5 Of The Best Budget Electric Scooters In 2024

These five scooters were budget standouts in 2024, but real-world range, hill performance, changing prices, and a serious Swagtron recall change how they should be judged today.

The five scooters below were budget standouts in 2024, but this is a historical list rather than a current buying guide. Prices in the original comparison were observed on April 20, 2024, and scooter availability changes quickly. More importantly, one model—the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost—was recalled in 2025 because of a fire hazard and should not be purchased.

Range numbers also need context. Manufacturer figures assume favorable conditions, while independent testing commonly produced results 20% to 50% lower. Rider weight, hills, temperature, tire pressure, speed, and stop-and-go traffic all matter, especially if you are choosing a scooter for the first or last mile of a car commute.

1. Segway Ninebot KickScooter F30

The F30 was the sensible all-rounder in this group. Its 350-watt motor, 10-inch pneumatic tires, 15.5-mph claimed top speed, and 15% maximum slope rating made it more versatile than many ultra-cheap scooters. It also folds and weighs approximately 33.3 pounds, which is manageable for loading into a vehicle but not especially light for carrying up several flights of stairs.

Segway claims up to 18.6 miles of range and lists an approximate five-hour charging time. Wirecutter testing cited in the original comparison produced approximately 10 miles, so a realistic owner should leave a meaningful buffer rather than plan an 18-mile round trip. Pneumatic tires can also provide a more forgiving ride over rough pavement than solid tires, but they require attention to air pressure and can suffer punctures.

The F30’s documentation contains a payload discrepancy: Segway support lists 66 to 265 pounds, while the product page lists 66 to 220 pounds. Check the documentation for the exact regional version before relying on the higher figure. The F30 is an older model, and its 2024 price of $399.99 should not be treated as a current price.

2. Hiboy S2

The Hiboy S2 offered a higher claimed speed than the F30 at a similar general price point. Its motor is rated at 350 watts with a 500-watt peak, and the scooter includes electronic and regenerative braking alongside a disc brake. Front, rear, and side LEDs are useful when riding around parked cars or approaching intersections, although they do not replace proper reflective gear or a front light suitable for poorly lit roads.

Hiboy claims 17 miles of range from the 36-volt, 7.5-Ah battery. Tom’s Guide obtained roughly 10 miles in mixed-terrain testing. Its more serious weakness appeared on hills: on a 6% incline, the S2 slowed to approximately 3 to 4 mph. That makes it a poor choice for heavier riders or routes with sustained climbs, even if the flat-road specifications look attractive.

The 8.5-inch honeycomb tires resist punctures but transmit more impact from cracks and potholes than pneumatic tires. Tom’s Guide also found the rear folding latch somewhat fussy. Hiboy’s currently listed configuration includes rear suspension, but buyers should confirm that the specific version and model year they receive has the same hardware. The manufacturer’s displayed price was $352.99 at the time of research, reduced from a displayed $599.99 regular price; sale pricing and availability can change.

3. Razor E Prime III

The Razor E Prime III’s defining advantage is its 24-pound weight. If a scooter must be lifted into a sedan trunk, carried through an office, or combined with a train journey, that difference matters more than a few extra miles of advertised range.

Razor lists a 250-watt motor, an 18-mph top speed, a 15-mile range, and a maximum recommended rider weight of 220 pounds. It uses an 8-inch pneumatic front tire and an 8-inch airless rear tire. The mixed tire setup gives some cushioning without making both wheels vulnerable to punctures, though the small wheels still demand care around potholes and broken pavement.

GearLab measured 8.2 miles of effective range, approximately 18.4 mph at maximum speed, and a six-hour recharge time. It also found that the scooter struggled on steep hills and lost speed as the battery discharged. In practical terms, this is a short, mostly flat commute scooter—not a strong choice for a hilly route or a rider who needs dependable range at the end of the day. Razor’s current product page lists a $599.99 MSRP, which may make the E Prime III less compelling unless discounted.

4. GOTRAX G4

The G4 was the performance-oriented option among these budget models. Its 500-watt motor, 10-inch pneumatic tires, folding frame, and built-in cable lock give it a more substantial commuter feel than the lightweight Razor. GOTRAX claims up to 25 miles of range and a 20-mph top speed.

GearLab’s testing was relatively close to the range claim, measuring approximately 22 miles and 19.82 mph. That does not make 25 miles a guaranteed planning figure, but it gives the G4 the strongest tested range in this group. GearLab recorded roughly five hours and 50 minutes for a full charge, longer than the manufacturer’s four- to five-hour estimate.

The tradeoff is portability. At approximately 37.8 pounds, the G4 is heavy to carry regularly. It handled a 10.5% grade but slowed to approximately 5 to 6 mph, and it could not climb a 15% grade. The built-in cable lock is convenient for a brief stop but can be cut; use a hardened external lock when leaving the scooter unattended.

5. Swagtron Swagger 5: historical pick only

The Swagger 5 appeared in the 2024 budget comparison because it offered an 18-mph claimed top speed, 11-mile claimed range, 300-watt motor, 8.5-inch honeycomb tires, cruise control, lights, a bell, and a rear mechanical disc brake. Its claimed charging time was approximately 3.5 hours.

That information is now superseded by a safety recall. On February 20, 2025, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a Walmart recall covering approximately 17,970 Swagtron SG-5 Boost commuter scooters. The affected lithium-ion batteries can overheat, smoke, melt, or ignite. Recalled model numbers include SWGR5-V2-SLV, SWGR5-V2-2, SG5 Boost, SG-5S, 96262-2, 96262-9, and 96560-2. The scooters were sold at Walmart and Sam’s Club from May 2018 through October 2024 for approximately $175 to $450.

If you own one, stop riding and charging it immediately. Follow the CPSC and Walmart recall instructions for identification, disposal, and a refund. Do not buy an SG-5 Boost simply because it is cheap, and do not treat a used listing as safe because the scooter appears functional.

What to check before buying a budget scooter

  1. Calculate usable range. Treat the advertised figure as an optimistic ceiling. For a daily commute, leave enough battery for weather, hills, cold temperatures, and a detour.
  2. Measure the carrying weight. A 24-pound scooter is materially easier to load than a 38-pound model. Include stairs, parking garages, and the height of your vehicle’s trunk in the decision.
  3. Match tires to the road. Pneumatic tires generally soften rough pavement but can puncture. Honeycomb or airless tires reduce puncture worries but usually produce more vibration.
  4. Check the route’s grades. A claimed maximum slope is not the same as a comfortable climbing ability. Independent testing of the Hiboy S2 and G4 showed substantial speed loss on hills.
  5. Verify the exact model and recall status. Older scooter names can cover multiple revisions. Check the serial or model number, manufacturer documentation, and CPSC recall database before buying used.
  6. Budget for security and safety equipment. A quality external lock, helmet, front and rear visibility, and tire-pressure maintenance are not optional extras for regular road use.

Are these still the best budget scooters?

They were defensible 2024 recommendations based on reviews from Wirecutter, Tom’s Guide, CNET, and GearLab, but the category has moved on. Tom’s Guide later replaced the Hiboy S2 as its budget favorite with the NIU KQi 100P. That does not erase the test results above; it means a 2024 list should not be mistaken for a current market ranking. Before purchasing, compare newer models, verify replacement-parts support, and check live pricing rather than relying on the prices attached to the original article.

FAQ

Which of these budget scooters has the longest tested range?

The GOTRAX G4 produced the strongest independent result, at approximately 22 miles in GearLab testing. That is still a test result, not a guaranteed distance for every rider or route.

Which scooter is easiest to carry?

The Razor E Prime III, at approximately 24 pounds, is the clear lightweight choice. The Segway F30 weighs about 33.3 pounds, while the GOTRAX G4 weighs about 37.8 pounds.

Is the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost safe to buy used?

Do not buy an affected SG-5 Boost. The CPSC recalled approximately 17,970 units in February 2025 because their lithium-ion batteries can overheat, smoke, melt, or ignite. Stop using and charging a recalled unit and follow the official refund and disposal instructions.

Are advertised electric-scooter range figures realistic?

Usually not as a planning guarantee. Independent testing often finds 20% to 50% less range than manufacturer claims. Rider weight, hills, speed, temperature, tire pressure, and frequent stops can reduce range further.

The Bottom Line

For this 2024 group, the Razor E Prime III made the most sense when low weight was the priority, while the GOTRAX G4 offered the best tested range if carrying nearly 38 pounds was acceptable. The Segway F30 was the balanced older option, and the Hiboy S2 was best limited to short, flatter trips. Exclude the Swagtron SG-5 Boost from any current shopping list because of its battery-fire recall. Since both prices and model availability have changed, check current listings, exact model numbers, independent tests, and recall notices before putting a scooter in your car or on the road.
