engine configuration and ask a Volvo dealer or qualified independent specialist to check the VIN for applicable campaigns and service history.

Best Volvo XC90 years to buy: 2019–2021

2019, 2020, and 2021 are the most sensible general targets for many used buyers. This range avoids the first year of the SPA XC90 and comes before the later Google-built-in infotainment recall population. Consumer Reports describes the 2020 and 2021 XC90 as about average for reliability in their respective model years.

That does not make these “officially the best” XC90s. Reliability data does not establish one universally superior model year, and model-year averages cannot account for neglect, accident damage, short maintenance intervals, or a vehicle’s powertrain. A documented 2018 can be preferable to an abused 2021.

Important recalls affecting later XC90s

Even the more attractive years require a VIN search. Examples of campaigns affecting portions of the wider XC90 range include:

Vehicle population Issue What the buyer should do
Certain 2019–2022 XC90s Steering-gear assembly issue involving a screw that could fall into the gearbox housing. Confirm the recall remedy was completed.
Certain 2020–2025 plug-in hybrids Brake-control-module software problem that could cause loss of braking in specified downhill coasting conditions while using B mode. Verify the required software update by VIN.
Certain 2015–2024 XC90s Second-row seat-belt buckle and lower-anchor bolts may not have been tightened correctly. Check for an open campaign and completion record.
Certain 2022–2023 plug-in hybrids Engine may fail to start because of an electronic-control-module software error, potentially causing loss of drive power. Confirm the software remedy was performed.
Certain 2023–2025 XC90s with Google-built-in infotainment Rearview-camera image may not display when reverse is selected. Check the VIN, including whether a prior repair under recall 25V282 was superseded by the later remedy in recall 25V908.

Recall campaigns are safety actions, not a complete reliability score. A high recall count does not prove that a vehicle will have frequent mechanical failures, and a vehicle with no open recall can still need repairs covered by neither a recall nor a warranty.

Should you buy a first-generation XC90?

The 2003–2015 XC90 can be appealing because it offers three-row practicality at a low purchase price. The catch is that it is now an older luxury SUV. Suspension components, cooling-system parts, electrical equipment, air-conditioning systems, drivetrain components, and interior mechanisms can all need attention simply because of age and mileage.

There is not enough consistent public reliability data to name one first-generation model year as the definitive best. CarComplaints associates 2004 with the XC90’s most-reported individual complaint—sudden loss of power—and Consumer Reports lists six NHTSA recalls for the 2004 model, including issues involving the fuel-pump flange, tie-rod ball joints, windshield wipers, wheel-speed sensors, and seat-belt attachments. That evidence supports caution around a 2004; it does not prove every 2004 XC90 is unreliable.

Later first-generation examples, such as 2012–2014 vehicles, are sometimes recommended because they are later in the production run. That is a reasonable buyer inference, not a verified year-by-year reliability ranking. Their older design also means they may be less competitive in fuel economy, infotainment, safety technology, and refinement than a second-generation model.

How to check a used XC90 before buying

  1. Run the 17-character VIN through NHTSA.gov/Recalls. You can also search by license plate. Look for unrepaired recalls, not just a seller’s statement that “everything has been done.” Authorized dealers perform recall repairs free of charge.
  2. Get the Volvo service history. Look for oil changes, coolant work, transmission or drivetrain service where applicable, software updates, brake work, and documented recall repairs. Missing records should reduce the price and increase the inspection budget.
  3. Identify the exact powertrain. Confirm whether it is a conventional gasoline model, mild hybrid, or plug-in hybrid. The relevant recalls, maintenance requirements, and diagnostic checks differ.
  4. Inspect for oil and coolant problems. On a 2016, ask specifically about the P10186 oil-consumption test or piston-ring repair when the engine serial number falls within the affected range. Check for low-oil warnings, blue exhaust smoke, coolant odor, leaks, or unexplained fluid loss.
  5. Scan every control module. A basic code reader may not reveal all Volvo-specific faults. Use a Volvo-capable diagnostic scan during a pre-purchase inspection.
  6. Test the electronics methodically. Drive with the camera, parking sensors, adaptive-cruise or other driver-assistance systems, climate control, infotainment, phone connection, heated seats, sunroof, power liftgate, and all displays operating.
  7. Check the chassis and suspension. Listen for knocks over uneven roads, inspect tires for uneven wear, and verify that the vehicle sits level. If equipped with air suspension, check compressor operation, ride-height changes, and overnight sagging.
  8. Operate all three seating rows. Test second-row movement, third-row access, seat belts, child-seat anchors, folding mechanisms, and the rear climate controls.
  9. Pay for an independent inspection. A Volvo specialist can identify leaks, stored faults, worn suspension parts, and deferred maintenance before the purchase becomes your problem.

Which XC90 years should buyers avoid?

The clearest answer is an undocumented 2016, especially one with an unknown engine serial number, no oil-consumption test record, open recalls, or warning lights. That is more precise than saying every 2016 is bad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For first-generation models, be cautious with the oldest and cheapest examples, particularly 2003–2004 vehicles with poor records. The purchase price may be low, but age-related repairs can quickly exceed the difference between a cheap example and a carefully maintained one.

For 2022 and newer models, do not confuse newer age with proven reliability. Confirm software updates and VIN-specific campaigns, particularly on plug-in hybrids and XC90s with Google-built-in infotainment. Recent vehicles may have fewer accumulated complaints simply because they have spent less time on the road.

FAQ

What is the most reliable year for a Volvo XC90?

There is no officially verified single best year. For used buyers, 2019–2021 is the most defensible target range because it avoids the 2016 redesign year and generally predates the later Google-infotainment recall population. Condition, powertrain, records, and VIN-specific recall status still matter more than the year alone.

What year Volvo XC90 should I avoid?

An undocumented 2016 XC90 deserves the most caution because it was the first year of the second-generation redesign and has documented recall, software, and certain-engine oil-consumption concerns. Some 2003–2004 first-generation examples also require caution because of age, recalls, and complaint patterns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do all 2016 Volvo XC90s have bad piston rings?

No. Volvo’s P10186 program applies to a specified 2016 XC90 engine population, including VEP4 engines with serial numbers below 1501327. The vehicle needs an appropriate oil-consumption test and VIN or engine-history verification; the issue should not be generalized to every 2016 XC90.

How do I verify a used XC90’s recalls?

Enter the vehicle’s 17-character VIN or license plate number at NHTSA.gov/Recalls. Then ask a Volvo dealer or qualified specialist to confirm completed campaigns and review service records. A recall search does not replace a mechanical inspection because many repairs and technical-service issues are not recalls.

The Bottom Line

Best general target: a well-maintained 2019–2021 Volvo XC90 with complete records, a clean diagnostic scan, and no unresolved VIN-specific recalls.

Approach carefully: 2016, especially without proof of the required oil-consumption work or updated engine components. 2017–2018 can be worthwhile but still need a full history. First-generation models can be affordable, but their age makes condition more important than any “best year” list.
