Neither Volvo nor Caterpillar is universally better. For a production fleet, the right choice is the truck that matches your payload class, loader, material, grades, haul-road conditions and local support. Volvo’s A45 and Caterpillar’s 745 are the closest direct comparison; Volvo’s A60 targets a larger, high-volume class, while Caterpillar’s 730 is intended for smaller or more constrained jobsites.
The published specifications show meaningful differences, but horsepower or body volume alone cannot prove lower cost per tonne. A matched duty-cycle trial, supported by local fuel, maintenance, parts and uptime data, is the defensible way to choose.

Volvo and Caterpillar articulated trucks at a glance
An articulated hauler (also called an articulated dump truck) uses a hinged frame so the tractor and dump body can move relative to one another. That articulation helps the truck follow uneven ground and maintain traction where a rigid dump truck would be limited. The machines in this comparison are off-road production trucks, not road-legal highway vehicles.

| Model | Published payload | Heaped body capacity | Published gross power | Best fit indicated by the maker |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo A45 | 46.3 sh tn | 33.4 yd³, SAE 2:1 heaped | 490 hp | Approximate 45-ton-class production hauling |
| Caterpillar 745 | 45.2 t rated payload | 26 m³, SAE 2:1 heaped | 511 hp | Approximate 45-ton-class production hauling; C18 engine meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage V standards |
| Volvo A60 | 60.6 sh tn | 43.9 yd³ heaped | 630 hp maximum gross | Very high-volume, 6×6 production applications |
| Caterpillar 730 | 31 tons (28 tonnes) | 17.5 m³ heaped | 375 hp | Compact jobsites, smaller loaders and constrained haul routes |
The A45 and 745 are the meaningful head-to-head pair. Their payload labels are close, but Volvo reports short tons and Caterpillar reports metric tonnes, so the numbers should not be treated as identical. Their body capacities also use different volume units. Convert units consistently when you model production, and confirm the exact body, tailgate and sideboard configuration in the quotation.
Which models actually compete with each other?
Volvo A45 versus Caterpillar 745
Both trucks occupy the roughly 45-ton payload segment used for quarry, earthwork, large road projects and major site development. That makes them natural substitutes when your loading equipment, haul roads and production target are already sized for this class.
The published figures give Caterpillar an advantage in gross horsepower and Volvo an advantage in stated heaped body volume, but those are not production results. A truck with more power can still move fewer tonnes per hour if it waits for the loader, loses time at the dump point, or burns more fuel on a particular duty cycle. A larger nominal body can also be under-filled when the loader bucket, material density or legal payload limit prevents full utilization.
Volvo A60
The A60 is a step up in capacity rather than a direct A45/745 substitute. Volvo describes it as a 6×6 designed for maximum productivity at the lowest cost per tonne. Its size can reduce the number of truck trips needed on a long haul, but only when the loader, road width, turning areas, dump pad and maintenance facilities can support it. Sending an oversized truck onto a narrow or weak route can erase any theoretical cycle-time advantage.
Caterpillar 730
The 730 is a smaller articulated truck positioned for compact jobsites. Caterpillar states that it is a 31-ton (28-tonne) truck with a 17.5 m³ heaped body and says it can achieve up to 16% more fuel efficiency with more dirt moved per fuel used. That is a Caterpillar claim tied to its stated comparison and operating assumptions, not an independent result against a Volvo model. The 730 can be the better economic choice when a smaller excavator or wheel loader, tight access, lower bench height or shorter haul makes a 45-ton truck spend too much time waiting.
Payload and body volume: start with the loading tool
Truck selection should begin with the loading unit, not the truck brochure. The loader’s bucket size, rated payload, reach and cycle time determine whether a truck can be filled efficiently. Count the planned passes and check that the final bucket does not routinely exceed the truck’s rated payload. An under-loaded truck wastes tire, fuel and driver capacity; an overloaded truck increases stress, braking demand and compliance risk.

- Match passes to the truck. A consistent, repeatable loading pattern is preferable to a nominally larger body that requires awkward partial passes.
- Use actual material density. Loose shot rock, blasted rock, wet clay, sand and demolition debris occupy the same volume but weigh very different amounts.
- Check body geometry. A 2:1 heaped capacity is a standardized reference, not the volume you will achieve in every material. Sticky clay may not shed cleanly; coarse rock may bridge or leave voids.
- Verify payload control. Weighing systems, onboard payload displays and loader scales can reveal whether the fleet is consistently volume-limited or weight-limited.
- Include the dump point. Tailgate behavior, body raise time and clearance can affect cycle time where dumping space is restricted.
For the A45 and 745, compare payload in one unit system and compare body capacity in one volume unit before calculating cycles. Do not infer that the truck with the larger published body will move more saleable tonnes; the limiting factor may be axle loading or material density.
Power, grades and traction
Published horsepower is a useful screening number, but gradeability depends on more than peak engine output. The transmission ratios, torque curve, retarder, differential locks, final drives, tire selection, payload and road resistance determine how quickly a loaded truck climbs and how confidently it descends.
Questions to ask on your haul road
- What is the longest sustained grade, and what is its maximum gradient?
- How much of the route is loose, muddy, rutted or wet during the operating season?
- Are there tight switchbacks, cross-slopes, soft shoulders or dump approaches that require a particular articulation and traction strategy?
- Will trucks run empty on the same grade often enough that downhill control and retarding capacity affect the cycle?
- What tire sizes and tread patterns are approved for the exact configuration, and how do they affect flotation and rolling resistance?
On a firm, well-maintained haul road, rolling resistance and traffic management may dominate. On a steep or slippery route, all-wheel-drive behavior, differential-lock engagement and operator control can matter more than a modest horsepower difference. Ask each dealer for a grade-speed chart or a duty-cycle simulation using your payload, route length and road resistance; do not substitute a generic brochure gradeability claim.
Volvo describes the A60 as a 6×6. That layout can be valuable where maintaining traction across all axles is a priority, but the benefit depends on tire condition, ground pressure and how the road is maintained. The 745 and A45 should be evaluated using the same route data and payload assumptions rather than a brand-level assumption about traction.
Fuel use and maintenance economics
Fuel is usually one of the largest variable costs, yet published percentage claims are not interchangeable. Volvo says the current A60 delivers up to 5% more productivity and up to 15% better fuel efficiency than the previous generation. Caterpillar says the 730 can achieve up to 16% more fuel efficiency with more dirt moved per fuel used. Both are manufacturer statements with model-specific baselines; neither is an independent Volvo-versus-Caterpillar test.

Build a service-cost request
- List the planned annual hours and the number of shifts per day.
- Request scheduled-service intervals, fluid capacities and the labor time for each service from the local dealer.
- Price filters, lubricants, belts, brakes, transmission components and other high-wear parts for the quoted configuration.
- Obtain tire size, expected replacement assumptions and casing or retread policy for your ground conditions.
- Ask for warranty duration, exclusions, travel charges and after-hours labor terms in writing.
- Separate planned maintenance from unscheduled repairs and include a realistic downtime allowance.
Use the same assumptions for both brands. A lower purchase price can be overwhelmed by tire consumption, longer service travel, poor parts availability or low utilization. Conversely, a higher-priced truck may earn its place if it completes more productive hours and the dealer can return it to service quickly.
Operator productivity, visibility and safety
Operator performance affects loading alignment, spotting, throttle use, gear selection, dumping accuracy and idle time. During a demonstration, evaluate the cab rather than relying on a feature list.
- Visibility: Check sight lines to the loading tool, berms, dump edge, mirrors and reversing area from the normal seat position.
- Controls: Confirm that transmission, retarder, differential-lock and body functions are easy to select while wearing work gloves.
- Ride and fatigue: Run a full shift or extended trial on the actual route if possible. Excessive vibration or noise can reduce attention before the truck reaches its mechanical limits.
- Rollover prevention: Review the manufacturer’s operating limits for side slopes, dump-body use and uneven ground. Articulation does not eliminate rollover risk.
- Training: Confirm the dealer’s operator familiarization, onboarding and refresher-training options for your workforce.
- Payload and fault information: Check whether the display gives clear warnings for overload, traction events, temperatures and service faults.
Safety equipment and controls are valuable only when operators understand them and supervisors enforce the operating limits. Include cab access, three-point contact, handrails, lighting, camera coverage and lockout procedures in the same evaluation as horsepower and payload.

Local support can decide the outcome more than a small specification difference. Compare the dealer serving the actual project location, not the manufacturer’s national reputation.
Measure support before signing
- Ask for the normal and emergency technician response time at your site.
- Confirm which parts are stocked locally and which must be shipped, including tires and major filters.
- Review the nearest field-service branch, mobile-tooling capability and after-hours contact process.
- Request references from comparable quarry or heavy-earthmoving fleets in the same region.
- Compare telematics access, data ownership, alert routing and the ability to export cycle, idle and fault data.
- Ask whether rental or loaner trucks are available during major repairs or seasonal peaks.
- Check resale evidence for the exact model, hours, emissions tier and configuration in your market.
Uptime should be expressed as a business assumption that can be tested: expected operating hours, planned service hours, average repair duration and the number of standby trucks required. If a dealer cannot provide a credible parts and response plan, treat that uncertainty as a cost rather than assuming it will be solved after delivery.
How to run a fair Volvo-versus-Caterpillar trial
A short demonstration is useful only when both trucks perform the same work under controlled conditions. Use the following sequence for an A45/745 comparison or for a larger-versus-smaller fleet study.

- Define the job. Record material type, moisture, density estimate, loading tool, lift height, route length, grades, intersections, dump method and target production.
- Set the payload rule. Use the same legal and safe payload objective for each truck, and record actual onboard weights rather than relying on body appearance.
- Standardize the loading area. Keep the excavator or loader, operator, loading position and bucket policy consistent.
- Measure complete cycles. Time queueing, loading, travel loaded, dumping, return travel and spotting. Do not report only travel speed.
- Record fuel correctly. Use tank-to-tank or verified fuel-meter data over enough cycles to smooth idling and warm-up effects.
- Track interruptions. Log tire checks, warning events, operator adjustments, traffic holds, road maintenance and loading-tool delays.
- Repeat in representative conditions. A dry, empty demonstration does not establish performance in wet or soft conditions.
- Calculate tonnes per productive hour. Divide measured tonnes by the hours the truck is available for production, then show the assumptions separately from the result.
When a full trial is impossible, use historical fleet data from trucks doing the same route and material. Label estimates as estimates, and keep manufacturer claims separate from your own measured results.
Calculating total cost per tonne
Use a site-specific model rather than choosing on list price or horsepower. A practical structure is:
| Cost or output item | What to enter | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Acquisition or rental | Purchase price or recurring rental charge, financing and residual value | A higher capital cost may be justified by greater utilization or resale. |
| Productive output | Measured tonnes per hour after queueing, loading and dumping delays | Cycle time and payload determine revenue-producing capacity. |
| Fuel | Liters per hour or per cycle under the actual route and payload | Grade, rolling resistance, idle time and operator practice can dominate. |
| Tires | Purchase price, expected hours and failure allowance | Rock, sharp edges, heat and underinflation can change tire cost dramatically. |
| Maintenance | Scheduled labor, parts, fluids, inspections and unscheduled repairs | Service access and local parts pricing affect both cost and availability. |
| Downtime | Expected lost hours and standby capacity | A cheap truck that is unavailable can cost more than a premium truck that works. |
| Site constraints | Road upgrades, turning space, dump-pad preparation and traffic controls | Larger trucks may require infrastructure that smaller trucks do not. |
Once the inputs are verified, divide total hourly cost by tonnes per productive hour to obtain a cost-per-tonne estimate. Run sensitivity cases for fuel price, tire life, utilization and downtime; those variables are often more influential than a small difference in quoted horsepower.
Which truck fits common site conditions?
Quarry or large earthmoving project with a 45-ton loading fleet
Shortlist the Volvo A45 and Caterpillar 745. Choose between them using measured cycle output, fuel, tires, service response and resale evidence in your region. The published power and body figures can identify a trial candidate, but they cannot establish the winner by themselves.
Long haul with high volumes and suitable infrastructure
Consider the Volvo A60 when the larger 6×6 platform can be fully loaded, the haul road can carry its size and the loader can keep it supplied. Confirm turning radii, road width, dump-pad strength and maintenance access before assuming that fewer trips will reduce cost.
Compact site, small loader or restricted access
Consider the Caterpillar 730 or another truck in its capacity class. A smaller truck may achieve better utilization when the loading tool cannot fill a larger body efficiently or when the route has tight geometry. Compare the number of trucks required to meet the production target rather than judging one truck in isolation.

Soft, wet or variable ground
Give traction, ground pressure, tire choice, articulation behavior and road maintenance priority. Obtain a demonstration in the conditions that cause your current fleet to slow down. A nominal payload advantage is not useful if the truck cannot maintain safe, repeatable cycles.
What the published claims do—and do not—prove
Volvo’s current A60 material describes up to 5% more productivity and up to 15% better fuel efficiency than the previous generation. Caterpillar’s current 730 material reports up to 16% more fuel efficiency and uses the “Haul more, dump more” positioning. These statements are useful for understanding how each maker markets the model, but they use different baselines and are not a controlled comparison between brands.
The available manufacturer specifications establish payload, body volume, power and stated emissions information for the listed models. They do not establish a universal lifecycle-cost winner, local purchase price, dealer uptime, tire life or independent fuel ranking. Those items must come from your quotations, operating records and a matched trial.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPractical verdict
For a roughly 45-ton production application, choose between the Volvo A45 and Caterpillar 745 after normalizing units and testing both on the real route. Caterpillar’s published specification shows more gross horsepower, while Volvo’s shows greater heaped body volume; neither fact alone demonstrates lower cost per tonne.
Select the Volvo A60 when its larger 6×6 capacity can be continuously loaded and your roads, loader and dump areas support the machine. Select the Caterpillar 730 when a compact-site truck better matches the loading tool, access limits and required production. In every case, the better truck is the one that delivers the lowest verified cost per tonne with acceptable safety and uptime from the dealer serving your site.
