Volvo Cars’ first V8 was a 4.4-liter engine introduced in the XC90 and later fitted to the S80 sedan. Volvo’s factory specification identifies it as the B8444S, with a listed displacement of 4,414 cm³. Volvo’s reviewed factory materials document those two model lines; they do not by themselves establish that the engine was the only V8 ever used in every Volvo-branded vehicle or special application.
Which Volvo got the V8 first?
The XC90 was the first Volvo model powered by the company’s new V8. Volvo’s international release dated 10 January 2005 describes the engine’s XC90 introduction; a US announcement is dated 7 September 2004 and said the V8 would debut at the Paris Motor Show on 23 September. What was the B8444S?
B8444S is the factory designation listed in Volvo Car Sverige AB’s 2010 S80 technical data. That table gives a displacement of 4,414 cm³, an aluminum block and head, 232 kW, 315 hp at 5,950 rpm, and 440 Nm at 3,950 rpm. Why was the V8 unusual?
Volvo designed the engine for transverse installation, with the engine mounted across the vehicle rather than lengthwise. The 60-degree bank angle made it narrower than the more usual 90-degree V8 layout; Volvo paired it with a counter-rotating balance shaft to address the configuration’s imbalance. The left cylinder bank sat half a cylinder ahead of the right, which Volvo said helped the engine fit within the XC90’s structural beam arrangement.
Volvo listed the engine at 754 mm long, 635 mm wide, and 190 kg. The compact layout was intended to leave room for frontal crash structures. Power, torque and equipment
Volvo’s publications use different power units and market conventions. The international release gives 232 kW/315 hp, specifying 311 SAE hp; US S80 engine material lists 311 bhp and 325 lb-ft; UK S80 material lists 315 PS and 440 Nm. These are market-specific published figures, so the unit label and source matter when comparing them.

The 2005 international release describes continuous variable timing for both inlet and exhaust valves. It also says an intake-manifold valve closed below 3,200 rpm to broaden the torque curve. For the XC90, Volvo paired the V8 with a six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive using its Instant Traction system; Volvo credited Swedish supplier Haldex with developing the AWD technology. Equipment can differ by market and model year.

How did the XC90 and S80 applications differ?
- XC90: The first model application, in an SUV. Volvo’s 2005 international press figures include 0–100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and fuel consumption of 13.3 liters/100 km for the five-seater. Treat those as period Volvo press figures for the specified vehicle, not as a universal result for every XC90 V8 configuration.
- S80: The first Volvo sedan application, announced in 2006. The 2009 UK material describes a 315 PS AWD version, while Volvo’s Swedish 2010 table provides the B8444S technical figures above.
Volvo warned that specifications could vary by country and change without notice. Acceleration and fuel-consumption numbers should therefore be read with their stated model, seating configuration, market, and test basis rather than used as a direct XC90-versus-S80 comparison.
