Autocar lists the eHybrid powertrain as a 1.5 TSI plug-in hybrid with a 19.7 kWh battery, DSG transmission, 4MOTION all-wheel drive and 245 PS. These are independently reported specifications; check the current UK manufacturer documentation for the exact vehicle being quoted.
Volkswagen describes the California as a campervan with two sliding side doors and a redesigned kitchen, and lists diesel, petrol and plug-in hybrid engine options. Its dimensions and technical specification page provides further model context.

VED classification can affect the ownership-cost comparison
Volkswagen’s California brochure and price information distinguishes the eHybrid trims for vehicle excise duty (VED): Coast and Ocean are classed as passenger cars, while Beach is classed as a camper van. The brochure also describes a possible additional VED supplement for qualifying Beach and Ocean eHybrid vehicles whose list price exceeds £40,000, including specified charges and VAT.
Under the brochure’s stated terms, that supplement is £410 in addition to standard-rate VED from years two through six; after year six, it says only standard-rate VED applies. Tax rules and the treatment of a particular vehicle can depend on the current regulations and its exact configuration, so verify the amount and classification before comparing total costs.
