Depending on your country, model, software version and connected-services status, the car may download an update in the background or ask you to approve the download; installation is a separate step that normally requires the parked vehicle and an owner action.
What “automatic update” means on a Volkswagen ID.
Volkswagen uses “automatic” differently for downloading and installing. A qualifying vehicle can receive update files while it is being driven, but that does not necessarily start the installation. Installation is scheduled afterward, with conditions such as a safe parking position, an applied electronic parking brake and a stable data connection. The exact behavior is market- and vehicle-specific.

| Market and guidance | How the download starts | How installation starts | Account or consent condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Eligible electric vehicles and some model-year 2025 gasoline vehicles can download while driving after myVW and myVW+ terms are accepted and software-download consent is given in the myVW app. Other eligible vehicles show an in-car prompt to download or cancel. | A later, separate installation action is required. A prompted download can be postponed, and installation can also be postponed. | Eligibility depends on accepting the applicable myVW/myVW+ terms and keeping the vehicle enrolled. Unenrolling from myVW removes OTA eligibility. |
| United Kingdom | Eligible vehicles can download in the background while driving when the car is in Online mode and vehicle/usage data is enabled. | The owner starts the installation after the journey, normally from the Goodbye screen once the car is switched off and the electronic parking brake is applied. | A logged-in primary user, an active mobile online-services contract and one-time consent to use data for OTA delivery are required. Exact menus vary by model and software. |
These are examples from Volkswagen’s US and UK owner guidance, not a worldwide rule. A release may instead require a Volkswagen Retailer visit. Volkswagen UK states: “Depending on the type of update, some updates can be carried out as Over-the-Air updates, while others are performed at a Volkswagen Retailer.”
Volkswagen of America’s vehicle software update guidance and the Volkswagen UK ID software update overview should take precedence over generic instructions.

Permissions and prerequisites before you look for an update
United Kingdom: Online mode, data sharing and primary user
UK instructions require the car to be online. In the infotainment system, vehicle and usage data sending and receiving must be enabled in the privacy settings. The primary user must be logged in and have an active mobile online-services contract. OTA delivery also requires one-time consent to use data for the service.
For vehicles running ID. software 3.0 or later, the UK installation guide directs owners to register as the main user with a Volkswagen ID. The ID. Software icon is available on vehicles with ID. software 3.1 or later; you can also check Setup > System Information. These thresholds do not establish eligibility for every update, because hardware and the particular release still determine whether an update is offered.
United States: myVW enrollment and app consent
US guidance uses myVW and myVW+ terms rather than the UK online-services flow. For qualifying vehicles, accept the applicable terms and use the myVW app to consent to software downloads. If you unenroll from myVW, Volkswagen says the vehicle is no longer eligible for OTA delivery. That is different from postponing one download or one installation.

Consent, postponement and opt-out are different actions
- Consent: authorizes the connected service to use the vehicle or account data needed for OTA delivery.
- Postpone: delays a download or installation that has already been offered; the vehicle may ask again later.
- Opt out or unenroll: removes OTA eligibility for the relevant service arrangement, so future updates may need another approved route, such as a retailer.
Changing a privacy toggle or account consent can therefore affect eligibility, while pressing “later” normally affects only the current update event.

How to prepare and install a UK Over-the-Air update
The following path comes from Volkswagen UK’s installation instructions. Do not assume the labels are identical on another market, model year or software build.
- Park where the car can remain undisturbed after the journey. Check the vehicle’s release message first, because that message contains the instructions for that specific update.
- Open the infotainment system’s Setup menu, enter the privacy settings and select Vehicle/Usage data. Set the car to Online mode and allow the required data exchange.
- Confirm that a primary user is logged in. On vehicles with ID. software 3.0 or higher, register as the main user with your Volkswagen ID if the system requests it.
- Drive normally while the eligible update downloads in the background. A download notification does not mean installation has begun.
- At the end of the journey, switch the vehicle off, apply the electronic parking brake and use the Goodbye screen to start installation when the option appears.
- Leave the vehicle parked with a stable internet connection for the duration shown by the vehicle. Do not interrupt the process unless the car’s instructions tell you to do so.
Volkswagen’s UK FAQ emphasizes that “The notification in the infotainment system is merely an indication about the availability of an Over-the-Air update.” Closing that pop-up does not install the software; the installation command is a separate action on the Goodbye screen.
See the UK installation instructions for the release-specific sequence.
How US downloads and installations work
When the download is automatic
Volkswagen of America says eligible EVs and some model-year 2025 gasoline vehicles download while driving after the required myVW/myVW+ acceptance and app consent. The car does not wait for a separate download button in that case.

When the car asks you to download
Other eligible vehicles display an in-vehicle prompt with the choice to download or cancel. Choosing cancel postpones the download; Volkswagen says the prompt may return on later starts. This response does not reject every future update.
Conditions for installation
US owner guidance requires a data connection for both download and installation. It also specifies that the high-voltage battery must be at least 50% at the start of installation and that the vehicle cannot be plugged in or charging during installation. Those are US instructions and should be checked against the exact prompt for your vehicle before beginning.
Installation remains a separate stage after the file is downloaded. You can postpone it, and Volkswagen may later notify you if a dealer-installed version becomes available for that vehicle.

Notification channels differ by market and campaign. In the United States, Volkswagen lists email, the myVW app, an in-vehicle message or postal mail. In the United Kingdom, a planned OTA may be announced by email and the infotainment system can display a message when installation is available.

Campaigns are released in batches rather than to every apparently similar vehicle at once. Volkswagen UK says vehicles are grouped according to hardware, and Volkswagen US also describes batch releases. Two cars of the same model can therefore receive different dates without either having a settings fault.

The campaign has not reached your vehicle
Staggered release is the first explanation to check. Eligibility is determined by vehicle hardware, country, software state and the particular campaign, not only by the badge or model name.
The vehicle is offline or data sharing is disabled
For the UK process, switch to Online mode and verify that vehicle/usage data is enabled in privacy settings. Also confirm that the primary user is logged in and the online-services contract is active. US owners should verify myVW enrollment and app consent instead; do not substitute one market’s account steps for the other.

The pop-up was only an availability notice
An infotainment pop-up can announce that an update is available without starting it. On the UK flow, switch the car off, apply the electronic parking brake and look for the installation action on the Goodbye screen.

The displayed software version did not change
Volkswagen UK warns that some updates improve apps, systems or background functions without changing the visible software version. Check the infotainment update information and the release notes for your campaign rather than treating an unchanged number as proof of failure. The ID. Software icon and Setup > System Information can help identify the installed software, but they do not describe every background change.
The installation cannot start
- Confirm the vehicle is safely parked and the electronic parking brake is applied where the instructions require it.
- For US vehicles, check the 50% high-voltage battery minimum and make sure the car is not connected to a charger.
- Maintain the required data connection and follow the exact timing and conditions shown in the vehicle prompt.
- If the release identifies a retailer installation, schedule that service instead of repeatedly changing privacy settings.
OTA update or Volkswagen Retailer: which route applies?
| Decision point | Over-the-Air route | Retailer/workshop route |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Only campaigns and vehicles approved for OTA delivery in that market. | Used when Volkswagen assigns the release to a retailer or the vehicle is not OTA-eligible. |
| Owner setup | Requires the market-specific connected-service account, online status and data consent described in the vehicle guidance. | Requires arranging the service with a Volkswagen Retailer; OTA account consent does not by itself make a workshop update available. |
| Download and installation | Download may occur in the background or after an in-car prompt; installation is a separate owner-initiated step. | The retailer performs the update using the workshop procedure. |
| Notification | May arrive by email, app, infotainment message or mail, depending on market. | Volkswagen communicates when a dealer installation is the available option. |
| Software-version display | Some background improvements may not alter the displayed version number. | The service record and retailer explanation may be needed to confirm what was installed. |
Because Volkswagen determines the method for each release, neither OTA nor a retailer visit is a permanent preference that owners can force for every future update.
How to check the result without guessing
- Read the vehicle’s release notes or update information before installation so you know which functions the campaign addresses.
- After installation, open the infotainment update information and check Setup > System Information where available.
- Compare the result with the release notes, not only the headline version number; background components can change without a visible version change.
- If the vehicle still reports an incomplete installation, repeats the prompt after all stated conditions are met, or directs you to a retailer, follow that message rather than repeatedly revoking consent.
Volkswagen describes updates as potentially improving operation, performance, comfort or features, but the benefit depends on the individual release. Only the release notes for your vehicle establish what a particular update changes.
