Software-defined vehicles (SDVs) promise to make vehicle functions easier to update and reuse, but automakers have to move beyond architectures built around many separate electronic control units (ECUs). NXP CoreRide is an integration platform—not a single chip—that brings computing, networking, power management and partner software together to help automakers develop that next generation of vehicle architecture.

What is NXP CoreRide?

NXP launched its open S32 CoreRide platform on March 28, 2024. It combines NXP S32 processing, vehicle networking, system power management and pre-integrated software from ecosystem partners. The aim is to reduce the complexity of building an SDV architecture and give automakers a platform that can be adapted across vehicle programs.

CoreRide is intended to support a progression from domain-based designs to zonal and centralized architectures. Those terms describe different ways of organizing vehicle electronics:

Architecture How functions are organized What the structure means
Domain-based Electronics are grouped by function, such as powertrain or body control. Functional groups can be developed and managed separately, but a vehicle may still have many distinct controllers.
Zonal Controllers are organized around physical areas of the vehicle and connect devices in those zones. Grouping by location can change how wiring and control responsibilities are distributed; it does not by itself mean all vehicle computing is centralized.
Centralized More vehicle functions are handled by a smaller number of central computing units. Consolidation can reduce the number of separate ECUs, while making dependable isolation and coordination between functions especially important.

These are architectural approaches, not a guarantee that every CoreRide vehicle will use the same layout. The appropriate design depends on how an automaker divides functions, safety responsibilities and computing workloads.

How does NXP enable software-defined vehicles?

CoreRide’s approach is to present hardware and software building blocks together rather than asking an automaker to assemble every layer independently. NXP supplies S32 compute, vehicle networking and power-management components, while partner software is integrated into the platform. That combination is meant to help automakers reuse software and scale an architecture across vehicle models and levels of centralization.

Integration does not remove the engineering work required to deploy an SDV. Automakers still have to establish how software is isolated, how safety-critical functions are validated, how cybersecurity is maintained, and how new components fit with legacy systems and suppliers. Those requirements shape whether consolidation can translate into a production-ready vehicle.

E-Com CANCapture Software and Unlocked ECOM Device (E2372000D)
  • CANCapture Software And One Unlocked ECOM Interface Device (USB To CAN Hardware) (E2372000D)
  • CANCapture is a flexible, powerful and cost-effective software application for capturing and analyzing traffic on a controller area network (CAN) bus. CANCapture was designed with engineers in mind, and during its evolution, it has been continually adapted to fit the needs of all aspects of CAN development. One Unlocked ECOM (USB to CAN hardware interface) device is included with each purchase of CANCapture. Unlocked ECOM devices are not sold separately.
  • Fully customizable data flow management wires up your CAN data however you want. Load and modify the CAN database and connect or disconnect functional blocks without ever having to stop the live capture. Database manager is integrated into the application. Instantly jump to definitions, search the database and add variable watches, graphs, etc. Full J1939 database and support included!
  • No license keys! Install CANCapture on every computer in your organization; there's no longer any need to share a laptop. Connect multiple ECOM devices in the CANCapture flow chart to create virtual gateways that can bridge, manipulate, filter and analyze activity between isolated buses.
  • A colorized raw packet list lets you easily visualize and analyze the data on the CAN bus by allowing colors to be assigned to messages in the CAN database. As each packet is received by a Raw Capture block, it gets assigned a color and is displayed and scrolled in real time. Custom scripting allows for everything from end-of-line testing procedures to on-the-fly data encryption/decryption.

Which companies partner with NXP on CoreRide?

NXP named BlackBerry QNX, Elektrobit, ETAS, Sonatus, TTTech Auto, Vector, Wind River and Valeo among the CoreRide ecosystem partners. Their participation reflects CoreRide’s reliance on software and system integration alongside NXP silicon; it should not be read as evidence that every partner supplies every component in a CoreRide vehicle.

NXP’s 2025 agreement to acquire TTTech Auto adds the MotionWise software platform to its SDV strategy. An acquisition agreement signals an intended addition to the ecosystem, but is distinct from a statement that every product or integration is already available in every CoreRide deployment.

Can software-defined vehicles reduce the number of ECUs?

Yes. A concrete example came on June 12, 2025, when NXP and Rimac Technology announced a centralized ECU platform based on NXP S32E2 processors. The companies said it consolidates more than 20 ECUs into three centralized units. That figure describes their announced platform, not a universal result for all SDVs or a reduction guaranteed by CoreRide alone.

Fewer controllers can simplify parts of a vehicle’s electronics architecture, but ECU count is only one measure. A meaningful comparison between SDV approaches should also consider topology, separation of real-time and application processing, safety and security provisions, networking bandwidth and Ethernet support, software portability across vehicle models, partner coverage, development and validation effort, and the ability to scale from premium vehicles to broader segments.

What is NXP S32N7?

Announced on January 5, 2026, the S32N7 series is NXP’s processor family for centralized vehicle functions. NXP says it covers propulsion, vehicle dynamics, body, gateway and safety functions; Bosch was named as the first deployer. The announcement places S32N7 within the central-computing direction of NXP’s SDV strategy, while the Rimac S32E2 platform is a separate example of ECU consolidation.

Where do S32K5 and S32J fit?

NXP’s S32K5 extends the CoreRide portfolio into zonal and electrification systems. S32J addresses safe and secure automotive Ethernet switching. Together, these product roles show that the platform strategy covers more than central processors: zonal control and the network connecting vehicle systems are also part of the architecture.

What automakers still need to solve

Centralization can make vehicle-wide software management more coherent, but it concentrates responsibilities that were previously distributed across multiple controllers. Before choosing an architecture, an automaker needs to work through:

  • Safety certification: demonstrate that safety-related functions meet the applicable requirements for the vehicle and market.
  • Cybersecurity: protect connected systems and manage software changes over the vehicle’s life.
  • Real-time isolation: prevent one workload from interfering with time-critical or safety-critical functions.
  • Legacy integration: connect new compute and networking designs to existing electronics and vehicle programs.
  • Supplier coordination: define interfaces, responsibilities and validation across the automaker and multiple technology partners.

CoreRide’s value proposition is therefore integration and architectural flexibility, not an automatic shortcut around vehicle engineering. The Rimac example demonstrates that substantial consolidation is possible in a specific platform; whether the same balance is right elsewhere depends on each vehicle’s functions, constraints and validation requirements.
