Choose a used Vento by its exact year, engine, gearbox and condition—not by the fuel badge alone. A well-maintained 1.5 TDI suits drivers who regularly cover long highway distances and want strong mid-range torque and the diesel’s rated efficiency. A petrol Vento is usually the safer fit for predominantly urban driving, shorter trips and buyers who want to avoid diesel-specific usage and rule questions. The car’s service history, transmission behaviour, inspection findings and purchase price can outweigh the petrol-versus-diesel decision.
The short answer: petrol for urban use, diesel for sustained highway work
There is no universal winner among used Vento versions. The right choice depends on how the car will be driven and which mechanical package you are actually buying.

- Choose an earlier 1.5 TDI when your routine includes frequent highway travel, substantial annual mileage and a preference for diesel torque. The diesel’s 250 Nm gives it the strongest mid-range pull in the earlier range, and its published efficiency rating is higher than the cited petrol figures.
- Choose a petrol Vento when most journeys are in traffic, distances are short or your annual use is modest. The 1.6 MPI is mechanically straightforward, the 1.2 TSI has a responsive turbo-petrol character, and the later 1.0 TSI is the BS6-era petrol option.
- Treat the gearbox as a separate buying decision. A manual and a dual-clutch automatic can have very different risk profiles even when they use the same engine. Jerks, hesitation or poor downshifts during a test drive are reasons to stop and investigate before negotiating.
- Verify the registration year, engine and transmission. “Vento petrol” covers several different powertrains, while BS6 Vento cars were petrol-only. A listing title is not enough evidence of the specification.
First identify which Vento you are comparing
The Vento’s engines changed over time, so a petrol-versus-diesel comparison that ignores model year can produce the wrong conclusion. Confirm the registration and manufacturing details from the vehicle documents, then match the engine and gearbox to the car itself.

| Engine | Published output | Transmission information in the cited material | What it means for a used buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.6 MPI naturally aspirated petrol | 1,598 cc; 105 PS; 153 Nm | 5-speed manual | Earlier petrol option with linear, non-turbo power delivery and fewer turbo-related components to assess. |
| 1.2 TSI turbocharged direct-injection petrol | 1,197 cc; 105 PS; 175 Nm | DSG automatic | Earlier turbo-petrol with more torque than the MPI; gearbox condition is central to the purchase decision. |
| 1.5 TDI turbocharged common-rail diesel | 1,498 cc; 110 PS; 250 Nm | 5-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic | Earlier diesel choice aimed at long-distance efficiency and strong mid-range acceleration. |
| 1.0 TSI turbocharged petrol (BS6 era) | 110 PS; 175 Nm | 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, depending on variant | Later BS6 Vento petrol; do not compare it as though it were the earlier 1.2 TSI or 1.6 MPI. |
The engine figures for the 1.6 MPI, 1.2 TSI and 1.5 TDI come from Volkswagen India’s earlier Vento technical brochure. Volkswagen’s BS6 transition moved the Vento to the 1.0 TSI, rated at 110 PS and 175 Nm, with manual and automatic choices depending on variant. The BS6 car was offered only with petrol, so a later Vento described as BS6 cannot be a diesel.

How the engines feel on the road
1.5 TDI: strongest mid-range shove
Autocar’s used-Vento guide describes the 1.5 TDI as more audible at high revs but strong in the mid-range. That character is useful when joining a highway, climbing with passengers or overtaking without constantly downshifting. The diesel’s 250 Nm is substantially above the 1.6 MPI’s 153 Nm and the 1.2 TSI’s 175 Nm in Volkswagen’s earlier table.
That advantage matters most when the car is driven far enough for its efficiency and torque to be useful. A diesel that spends most of its life crawling through short urban trips may not suit your use as well as its specification suggests. Judge the candidate by its service history and actual operating pattern, not by the torque figure alone.
1.6 MPI: predictable manual-petrol behaviour
The naturally aspirated MPI delivers its power without a turbocharger. In a used car, that can appeal to buyers who prefer a straightforward engine response and a manual gearbox. Its output is lower in torque than either turbocharged option, so it may require more revs and more frequent gear changes when the car is loaded or a hill rises.
1.2 TSI: responsive turbo-petrol, DSG-dependent
Autocar characterises the TSI as having a broad, responsive powerband. The turbo-petrol therefore offers a different feel from the MPI, with stronger torque at everyday engine speeds. On an actual used example, however, the DSG’s condition is as important as the engine’s response. A smooth drive in traffic, clean take-off and consistent downshifts are essential checks.
1.0 TSI: later BS6 petrol choice
The 1.0 TSI replaced the earlier Vento combinations in the BS6 transition. Volkswagen announced 110 PS and 175 Nm, with six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions depending on version. Because this is a different generation of powertrain, do not use an earlier 1.2 TSI or 1.5 TDI buying guide as a direct specification sheet for it.

Fuel economy: use the published figures carefully
Published economy numbers are variant-specific ratings, not guarantees of what your car will return in traffic. The cited figures come from different engines, gearboxes and documents, so they should not be collapsed into one simple petrol-versus-diesel promise.
| Version | Published economy | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 TDI DSG | 22.15 km/l (ARAI-rated) | Autocar India used-Vento guide published around 2020; applies to the specific diesel DSG cited. |
| Earlier TSI | 18.19 km/l (ARAI-rated) | Autocar India used-Vento guide published around 2020; applies to the specific TSI version cited. |
| 1.0 TSI manual | 17.69 km/l | Volkswagen India Vento brochure, January 2021; claimed figure for the manual version. |
| 1.0 TSI automatic | 16.35 km/l | Volkswagen India Vento brochure, January 2021; claimed figure for the automatic version. |
No real-world fuel-consumption test or current fuel-price dataset establishes a break-even distance for choosing diesel. Your result will vary with traffic, tyre pressures, load, driving style, maintenance and fuel prices in your city. Use the ratings to understand the versions, then budget from your own likely usage rather than treating them as a promise.
A practical decision framework for a used Vento petrol or diesel
1. Map your driving pattern
Write down a normal month rather than relying on an annual guess. Count how many trips are under a few kilometres, how often you drive on open roads and whether the car will regularly carry passengers or luggage. Frequent highway runs favour the TDI’s torque and rated efficiency. Predominantly urban, short-distance use points toward petrol, especially when the alternative is an older diesel with an uncertain history.
2. Check local rules before choosing diesel
Diesel-use restrictions and age rules can differ by city and state and may change. The available evidence does not establish current rules for your location. Confirm the applicable registration-age limits, entry restrictions and enforcement position with the relevant local authority before buying an older diesel.
3. Compare the complete purchase risk
Set aside money for an independent inspection and a repair reserve before you compare asking prices. A cheaper car with deferred suspension, body or gearbox work can cost more than a better-documented example. There is no reliable universal ownership-cost winner because parts prices, workshop rates, fuel prices, driving pattern and neglected maintenance differ from car to car.

4. Give condition more weight than the badge
Two Ventos with the same engine can have very different futures. Prioritise complete service records, consistent ownership information, a clean inspection and a transmission that behaves correctly from cold start through a long test drive.

Confirm identity and paperwork
- Match the registration certificate, vehicle identification number, manufacturing year and odometer reading with the seller’s description.
- Confirm whether the car is an MPI, TSI or TDI and whether the gearbox is manual, DSG or the later six-speed automatic.
- Ask for invoices and scheduled-service records, not only a stamped booklet. Look for dates, kilometre readings and evidence of work that matches the car’s age.
- Check whether the seller can explain gaps in the history, changes of ownership, insurance claims or long periods off the road.
Inspect the body and expensive exterior parts
Look for inconsistent panel gaps, paint shades, overspray, corrosion and signs of repaired impact. Autocar specifically warns that parts such as the front bumper, bonnet and headlight assembly can be expensive for the segment. A clean-looking exterior does not prove that the underlying structure or cooling system is undamaged, so inspect the engine bay and underside as well.
Evaluate the engine cold and hot
- Arrange to see the car before it has been warmed up. Observe starting time, idle stability, warning lights and unusual smoke.
- Check for fluid leaks, damaged hoses, poor wiring repairs and evidence of neglected servicing.
- On a TSI or TDI, ask the inspector to assess turbocharger behaviour and any abnormal intake or exhaust symptoms; do not rely on a brief seller demonstration.
- Verify that cooling fans, air-conditioning and all dashboard functions operate during a full drive.
Test the gearbox methodically
For a manual, check clutch take-up, gear selection, clutch slip under load and any noises in each ratio. For a DSG, drive slowly in traffic, accelerate progressively, perform several downshifts and reverse into a parking space. Autocar flags jerks in gear and poor shifts—particularly during downshifts—as warning signs, and notes that DSG repair can be expensive. A single smooth run around the block is not enough evidence; insist on a thorough drive from cold to operating temperature.
Listen for suspension wear
Drive over broken roads at low speed with the windows open. Clunks, sharp impacts or looseness can indicate worn bushes or other suspension work. Have the car lifted so a qualified inspector can check joints, dampers, tyres, brake components and underbody damage. Suspension wear is a condition issue, not a reason to reject every Vento, but it must be reflected in the price and repair plan.
Check recalls and campaign work
Volkswagen lists a central wiring harness campaign affecting Vento vehicles manufactured between 2016 and 2017. Use the official Volkswagen recall campaign process to check the individual vehicle and confirm completion with a certified Volkswagen technician. Do not assume that a seller’s verbal assurance or an otherwise clean dashboard proves the campaign was completed.

Earlier 1.6 MPI manual: the conservative petrol route
This is the natural option for a buyer who wants a manual petrol Vento and values predictable, naturally aspirated delivery. It is less torquey than the turbocharged engines, so test it on your normal slopes and with the load you expect to carry. Condition, clutch wear and service history still determine whether a particular car is a good purchase.
Earlier 1.2 TSI DSG: choose only with strong gearbox evidence
The 1.2 TSI’s responsive powerband can make it enjoyable in mixed driving, but the DSG deserves a stricter inspection than a casual test drive. Reject or reprice a car that shudders, hesitates, bangs into gear or shifts poorly when warm. Obtain documentation for previous gearbox work and budget for specialist diagnosis if the behaviour is not completely consistent.
1.5 TDI manual: the long-distance workhorse candidate
The manual TDI is the clearest match for a buyer who drives many highway kilometres and wants the diesel’s mid-range torque without the dual-clutch gearbox. Verify that the car’s actual history supports that use case and that maintenance has not been postponed. A diesel’s efficiency advantage cannot compensate for a neglected example.
1.5 TDI DSG: efficient on paper, inspection-critical in practice
The cited 22.15 km/l ARAI rating belongs to the 1.5 TDI DSG in Autocar’s guide, not to every diesel Vento. This version can suit a highway-focused buyer who wants an automatic, but DSG behaviour and documented care are non-negotiable. A poor shift quality can turn an apparently efficient purchase into a major repair decision.

1.0 TSI BS6 manual or automatic: later petrol alternative
The BS6 1.0 TSI is the relevant later Vento if you want a newer petrol platform. Volkswagen’s January 2021 brochure quotes 17.69 km/l for the manual and 16.35 km/l for the automatic. Confirm the exact variant, transmission and service history because those figures are not interchangeable with the earlier engines’ ratings.
Maintenance and ownership checks after purchase
Volkswagen’s maintenance information gives a general service interval of one year or 15,000 km. Follow the interval that applies to the specific vehicle and retain every invoice. An overdue service is evidence to investigate, not merely a date to reset on the dashboard.
The engine air filter is model-specific. Volkswagen warns that restricted airflow can hurt fuel economy and engine longevity, so confirm the correct filter by model year, engine and part number before ordering a replacement. A filter that physically fits but is not the specified part is not a sound maintenance shortcut.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlan maintenance around the car’s actual condition: fluids, tyres, brakes, suspension and battery may need attention regardless of fuel type. Local parts availability and workshop rates vary, so obtain estimates from a competent Volkswagen specialist before committing to a car with visible deferred work.
Final buying checklist
- Record the exact year, engine, gearbox and fuel type from the documents.
- Match the driving pattern to the engine: sustained highway use favours the TDI; mostly urban use generally favours petrol.
- Verify current local rules for an older diesel before purchase.
- Demand service records with dates and kilometre readings.
- Test a DSG from cold through warm traffic, including downshifts and reverse.
- Inspect body repairs, expensive exterior parts, suspension noise and underbody damage.
- Check the 2016–2017 central wiring harness campaign by vehicle and confirm completion with a certified technician.
- Budget for an independent inspection and condition-based repairs.
- Use published economy figures only as version-specific reference points, not as guaranteed real-world mileage.
If your use is mainly city driving, a well-documented petrol Vento is the more defensible default. If you regularly cover long highway distances, a properly maintained 1.5 TDI—manual or DSG depending on the gearbox inspection—can be the better tool. In either case, buy the individual car that passes an independent inspection, not the fuel type that looks best in a specification table.
