The word “today” belonged to a 2008 announcement, not a current reveal. The GT24 was a race car for the Nürburgring 24 Hours; it was not a production road car. The contemporaneous announcement coverage gives the reveal date, while Volkswagen’s later accounts document the race results and the distinct road-going study that followed.
When and where was the Scirocco GT24 revealed?
Volkswagen scheduled the GT24’s world premiere for May 22, 2008, at the GTI Meet at Wörther Lake. That date and venue turn the original “to be revealed today” wording into a dated announcement: it referred to May 22, 2008, rather than an event happening now. The Torque Report’s contemporaneous coverage reproduces the announcement’s premiere details.
What was the GT24?
The GT24 was the competition version of the 2008 Scirocco, built for racing rather than sold as a road-going trim. Volkswagen’s June 2008 material lists the race version at 238 kW (325 PS) and records a double class victory. That is Volkswagen’s published figure for the 2008 racing version, not an independent performance test or a specification for every later GT24 variant. Volkswagen Newsroom’s June 2008 Scirocco material provides the specification and result.
How did the GT24 perform at the Nürburgring?
Three GT24s entered the May 2008 Nürburgring 24 Hours, and two finished as class winners, according to Volkswagen Spain’s retrospective account. Volkswagen’s later Scirocco R press material clarifies that the field included GT24 TSI cars as well as GT24-CNG cars, whose pair finished first and second in the alternative-fuel class. These are separate entries and class results, not a single result for one specification of car. Volkswagen Spain’s Bologna 2008 press material reports the three-car entry and two class wins; its Scirocco R press kit distinguishes the TSI and CNG results.

Was there a road-going GT24?
No production road-going GT24 is established by these Volkswagen accounts. At the Bologna motor show in December 2008, Volkswagen presented the Scirocco Studie R as a road-going interpretation of the racer. The Studie R was a separate study, not a production GT24 and not the May 2008 competition car under another name. Volkswagen Spain’s Bologna press material describes the Studie R and its relationship to the GT24.

The GT24-CNG belongs to the later development of the program, not to the May 2008 GT24 specification. Volkswagen R’s 2022 historical account says the CNG version debuted in 2009 with 207 kW (282 PS) and 330 Nm, and later had a role in the Scirocco R-Cup. Those figures apply specifically to the 2009-debut GT24-CNG as described in that retrospective. Volkswagen R’s Media Days historical PDF gives the later specification and program context.
