Volvo Cars’ announced 15% reduction was a planned cut to its global office-based workforce—not 15% of all employees—and the company said the reductions would primarily affect office positions in Sweden. What the 15% figure actually means
On 26 May 2025, Volvo Cars announced a SEK 18 billion cost-and-cash action plan that included an estimated reduction of around 3,000 positions globally, including consultant roles. The company described that figure as around 15% of its total global office-based workforce, not 15% of everyone it employs. Volvo Cars’ announcement said the reductions would primarily affect office-based positions in Sweden.
The 3,000 figure was an estimate for the plan, not a U.S. job-loss count. Volvo Cars said around 1,200 employee-held positions would be reduced in Swedish operations and around 1,000 consultant positions would be cut, most of them in Sweden. Remaining employee reductions were expected in other global markets; the announcement did not give a U.S. total. The announcement’s breakdown distinguishes company employees from consultants.
Did Volvo Cars say U.S. workers were targeted?
No U.S.-specific target is established in the cited company statements. The May 2025 plan named Sweden as the primary location for office-based reductions and referred to remaining employee reductions in other markets without identifying the United States or assigning it a number.

In its Q2 2025 results, reported in July, Volvo Cars said the reductions were moving into execution and that approximately 1,100 people had already left the company. The company did not provide a location breakdown for those departures, so that figure cannot show how many, if any, were U.S. workers. Volvo Cars’ Q2 results do not identify a U.S. count.
What is known about the 2026 U.S. claim?
Volvo Cars’ 2 October 2026 statement withdrew its previous full-year volume and cash-flow outlook, citing weaker-than-expected sales and market conditions, deteriorating conditions in China, and a slower-than-expected recovery in the U.S. It said further actions would be shared with its Q3 results on 23 October. That statement is business context; it does not announce U.S. layoffs. The outlook update does not establish a distinct 2026 U.S. workforce-cut round.

What Volvo Cars said about timing
When it announced the 2025 plan, Volvo Cars set a goal of completing the structural changes during autumn 2025. That was the company’s stated target at the time, not confirmation that every change was completed by then. The later Q2 update confirmed execution was underway and gave the company-wide departure figure, but no geographic detail.

This announcement concerns Volvo Cars, the passenger-car business, also known as Volvo Car AB. It is not an announcement by Volvo Group, the separate truck and industrial-equipment company. The similar names can make headlines about workforce changes easy to misattribute.
