For a US buyer shopping for a new sedan, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the practical choice because Volvo Car USA says the S90 is no longer available new in the United States. The realistic Volvo alternative is a used or Certified by Volvo S90, while the E-Class offers several current powertrains, prices and performance levels. The right answer depends first on whether you need a new car, then on model year, trim, drivetrain, technology priorities and how much performance you are prepared to pay for.
Start with availability: this is not a like-for-like new-car comparison in the US
Volvo Car USA’s current S90 page states, “The S90 is no longer available as a new vehicle in the US.” It directs shoppers toward Certified by Volvo pre-owned vehicles instead. That changes the buying decision before price, horsepower or equipment enter the discussion: a US shopper cannot configure and order a new S90 through Volvo’s current US lineup, but can shop remaining used inventory.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class remains an active new-car line in the US. Mercedes-Benz USA lists the E 350 Sedan, E 350 4MATIC Sedan, E 450 4MATIC Sedan and AMG E 53 HYBRID Sedan. Prices and equipment can change, so verify the model year, destination charge, options, location and dealer price before signing a purchase order.

Current E-Class choices and the price-performance ladder
Mercedes-Benz USA’s page, accessed October 13, 2026, gives the following starting prices and factory performance figures:

These are manufacturer starting figures, not guaranteed transaction prices. Destination, taxes, registration, dealer charges, options and financing are separate. The AMG’s 577-hp and 553-lb-ft figures are combined outputs, and its electric range is an “up to” claim; actual range depends on temperature, speed, traffic, terrain, charge level and equipment.
What the E 350 is for
The E 350 is the entry point into the current E-Class. Its 255 hp and quoted 6.1-second 0–60-mph time suit buyers who want a traditional executive sedan without paying for the higher-output versions. The E 350 4MATIC costs $2,500 more at the listed starting prices and retains the same published power and acceleration figures while adding all-wheel drive.

What the E 450 adds
The E 450 4MATIC raises output to 375 hp and 369 lb-ft and cuts the quoted 0–60-mph time to 4.4 seconds. Its $73,700 starting price is $8,500 above the E 350 Sedan and $6,000 above the E 350 4MATIC. That premium buys a distinctly quicker powertrain, not merely an equipment package.
Who should consider the AMG E 53 HYBRID
The AMG E 53 HYBRID is a different proposition from a standard E-Class. At $91,100 before additional charges and options, it is $25,900 above the E 450 4MATIC and $25,900 above the E 350 4MATIC. Mercedes quotes 577 hp combined, 553 lb-ft combined and 3.9 seconds to 60 mph, plus up to 43 miles of electric driving. It makes sense only if that performance and the ability to drive some trips electrically justify the higher purchase price and the need to charge regularly.

What a used S90 offers
The US-market S90 page is labeled “S90 Gas (mild hybrid).” Volvo describes a 48-volt battery system that recovers braking energy. This is a mild-hybrid system, not a plug-in powertrain with a stated electric-only range. Exact engine, horsepower, drivetrain, fuel economy and equipment depend on the S90 model year and trim you find.
Volvo highlights Google built-in services, including Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play, along with Apple CarPlay. Other named equipment includes an air purifier, Bowers & Wilkins audio, blind-spot information, a 360-degree camera and driver-assistance technology. On a used car, confirm that the specific vehicle actually has each feature; equipment can vary by year, package and market.

Volvo also says digital-services access and data are included for up to four years, after which service can be extended by subscription. Ask the seller for the original delivery date and check the account or vehicle screen to determine how much included time remains. Do not assume a used S90 has a full, current subscription simply because the car supports Google built-in.
Because the S90 is no longer a new US model, your shopping process is an inventory search rather than a factory-order comparison. Certified by Volvo pre-owned S90s may provide a more structured inspection and warranty than an unrelated used listing, but coverage, eligibility and price must be checked on the individual vehicle.
Price comparisons need model-year and trim labels
Third-party comparison pages do not pair the same model years. TrueCar’s September 2026 comparison identifies a 2025 Volvo S90 and a 2027 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It lists $59,495 for the S90 and $66,650 for the E-Class, plus 23 city/31 highway mpg for the S90 and 25 city/33 highway mpg for the E-Class. Those figures describe the selected vehicles on that page; they are not a universal new-car comparison and should not be treated as a quote for every trim.

Cars.com likewise displays a 2025 S90 against a 2027 E-Class and shows a $58,300 S90 starting MSRP versus $65,200 for the E-Class. The page’s trims and dates must be checked before using those numbers for a purchase decision. A used S90’s asking price is also affected by mileage, condition, accident history, certification, location and options, none of which can be inferred from an old MSRP.

These pages do not establish which sedan costs less to own. Fuel, insurance, maintenance, tires, financing, depreciation and taxes can outweigh a difference in asking price, especially when comparing a used S90 with a new E-Class.
Powertrain and efficiency: compare the exact cars, not the badges
The E-Class range spans a 255-hp mild-hybrid-style entry model, a 375-hp E 450 and a 577-hp combined-output plug-in AMG. Calling “the E-Class” faster or more efficient without naming the version is therefore misleading.
The S90’s 48-volt system recovers braking energy, but the supplied Volvo description does not provide one universal horsepower, torque or EPA figure for every S90 year and trim. Obtain the window sticker or official specification for the used car you are considering. Verify whether it is front- or all-wheel drive, which engine it has, and whether its fuel-economy rating applies to that drivetrain.
TrueCar’s 25/33-mpg E-Class and 23/31-mpg S90 figures are associated with its 2027 and 2025 selections, respectively. They are not evidence that every E-Class beats every S90, nor that the two cars were tested under identical conditions. Use official EPA figures for the same model year, body style, engine and drivetrain when calculating fuel cost.

- Available or highlighted air-purification equipment.
- Bowers & Wilkins audio on equipped vehicles.
- Blind-spot information and a 360-degree camera on equipped vehicles.
- Driver-assistance technology whose exact functions depend on model year and trim.
For a used S90, test every screen, camera view, phone connection and audio channel. Confirm that navigation data, user accounts and subscription status can be transferred or reset. A feature listed on a model page may have been optional on the car in front of you.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class
- Third-generation MBUX infotainment.
- Routines and apps.
- Fingerprint and facial recognition features.
- Digital vehicle key capability.
- Driver-assistance technology and a center air bag, subject to equipment and market configuration.
Ask for the build sheet or window sticker to identify optional packages. During a test drive, pair your phone, check display visibility, try the voice assistant and verify that the driver-assistance settings are understandable rather than assuming every advertised function is standard.

Both manufacturers describe substantial active-safety equipment, but the available material does not provide a method-matched, same-model-year independent crash-test comparison. Volvo’s named blind-spot, camera and assistance features do not prove that the S90 is safer than the E-Class. Mercedes-Benz explicitly warns that some assistance systems may not prevent a collision and that the driver remains responsible for paying attention.
Before buying, look up independent ratings for the exact model year and body style from the relevant testing organizations, then check whether the tested vehicle’s equipment matches the car you are purchasing. Treat a feature list as information about available technology, not as an overall safety ranking.

Choose the E-Class if you need a new US-market sedan
The E-Class is the only readily available new-car choice in this matchup for a US shopper. You can select rear-wheel drive or 4MATIC in the E 350 range, step up to the quicker E 450, or choose the AMG plug-in hybrid for maximum output and short electric trips.

Choose a used S90 if Volvo’s design and interface matter more than buying new
A used S90 can make sense for someone who specifically wants its understated cabin, Google-based interface, Volvo equipment or a certified used-car route. The trade-off is that condition, remaining digital-service access, warranty coverage and equipment must be evaluated car by car.
Choose the E 350 4MATIC when traction is the priority
The E 350 4MATIC carries a listed $67,700 starting price, $2,500 above the rear-drive E 350, with the same published 255 hp, 295 lb-ft and 6.1-second 0–60-mph time. Confirm that the added drivetrain capability is useful in your climate and that its extra purchase and operating costs fit your budget.
Choose the E 450 for strong acceleration without AMG pricing
The E 450 4MATIC’s 4.4-second quoted 0–60-mph time and 375 hp place it between the E 350 and AMG E 53 HYBRID. It is the performance-oriented middle ground in the current lineup.

The AMG combines the highest listed output with up to 43 miles of electric driving. Its higher price and plug-in complexity are easier to justify if you have reliable charging and many daily trips within the stated electric range. If you cannot charge regularly, compare its fuel and ownership rationale with the non-plug-in versions before paying the premium.
A practical buying process
- Set the market and condition. Decide whether you are shopping for a new E-Class, a used S90, or an S90 in a non-US market where new inventory remains.
- Write down exact vehicles. Record model year, trim, engine, drivetrain, mileage and equipment for each candidate.
- Verify the price basis. Separate MSRP or asking price from destination, taxes, registration, options, dealer fees, financing and trade-in assumptions.
- Check official specifications. Confirm horsepower, torque, EPA fuel economy, warranty and included equipment for that exact VIN or window sticker.
- Inspect technology. Test navigation, phone pairing, cameras, audio, voice controls, digital keys and driver-assistance settings.
- Review the used-car record. Obtain a vehicle-history report, maintenance records, recall completion and an independent inspection for any used S90.
- Confirm service access. Ask Volvo about remaining digital-services access and ask Mercedes about connected-service terms and activation requirements.
- Calculate your own annual cost. Use your mileage, local fuel or electricity prices, insurance quote, tires, maintenance estimate and expected ownership period.
- Get comparable written offers. Compare out-the-door totals, not monthly payments or headline starting prices.
What remains unanswered before you declare a winner
The available specifications do not establish a reliable overall winner for independent crash performance, long-term reliability, maintenance expense, insurance, depreciation or total cost of ownership. Those outcomes vary with model year, powertrain, mileage, location, driver, repair history and coverage. A responsible decision therefore stops short of calling either badge universally safer, more reliable or cheaper to own.
For a US buyer who wants a factory-new luxury sedan now, the E-Class wins on availability by default. For a buyer who is comfortable with pre-owned inventory and finds a well-documented S90 at the right price, the Volvo remains a credible alternative. Make the final choice only after matching year, trim, equipment and ownership costs on the specific cars in front of you.
