Yes—Volvo VNL Autonomous trucks are hauling commercial freight between Dallas and Oklahoma City, but the service launched in May 2026 is supervised, not fully driverless. Volvo and Aurora say they plan to begin driverless VNL operations in Q1 2027; that is a target, not a confirmed start date.
Where Volvo’s autonomous trucks are operating
The announced service connects Dallas with customer facilities in Oklahoma City. Volvo Autonomous Solutions says the route is 200 miles long and runs five days per week under supervised autonomy. The company says the trucks reach customer endpoints directly, reducing the need for intermediate drayage moves and handoffs.

That is a specific freight operation, not evidence that autonomous VNLs are available on every route or operating without supervision across the wider highway network. The announcement does not specify the details of the supervision arrangement.

“Autonomous” can describe a vehicle designed for automated driving without meaning that every trip is driverless. Here, the distinction is material: Volvo and Aurora describe the current Oklahoma City service as supervised, while driverless operation remains a future plan.

How the VNL and Aurora Driver are designed to work together
Volvo unveiled the production-ready VNL Autonomous at ACT Expo in May 2024. It is purpose-built for autonomous operation, with duplicated systems for safety-critical functions including steering, braking, communications, computation, power management, energy storage and vehicle motion management. Volvo says the intentional redundancy is meant to improve safety and reliability; the design description is not a guarantee that failures or collisions cannot occur.
Aurora Driver is the automated-driving system integrated into the truck. It is described as an SAE Level 4 system and uses dual computers alongside proprietary lidar, high-resolution cameras, imaging radar and additional sensors. Volvo Group said in 2024 that the truck’s lidar could detect objects more than 400 meters away. That is a manufacturer-stated sensor capability, not a measure of the truck’s stopping distance or proof of performance in every operating condition.

The partnership combines Volvo’s commercial-truck engineering and manufacturing with Aurora’s virtual-driver technology. Volvo describes the result as an integrated solution for hub-to-hub freight. The operating evidence announced so far is narrower: the supervised Dallas–Oklahoma City customer route.
Manufacturing plans and fleet targets
Volvo says the autonomous VNL will be assembled at its New River Valley plant in Dublin, Virginia. In May 2026, the company said line-side integration of the Aurora Driver had begun there and that it planned to build hundreds of autonomous VNL trucks in 2027.

Aurora’s Q2 2026 shareholder letter set a more specific fleet expectation: Volvo was expected to have more than 300 driverless trucks by the end of 2027. This is a forecast, not a delivered fleet count. Production, system validation and regulatory execution will determine whether the target is met.

The mileage figures refer to different things and should not be combined. Volvo Group reported in 2024 that Aurora’s Driver had accumulated 1.5 million commercial miles of public-road testing. Aurora’s Q2 2026 shareholder letter reported nearly 440,000 cumulative driverless miles through June 2026. The latter figure describes driverless miles, not all testing mileage.

For those nearly 440,000 driverless miles, Aurora reported 100% on-time performance and zero collisions attributed to Aurora Driver. These are company-reported results over the stated period, not independently established guarantees or predictions of future performance. They also do not change the supervised status of Volvo’s Oklahoma City program.
