The Infinite Machine Olto looks like an e-bike only until you try to move it. With a 176-pound curb weight, a 750-watt rear hub motor, hydraulic disc brakes, a fixed two-person seat and a 28-mph top speed, it sits somewhere between a cargo bicycle, electric scooter and lightweight moped.
That unusual combination is the point. Infinite Machine designed the Olto for short urban trips with a passenger, while retaining pedals, removable-battery charging and—at least in its U.S. marketing—bike-lane compatibility. The important qualification is that the legal classification depends on where it is ridden.

What is the Infinite Machine Olto?
The Olto is a small electric two-wheeler from New York-based Infinite Machine. The company describes it as a vehicle “built for the bike lane,” but it is not shaped like a conventional bicycle. Its proportions are closer to a compact scooter or Vespa-sized moped, and its weight is several times that of a typical lightweight e-bike.

The capacity figure matters because the Olto is designed to carry a passenger, but it is not a license to load the rear seat with unlimited weight. Rider, passenger, bags and accessories all count toward the total.
Pedals, throttle and the bike-versus-moped problem
The Olto’s pedals do not work exactly like the pedals on a normal bicycle. They can provide pedal assistance, or they can be locked as footrests when the rider uses the throttle. That makes the vehicle usable without continuous pedaling, but it also exposes the compromise in the design.
Reviewers generally found the pedal-assist position less natural than the riding position on a standard bicycle and preferred the throttle. The fixed seat and fixed handlebars also limit adjustment. A rider who does not fit the Olto’s single seating position cannot correct that with a quick saddle or stem adjustment.

Legally, “e-bike” is not a universal classification. The current U.S. product page presents the Olto as a Class 2/Class 3 bike-lane vehicle, while the European specification calls it an L1e-B electric moped. In Europe, the listed top speed is 45 km/h, or about 28 mph, with a claimed 65-km range at 25 km/h.
New York City illustrates why buyers need to check local rules rather than rely on the marketing label. The city’s rules distinguish e-bikes from mopeds: Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes do not require the same license, registration, plate and VIN requirements listed for mopeds, while mopeds cannot use bike lanes. New York City also limits e-bikes, e-scooters and pedal-assist bicycles to 15 mph, regardless of a vehicle’s higher technical capability.
In other words, the Olto should not be described as automatically license-free or legal in every bike lane. Confirm the rules for the exact city and state before purchase.
What range can you realistically expect?
Infinite Machine advertises 40 miles for the U.S. Olto, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than a guaranteed distance in normal mixed riding. Independent tests have reported roughly 25 to 30 miles in one case, while another 18-mile ride ended with 8 percent battery remaining.

Speed, hills, temperature, tire pressure, rider weight and passenger load will all change the result. Carrying two people is particularly relevant: one review covered roughly nine miles with a passenger and returned with about 62 percent battery remaining, but that is not enough data to establish a separate two-rider range figure.
The battery is removable, which is a practical advantage for apartment dwellers or anyone without an outdoor charging point. The pack weighs about 20 pounds, so carrying it indoors is manageable even though carrying the complete vehicle upstairs is not. Infinite Machine also sells a charging dock for the removable battery.
Charging time
The published European technical figures list approximately 5.5 hours using the basic 6-amp charger and about 3 hours with the 14-amp fast charger. The U.S. accessory listing describes the optional Super Charger as reaching 80 percent in approximately 1.5 hours and a full charge in roughly 3 hours.
Those numbers make the removable pack more useful for daily urban commuting than the Olto’s size might initially suggest. The trade-off is that a second battery would be expensive and adds another roughly 20-pound object to store and charge; Infinite Machine’s published information does not make a second-pack strategy the central use case.
Security and connected features
The Olto has a more elaborate security system than many e-bikes. Unlocking can use an NFC card, the companion app or Bluetooth proximity. The system also supports GPS tracking, remote vehicle control, an alarm, automatic motor locking and automatic steering locking.
A separate internal 12-volt backup battery keeps the alarm and GPS operating after the main removable battery has been taken out. That does not make the vehicle permanently trackable: testing found that if the Olto is left unattended until the backup battery is depleted, location tracking stops.
Those features are useful in a city, but they are not a substitute for physical security. The Olto remains a 176-pound vehicle that should be locked to an appropriate fixed object whenever it is parked outside.

How practical is two-up riding?
Passenger capability is one of the Olto’s strongest distinctions from ordinary e-bikes. A parent can use the optional Kid Carrier, or an adult passenger can sit behind the rider and place their feet on the built-in pegs. The fixed, broad seat is more immediately passenger-friendly than a typical bicycle saddle.
There are compromises. The passenger does not get a backrest, and testing found that the rear foot pegs could slide somewhat. A passenger may feel as if they could slide off the back, especially under hard acceleration, braking or a poorly chosen riding position. Passenger use therefore requires smoother inputs and more attention than the marketing photos might imply.
The extra weight also affects acceleration, braking, handling and range. Although the hydraulic brakes and suspension are appropriate for a substantial urban vehicle, the Olto should be ridden conservatively with two people, particularly on wet pavement or rough bike-lane surfaces.
Who is the Olto for?
The Olto makes the most sense for an urban buyer who wants a compact electric vehicle that can carry an occasional passenger, has indoor-removable battery charging and does not want a full-size motorcycle. It could replace some car trips, especially short journeys where parking is difficult.
It is less convincing as a grab-and-carry bicycle. At 176 pounds with its battery, it is not something most owners will routinely lift up stairs, place on a standard car rack or wheel through a narrow apartment hallway. Its fixed riding position also makes a test ride more important than it would be with a conventional adjustable bicycle.
For buyers expecting a normal e-bike, the price and mass are significant. For buyers comparing it with a scooter or small moped, the passenger seat, removable battery and connected security features become more relevant. The right comparison is therefore not a lightweight pedal bike; it is a compact electric runabout with bicycle-oriented U.S. positioning.

Its weaknesses are just as concrete: substantial weight, limited rider adjustability, uncertain real-world range with a passenger, an exposed rear seating position and legal rules that vary by location. Treat the 40-mile figure as a best-case claim, verify whether your local regulations allow its use where you intend to ride, and test the seating position before buying.
