Short answer: The Volvo EX60 appears to be the comfort-led choice in the available road-trip review, with supportive seats and a bright, relaxing cabin. The BMW iX3 is also comfortable but is described as more engaging and dynamically focused. For safety, the BMW has the stronger documented position: Euro NCAP awarded the 2026 iX3 50 xDrive five stars, while the September 2026 comparison reviewed here said the EX60 had not yet been tested by Euro NCAP.
That is an evidence advantage, not proof that the BMW is intrinsically safer. Volvo describes substantial EX60 safety hardware and software, but those claims are not a substitute for a comparable independent crash assessment. Your decision should therefore combine the evidence with an identical-trim test drive, because wheel size, suspension, drivetrain, road surface and occupant preference can change how either SUV feels.

What this comparison can—and cannot—establish
The two SUVs answer different parts of the premium-electric-SUV brief. The EX60 is presented as a comfort-oriented Volvo with a safety system built around sensing, software and a multi-adaptive safety belt. The iX3 combines a premium cabin with sharper handling, and its iX3 50 xDrive has a published Euro NCAP result. Those are not equivalent types of evidence: one is a manufacturer’s description of engineering, the other is an independent assessment of a specific variant.

The most defensible conclusion is narrow. A TechRadar road-trip account found the Volvo more comfort-focused and the BMW more dynamic while calling both comfortable. Euro NCAP’s 2026 result gives the BMW the better-documented safety case in the material available for this comparison. It does not rank the BMW above the Volvo in every real-world crash scenario, and it does not tell you how every iX3 or EX60 trim will ride.

Specifications also need discipline. Volvo’s range figure is for an EX60 all-wheel-drive configuration and is labelled preliminary. BMW’s figures come from a German-market release, differ between iX3 40 and iX3 50 xDrive, and are also preliminary. Neither set should be treated as a universal promise for every country, wheel, battery, software version or driving condition.
Comfort: the EX60 has the clearer road-test advantage
Ride character
The published road-trip driver described the EX60 as less interested in sporty traits and more willing to prioritise comfort. That usually means a suspension tune intended to smooth long motorway sections, broken urban streets and expansion joints rather than maximise cornering response. The same account characterised the iX3 as more dynamically focused: its body control and steering engagement were part of the appeal, even though the car remained comfortable.
This is an attributed impression, not an instrumented ride test. The review did not isolate identical suspension packages, wheel diameters, tyre types, passenger loads, routes or weather. A car on large wheels can feel noticeably firmer than the same model on smaller wheels, and an adaptive suspension setting can change the balance between isolation and control. If you value a calm ride, compare the versions you would actually order rather than relying on a review of a different specification.

The reviewer specifically praised the EX60’s supportive seats and bright cabin. Seat support matters on a long journey in ways a range figure cannot show: the cushion angle, lumbar adjustment, shoulder support and ease of finding a relaxed driving position all influence fatigue. A brighter interior can also make the cabin feel more open, although perceived spaciousness depends on roof lining, glass area, trim colour and seating position.
The BMW was described as premium-feeling and comfortable, but its stronger dynamic character may suit drivers who want more feedback through bends. That is not a quality defect. Some buyers prefer a vehicle that settles quietly over rough surfaces; others accept a little more firmness in exchange for a more immediate steering response. Neither preference can be settled from a specification sheet.

What to check in person
- Drive both vehicles over the same potholes, patched asphalt, speed humps and smooth dual-carriageway section.
- Try the front seats for at least 20 minutes, adjusting lumbar support, cushion extension and steering reach.
- Listen for tyre and wind noise at the speed you normally travel; cabin quietness can vary with wheel and tyre choice.
- Test the rear seats behind your preferred driving position, including headroom, knee room and access for child seats.
- Repeat the route in the exact trim and wheel size you are considering. A different demonstrator may not reproduce the ride you will buy.

What Euro NCAP awarded the 2026 iX3
Euro NCAP gave the BMW iX3 50 xDrive a five-star rating in 2026. The published category results were:

A five-star headline should therefore be read alongside the category percentages and comments, not as a guarantee that every assistance system performs perfectly in every situation.

It should not automatically be generalised to the iX3 40, another drivetrain, a different model year or a market with different standard equipment. Check the current Euro NCAP record and the equipment list for the vehicle sold where you live.
Why there is no fair EX60 star comparison yet
The September 2026 comparison used for this article reported that the EX60 had not yet been tested by Euro NCAP. That is a status report tied to that date; a later result could change the comparison. Until an equivalent test is published, the two SUVs do not have matched independent crash evidence.
This distinction matters. Saying that BMW is “safer” would go beyond the evidence. The supported statement is that BMW has a five-star independent result for one iX3 variant, while the reviewed sources did not provide an EX60 Euro NCAP rating. Buyers who require a comparable laboratory assessment should check Euro NCAP again immediately before ordering.

What Volvo says about EX60 safety technology
Volvo’s EX60 launch material describes a body structure, exterior and interior sensing, software intended to support safety, and a multi-adaptive safety belt. The belt is presented as able to adapt its behaviour to information about the occupant and crash situation. These are Volvo’s descriptions of its design and intended operation; they are not independently verified comparative scores.
Volvo Cars chief technology officer Anders Bell said: “With our new electric vehicle architecture, we directly address the main worries that customers have when considering a switch to a fully electric car.” The statement explains Volvo’s objective for the architecture. It does not establish that the EX60 protects occupants better than the iX3, nor does it replace a published crash-test result.
When comparing safety equipment, ask the dealer to identify which functions are standard, optional or restricted to a particular market. Software updates, camera and radar fitment, warning thresholds and driver-monitoring features can differ by region and production date. Confirm that the demonstrator and the ordered car have the same safety package.
Range and charging figures are variant- and market-specific
The headline numbers look close enough to invite a direct contest, but they describe different vehicles and conditions. The following figures are the manufacturers’ preliminary WLTP claims, not a single controlled test.

WLTP is a standardised laboratory procedure useful for comparing vehicles tested under the same method, but it is not a guaranteed motorway distance. Cold weather, high speeds, roof loads, hills, wet roads, winter tyres and cabin heating can reduce the distance between charges. A ten-minute charging claim also assumes a charger capable of delivering the stated power and a battery at a suitable temperature and state of charge. Your local public-charging network may become the practical constraint.

Germany-specific price and availability
BMW’s Germany release said the iX3 40 was planned for German availability from summer 2026 at €63,400. That is a dated manufacturer statement for Germany, not a current price for every buyer. Taxes, incentives, options, delivery charges and local specifications can change the amount substantially. The EX60’s launch figures in the material reviewed do not provide a universal purchase price.
How trim, wheels and drivetrain can change the answer
Match like with like
Do not compare an EX60 AWD headline with an iX3 40 rear-drive figure and call one model inherently more efficient. Drivetrain, battery capacity, motor output and software calibration all affect energy use. If your shortlist includes the iX3 50 xDrive, use that variant when considering the Euro NCAP result; if you are considering the iX3 40, verify what safety equipment and testing coverage apply to it.
Check suspension and wheel equipment
Wheel diameter and tyre sidewall influence impact harshness, steering response and road noise. Adaptive dampers, if fitted, can alter the ride between comfort and sport settings. Ask for the exact wheel, tyre and suspension codes on the order sheet. A comfort judgement made in a well-equipped demonstrator may not transfer to a less expensive or more heavily optioned car.
Confirm the local specification
Equipment described in a German release or a global launch announcement may not be standard in your country. Obtain a written list of airbags, emergency braking functions, lane-support features, driver monitoring, charging hardware and software-update policy for your market. Also confirm delivery timing: an announced model or trim can be unavailable, delayed or replaced before registration.

- Prepare an identical brief. Tell both dealers that you are comparing a specific drivetrain, wheel size and seating configuration. Record the equipment shown on each vehicle.
- Set the driving position. Adjust seat, steering wheel and mirrors from scratch. Note how easily you can obtain lumbar and thigh support, and whether controls can be operated without hunting through menus.
- Drive a rough urban section. Cross patched surfaces, drains and speed humps at normal speeds. Pay attention to sharp impacts, secondary bouncing and seat movement rather than judging a single bump.
- Drive a smooth, faster section. Evaluate wind noise, tyre roar, straight-line stability and how tiring the vehicle feels after 15 to 20 minutes.
- Use a bend or roundabout. Notice steering weight, body roll and how quickly the car responds. Decide whether the BMW’s dynamic emphasis is a benefit or whether the Volvo’s calmer response suits you better.
- Test the assistance systems safely. Review the settings while stationary, then observe warnings and lane support on a clearly marked road. Do not provoke emergency braking or remove your attention from traffic.
- Inspect family practicality. Install a child seat if relevant, sit behind your normal driving position and check boot access, charging-cable storage and visibility.
- Ask charging questions. Confirm the battery usable capacity, AC and DC limits, pre-conditioning behaviour, connector type, cable supplied and the conditions behind any ten-minute charging claim.
- Repeat with the preferred mode. If the car has comfort, adaptive or sport settings, drive the same route in the setting you would normally use. Record which mode was active.
This process cannot create a scientific comfort score, but it removes avoidable differences between the two demonstrations and exposes the variables most likely to affect daily use.
Which SUV fits which buyer?
The EX60 is the more plausible fit when comfort is your first filter
- You prefer the softer, less sporty character described in the road-trip account.
- Supportive seats and a bright cabin are more important to you than sharper cornering response.
- You are prepared to wait for or verify an independent EX60 safety assessment rather than choosing on a matched star rating today.
- The EX60 specification available in your market provides the range, charging access and equipment your regular routes require.
That choice should still be validated on the roads you use. The comfort evidence comes from one journalist’s experience, not a population survey or controlled comparison.
The iX3 is the more defensible fit when documented testing and driving involvement matter
- You want an independently assessed five-star result for the iX3 50 xDrive, with the published category scores available for scrutiny.
- You enjoy more responsive handling and a premium-feeling cabin without giving up basic ride comfort.
- The exact iX3 variant, safety equipment and market specification have been confirmed, rather than inferred from the 50 xDrive test.
- The German-market range, charging and price information is being treated as reference data, not as a promise for your country.
When neither headline verdict is enough
If you carry passengers who are sensitive to motion, regularly drive poor roads or depend on public fast charging, schedule extended demonstrations and inspect the local charging network before choosing. If independent safety certification is non-negotiable, delay a final decision until the relevant Euro NCAP status for the exact model and market is available. If comfort is subjective but safety equipment is fixed, prioritise a matching specification and a written feature list over a generic model reputation.
Checks to complete before signing an order
- Verify the latest Euro NCAP status for the exact EX60 and iX3 variant.
- Confirm whether the quoted range is WLTP, preliminary, and tied to a particular drivetrain, battery, wheel or market.
- Get the maximum AC and DC charging rates in writing, including the conditions behind any “kilometres added in ten minutes” claim.
- Check standard and optional safety equipment, including emergency braking, lane support, driver monitoring and physical controls.
- Confirm suspension, wheel and tyre specification because these can materially affect ride comfort.
- Obtain the current local price, incentives, taxes, delivery date and warranty terms; the €63,400 German iX3 40 figure is not a universal price.
- Drive both cars back to back on a route that includes the surfaces you normally encounter.
On the evidence available for this comparison, the EX60 is the more comfort-oriented prospect, while the BMW iX3 50 xDrive is the better-documented safety choice because it has a published five-star Euro NCAP result. Treat both conclusions as conditional: one is based on an attributed road-test impression, the other on a test of a specific BMW variant, and neither replaces checking the exact car available to you.
