Short answer: choose the Volvo 850 T-5R if you want a rare, front-wheel-drive performance estate with distinctive styling and clearly documented period output. Choose the early Audi S4 Avant if permanent quattro traction, a turbocharged five-cylinder and all-weather speed matter more than simplicity. Neither is automatically the better or cheaper car today; the condition, specification and records of the individual vehicle matter more than the badge.
The name “Audi S4” covers several generations. This comparison is specifically about the first-generation C4 S4 Avant from the early 1990s, not the 1997 second-generation S4 with a 2.7-litre V6 biturbo. Confirm the chassis, model year, engine code, market and transmission before comparing a listing with a Volvo.

First, identify the exact Audi
Audi launched the original S4 in August 1991 as the performance successor to the Audi 200 quattro, with an Avant estate following shortly afterward. Audi’s retrospective describes a 2.2-litre turbocharged five-cylinder and permanent quattro all-wheel drive. The later second-generation S4 introduced in 1997 used a 2.7-litre V6 biturbo, so a generic “1990s S4 wagon” description can refer to two mechanically different cars. For clarity, this article calls the early car the C4 S4 Avant.
Year and engine-code checks are not paperwork trivia. Audi’s official erWin catalogue, for example, lists a 1994 S4 wiring document for the 2.2-litre AAN engine. Service information, electrical diagrams and parts references should match the car in front of you; do not order documentation solely because an advert says “S4.” You can verify the listing in the Audi erWin 1994 S4 documentation entry.

Core specifications at a glance
The figures below come from different manufacturers and publications, in different units and test contexts. They are useful for understanding each model’s intent, not for declaring a laboratory winner in a same-day wagon comparison.
| Question | Volvo 850 T-5R estate | Audi C4 S4 Avant |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | High-performance version of the Volvo 850 five-door estate. | Avant estate version of the first-generation S4, launched in 1991. |
| Engine | 2,319 cc turbocharged five-cylinder. | 2.2-litre turbocharged five-cylinder in the original S4. |
| Published output | 240 bhp at 5,600 rpm and 300 Nm, according to Volvo Car UK’s 1995 period press specification. | 171 kW in Audi’s retrospective specification for the original S4. |
| Drivetrain | Transverse engine and front-wheel drive for the 850 architecture. The wider 850 range included AWD variants, so verify the exact car rather than generalising from the model family. | Permanent quattro all-wheel drive was standard on S models. |
| Published acceleration | 0–62 mph in 7.0 seconds for the estate; the same period sheet lists 6.9 seconds for the saloon. | 0–100 km/h in 6.2 seconds in Audi’s retrospective. |
| Published top speed | Not stated in the cited T-5R press specification. | 244 km/h in Audi’s retrospective. |
| Historical UK launch price | £28,840 for the estate and £27,800 for the saloon in the 1995 press document. | Not stated in the cited Audi retrospectives. |
Volvo’s own 850 model history identifies the transverse, front-drive 850 layout, while the period T-5R press specification supplies the 240-bhp, 300-Nm and 7.0-second estate figures. Audi’s 2016 S4 retrospective and 2021 S4 retrospective provide the original S4’s 171 kW, 6.2-second and 244-km/h figures.
How the two wagons deliver performance
Volvo: front-drive turbo character
The T-5R starts with the 850’s transverse five-cylinder, front-wheel-drive architecture and turns it into a performance derivative. Its 240 bhp and 300 Nm give the estate strong period pace while preserving the compact, mechanically direct layout that defines the 850. Under acceleration, the front tyres must both steer and transmit the engine’s torque. That makes tyre condition, alignment and throttle discipline especially important when you are evaluating a used car, even if a road test feels completely normal.
Front drive also gives the Volvo a different personality from the Audi. It can feel light and familiar in ordinary corners, with no propshaft, centre differential or rear-drive hardware to inspect. The trade-off is traction: on a wet or uneven surface, the Audi can distribute drive through all four wheels while the Volvo relies on the available grip at the front axle. The correct conclusion is not that one system is universally superior; it is that the Volvo rewards a driver who values its distinctive front-drive behaviour and the Audi suits someone who regularly encounters poor weather or low-grip roads.
Audi: five-cylinder turbo with permanent quattro
The C4 S4 Avant combines a turbocharged 2.2-litre five-cylinder with permanent quattro all-wheel drive. Audi states that the original S4 used quattro as standard on S models, so the drivetrain is a defining part of the car rather than an optional traction package. The additional driven hardware changes the way power reaches the road and adds more components whose condition and service history deserve attention.

Audi quotes 171 kW, 0–100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and a 244 km/h top speed for the original S4. Those numbers look stronger than the Volvo’s period 0–62-mph estate figure, but the units, publication dates and test methods differ. Audi’s value is a manufacturer retrospective, while Volvo’s 7.0 seconds comes from a 1995 UK press specification. Treat both as published claims, not a controlled, same-tyre, same-fuel wagon test.
Performance numbers: what they do and do not tell you
The Volvo’s 7.0 seconds is measured to 62 mph, approximately 100 km/h, and applies to the estate; the saloon is listed at 6.9 seconds. Audi’s 6.2 seconds is explicitly 0–100 km/h. The small difference in endpoint does not remove the larger issue: the figures were produced by different organisations under unknown, non-matched conditions and decades apart. A buyer should use them to establish the cars’ performance class, not to predict which particular survivor will win a sprint.

Age can overwhelm the brochure. Turbo boost control, intercooler plumbing, cooling performance, fuel delivery, clutch or automatic-transmission condition, tyre compound and alignment all influence an old car’s acceleration. A perfectly documented, mechanically standard example may feel quicker and safer than a modified car with a higher claimed output but unresolved faults. Ask for cold-start and warm-running demonstrations, then arrange an independent inspection rather than relying on a seller’s timed run.
Wagon practicality and everyday use
Both cars are estates designed to combine family carrying ability with speed, but the available evidence does not establish like-for-like cargo-volume figures. Do not publish or rely on a numerical boot-capacity winner without a source for the exact body style and measurement standard. Instead, inspect the actual car: check the rear-seat split, load-floor condition, tailgate operation, parcel shelf, roof loading points and the height of the lift-over edge.
The Volvo’s five-door 850 estate body and the Audi’s Avant body make each suitable for ordinary errands, long trips and hobby equipment. Their age changes the practical calculation. Rubber seals, tailgate struts, window regulators, switches, interior plastics and luggage-area trim may be more important to your daily experience than a few tenths in a period acceleration claim. Operate every door, latch, light, wiper setting and seat adjustment before buying; replacement difficulty varies by market and trim.

Consider where you will drive. The quattro Audi is the more natural choice for frequent rain, snow or steep unpaved access, provided its all-wheel-drive system is correctly maintained. The front-drive Volvo may be easier to understand and service for an owner who mostly drives in dry conditions and wants the lighter mechanical footprint of the 850 layout. Neither statement proves a reliability advantage; it is a use-case match.
A disciplined buying process
1. Confirm identity before discussing price
- Record the VIN, model year, market of first sale and body style.
- For the Audi, confirm that it is a C4 S4 Avant, not a later S4 generation and not a related Audi model wearing an S4 or S6 description.
- Verify the engine code and displacement. The early car should correspond to the 2.2-litre turbo five-cylinder described by Audi; a 1994 AAN reference is not proof that every market used the same specification.
- For the Volvo, verify that the car is a T-5R estate rather than a regular 850 Turbo, another 850 derivative or a converted example.
- Check transmission type, steering position and market equipment, because international specifications and equipment can differ.
2. Demand a coherent history
Ask for registration records, invoices, inspection certificates and evidence of major scheduled work. Dates and mileage should progress logically. Look for documentation that identifies the engine, transmission and the parts actually fitted, not just generic statements such as “recently serviced.” A thick folder is useful only when its entries match the VIN and the mechanical work you can see.
- Match recorded mileage to inspection dates and dashboard condition.
- Separate routine servicing from major repairs or modifications.
- Ask why any engine, gearbox, turbocharger, differential or suspension component was replaced.
- Identify non-standard software, exhaust, wheels, suspension or cooling parts and request receipts for the work.
- Confirm that the seller can explain cold-start behaviour, warning lights and any known oil or coolant use.
3. Inspect the structure and body
Use daylight and a lift where possible. Check panel gaps, paint texture and corrosion around wheel arches, sills, jacking points, floor seams, tailgate edges, windscreen surrounds and suspension mounting areas. A clean-looking exterior can hide previous accident repairs or water ingress. Compare both sides of the car and inspect beneath carpets in the load area for dampness or repairs.
Have a specialist measure the structure if there is any doubt about crash damage. Do not treat a replacement panel as automatically disqualifying, but insist on a clear explanation, photographs or invoices and a professional assessment of alignment and corrosion protection.
4. Test the engine and turbo system
Start the car from cold, with the temperature documented before arrival. Observe oil-pressure or engine warning lights during start-up, idle quality, exhaust smoke and unusual noises. During the road test, check smooth progression into boost, hesitation under load, overheating, coolant smell and the return to a stable idle. Ask the inspector to look for oil or coolant leaks, damaged hoses, loose electrical connectors and signs of unapproved boost changes.

These are inspection actions, not claims that every T-5R or S4 suffers a particular defect. A 30-year-old turbocharged engine can be excellent or expensive depending on servicing and previous use, so diagnosis on the individual car is more informative than a generic internet fault list.
5. Evaluate transmission, driveline and chassis
On a manual car, check clutch take-up, bite-point consistency, gear selection when cold and hot, synchromesh behaviour and noise under load. On an automatic, check engagement delay, shift quality and fluid condition according to the correct service procedure. Listen for wheel-bearing, driveshaft and differential noise and note any vibration that changes with speed or throttle.
For the Audi, ask the inspector to examine the complete quattro driveline, including propshafts, differentials, driveshaft joints and any evidence of mismatched tyres. Permanent all-wheel drive adds capability but also makes tyre specification, rolling circumference and service records significant. For the Volvo, concentrate on front-drive components, steering feel, inner and outer CV joints, engine mounts and front-axle alignment. In both cars, inspect dampers, springs, bushes, brake discs, hoses and lines rather than assuming a performance badge means upgraded parts are still healthy.
6. Verify electrical systems and documentation
Operate every electrical function: exterior lighting, instruments, warning lamps, climate controls, windows, mirrors, central locking, audio equipment and heated features where fitted. Intermittent faults are easier to document during an inspection than after purchase. Use a battery and charging-system test, and scan for faults with equipment appropriate to the car’s era.

Buy or borrow a workshop manual only after confirming year, engine, market and edition. Volvo maintenance references cover 1995–96 T-5R Turbo Sportswagon and 850 service information, but the exact edition still matters. Audi’s erWin catalogue provides a model- and engine-specific starting point; its 1994 AAN listing demonstrates why a generic “S4 manual” is insufficient. The manual should support the VIN and the systems actually fitted, not merely resemble the car’s brochure.

Condition, reliability and running cost: what can be concluded
No named, dated reliability study or current cost-of-ownership dataset establishes that the T-5R is categorically more reliable, cheaper or easier to own than the C4 S4 Avant. The available performance figures are model specifications, not durability tests. Current parts prices, labour rates and classic-car values also vary by country, supplier and the condition of the example.
That uncertainty should change how you budget. Set aside money for an inspection, transport, fluids, tyres, battery and deferred maintenance before comparing purchase prices. Price a complete repair rather than one component: a cooling-system issue can involve hoses, radiator, thermostat, fans and labour; a driveline noise can require diagnosis across several assemblies. Obtain written estimates from a workshop familiar with the specific car and local parts supply.
Records reduce uncertainty but do not eliminate it. A low-mileage car may have age-related seals, stale tyres or long periods of inactivity, while a higher-mileage example with regular use and detailed maintenance may be the better purchase. Ask what has been done, when and by whom, then verify the claim on the lift and during a road test.

How to choose after the inspection
Score each candidate against the same questions instead of letting colour, rarity or a seller’s story dominate. Give the greatest weight to structural integrity, engine and drivetrain health, and evidence of maintenance. Then consider your climate, annual mileage, storage, access to specialists and tolerance for downtime. A car that needs one documented cosmetic repair may be preferable to a cheaper example with unknown turbo, cooling or driveline work.
Reject or renegotiate when the seller cannot establish identity, the VIN and documents conflict, the inspection finds structural corrosion, warning lights remain unexplained, or the drivetrain shows symptoms that the budget cannot absorb. Walk away from pressure to skip a cold start or independent inspection. A 1990s performance wagon is an enthusiast purchase, but it is still a mechanical system whose condition can be measured.
Verdict
The Volvo 850 T-5R estate and C4 Audi S4 Avant represent two credible interpretations of the fast family wagon. Volvo’s period specification gives the estate 240 bhp, 300 Nm and 0–62 mph in 7.0 seconds; Audi’s retrospective gives the original quattro S4 171 kW, 0–100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and a 244 km/h top speed. The Volvo is the more distinctive front-drive choice. The Audi is the more traction-focused choice with permanent all-wheel drive and the early S4’s turbocharged five-cylinder.
Buy the Volvo when its character, layout and documented originality suit your roads and your taste. Buy the Audi when C4 quattro capability and a properly identified 2.2-litre car fit your use. In either case, make the final decision on the individual VIN, inspection report and maintenance history—not on an unqualified “S4” label or a brochure number taken out of context.
