Vintage Electric Bikes: The 1890s Designs That Put Motors on Two Wheels

Two U.S. patents from the 1890s reveal visually distinctive ideas for electric bicycles—and why patent drawings should not be mistaken for surviving machines.

Electric bicycles were already being imagined in the 1890s. Two U.S. patents—Ogden Bolton Jr.’s 1895 design and Hosea W. Libbey’s 1897 design—show how inventors tried to combine a bicycle with batteries and electric propulsion. Their patent drawings are striking historical designs, but they are evidence of ideas disclosed, not proof that production bikes were built or that examples survive today.

What did the first electric bicycles look like?

They looked like experiments in fitting new electrical machinery to the familiar bicycle. Bolton’s patent describes a motor wheel with components enclosed by a ring and side plates, along with a battery, wiring, and a handlebar rheostat. Libbey’s later patent presents a different arrangement: a double electric motor, a duplex-tread rear driving wheel, and a saddle-shaped reservoir associated with its battery system.

These details make the patent drawings visually compelling. Calling them masterpieces is an editorial judgment about the inventiveness and appearance of the designs on paper—not a claim that a particular surviving bicycle is a museum object.

Why were inventors experimenting with electric bicycles?

The designs appeared during a period when the bicycle itself was changing quickly. In the 1880s and 1890s, the safety bicycle—with two similarly sized wheels, chain drive, and gears—became the defining form. Pneumatic tires and improved brakes also helped shape the modern bicycle. The Smithsonian describes a broader bicycle boom: an estimated 200,000 bicycles were in use in 1889 and 1,000,000 in 1899. Those estimates concern bicycles generally, not electric-bike sales. Electric propulsion was one of the possibilities inventors explored amid this growing interest in bicycles. The Henry Ford notes that e-bike patents date to the 1890s. It also attributes the long delay before serious interest in e-bikes partly to high cost and weight, limited battery range, and cultural resistance to putting motors on bicycles. That is the museum’s historical account, rather than a quantified market study. (The Henry Ford: RadWagon 5 Joins the Bicycle Collection)

How did the 1890s patent designs differ?

Design Drive and motor Battery and controls What the patent establishes
Ogden Bolton Jr., US552271A, issued December 31, 1895 Describes a motor wheel with components enclosed by a ring and side plates. Describes a battery, wiring, and a handlebar rheostat. The patent discloses this arrangement; it does not establish production or commercial success. (Patent US552271A)
Hosea W. Libbey, US596272A, issued December 28, 1897 Describes a double electric motor and a duplex-tread rear driving wheel. Describes primary batteries and a saddle-shaped reservoir associated with the battery system. The specification documents a distinct design on paper; it does not establish that an example was built exactly as illustrated. (Patent US596272A)

The contrast is clearest in the machinery and layout: Bolton’s patent centers on a motor wheel and a handlebar control, while Libbey’s describes a more unusual rear-wheel and battery arrangement. Patent drawings can show what an inventor disclosed, but they do not tell us how either design performed on the road or whether it was commercially successful.

Are any 1890s electric bicycles still around?

The sources cited here do not verify a specific surviving 1890s electric bicycle, its provenance, or its present display location. A patent drawing should therefore be captioned as a patent drawing or as the design disclosed in the patent—not as a photograph of an existing bicycle. General bicycle collections do not, by themselves, establish that a museum holds one of these particular electric models.

What did bicycle design culture sound like in the 1890s?

A period statement reproduced by the National Museum of American History captures the era’s confidence in bicycle engineering. It is attributed to Scientific American, January 4, 1896; the Smithsonian page does not identify an individual speaker:
