For most Vietnamese first-time buyers who only want the lowest cash price, an older used gasoline hatchback is still the cheaper starting point. August–September 2026 asking-price averages were about VND 195 million for a Kia Morning, VND 258 million for a Hyundai Grand i10 and VND 320 million for a Toyota Wigo. The new VinFast VF 2 launched at VND 188 million with the battery included, so it can be cheaper than some used cars on the window sticker. Its advantage depends on registration, insurance, financing, charging access and how long you keep it.
The practical choice is therefore conditional: choose a carefully inspected older used car when absolute upfront cash is the priority; choose the VF 2 when you value a new vehicle, have dependable charging access and can use its temporary public-charging benefit.

The prices that shape the decision
There are two different comparisons here: a new, battery-included city EV against used petrol cars whose prices vary substantially with age and condition. Comparing only the advertised number can produce the wrong answer.

VinFast officially unveiled the VF 2 on 5 July 2026 at VND 188 million, including the battery. The company repeated that figure in its 15 July reservation announcement. A promotional product page has also displayed VND 178.6 million. Because those figures may represent different offers or terms, ask the dealer to confirm the price, eligibility, deposit conditions and expiry date on your order form. Do not assume that the lower displayed amount is universally available.

Neither figure is an all-in, drive-away price. Registration and plate charges, compulsory and optional insurance, financing fees, accessories and delivery-related charges can raise the amount you need before collecting the car. The exact total depends on your province or city and your payment method.
Used-hatchback asking prices

These are advertised prices aggregated from listings. Sellers may accept less, and a cheap listing can require immediate tyres, brakes, fluids, suspension work or paperwork. A buyer should treat the figures as a range anchor, not as a guaranteed transaction price.

Why locality changes the cash requirement
Registration taxes and fees are location-sensitive. Toyota’s official 2026 example for a new Wigo G shows a total of roughly VND 446.32 million in other provinces versus VND 474.42 million in Hanoi. That example is not the VF 2’s final price and is not a used-car quote; it demonstrates how the same model can require materially different on-road cash depending on where it is registered. Obtain a local calculation for your actual address before declaring a winner.

What “cheaper” should include
Use four separate totals instead of one headline number:
- Cash at purchase: vehicle price, registration, plate, compulsory insurance, inspection-related charges, dealer fees and any down payment.
- Energy: electricity for the VF 2 or petrol for a used car, including the charging equipment and access you actually have.
- Maintenance and repairs: scheduled servicing, tyres, brakes, fluids and age-related failures.
- Finance, insurance and resale: interest, comprehensive-cover premiums, depreciation and the amount you can recover when selling.
No five-year total-cost table, universal insurance quote or buyer-specific loan terms are provided here. Those variables can reverse a sticker-price result, so calculate them from local offers rather than assuming that an EV or a petrol car is automatically cheaper.
Energy costs: when free charging helps and when it does not
The VF 2 charging promotion
VinFast’s product information says public V-Green charging is free for up to 10 sessions per month through 10 February 2029, subject to the programme’s terms. This can reduce early running costs for an urban driver who lives or works near participating stations and can schedule charging within the monthly allowance.
It is not lifetime free energy. The benefit has a fixed end date and a session cap. A driver who needs more than 10 public sessions, cannot reach a V-Green station conveniently or mainly charges at home will receive less value. Confirm which connector, station, account and vehicle-registration rules apply before relying on the promotion.

How to compare electricity with petrol
For a fair monthly estimate, record your own kilometres and use current local prices:
- Estimate monthly distance from your work, school, family and weekend trips.
- For the VF 2, divide the energy used for that distance by the vehicle’s measured efficiency, then multiply by your household or public electricity tariff. Subtract only the charging sessions you are genuinely eligible to receive free; cap the deduction at 10 sessions per month and stop it after 10 February 2029.
- For a petrol hatchback, multiply kilometres by the car’s real-world litres-per-kilometre figure and then by the current petrol price. Use the specific engine and traffic conditions rather than a generic brochure number.
- Add access costs: a home charger or electrical work for the EV, and parking or detours to fuel stations for either vehicle.
Without your annual kilometres, charging location and electricity and petrol tariffs, no single energy-cost verdict is reliable. Low-mileage drivers may save little because they consume little fuel; high-mileage urban drivers with convenient free sessions may see a larger VF 2 advantage during the promotion.
Practicality: two doors and four seats versus familiar five-seat layouts
The VF 2 is a two-door, four-seat city EV. That layout can work well for a single driver or a couple using it mainly in town, but rear-seat access is less convenient and it cannot carry five occupants legally. Check child-seat access, passenger frequency and loading needs before treating its low price as a complete substitute.
The Toyota Wigo is specified by Toyota as a five-seat gasoline hatchback, and used Kia Morning and Hyundai Grand i10 examples commonly serve the same small-car role. Individual used cars differ in safety equipment, body style and condition, so verify the exact trim and registration documents. If you regularly transport four adults, a child seat and luggage, the extra door and seat may be worth more than a nominally cheaper purchase price.

The used-car risk that the price table cannot show
A VND 128 million or VND 195 million listing can become expensive after purchase if it has neglected maintenance. Before paying a deposit, budget for an independent inspection and a repair reserve.
Check the car’s history
- Match the chassis and engine numbers to the registration and ownership documents.
- Confirm service invoices, odometer consistency, accident repairs, flood exposure and commercial-use history.
- Inspect cold-start behaviour, warning lights, transmission operation, steering, suspension, brakes, tyres, air conditioning and electrical equipment.
- Measure paint and inspect panel gaps for repaired crash damage; examine the underside for corrosion or impact.
- Have a technician scan the electronic systems and test-drive the car in the traffic and speeds you normally encounter.
Set aside money for tyres, a battery, fluids and brakes even when the inspection is positive. The correct reserve depends on the car’s age, mileage and condition; the available market data does not provide a universal amount.
What a new VF 2 removes—and what it does not
A new car generally removes unknown previous-owner wear and gives you a known starting date for maintenance. It does not eliminate registration, insurance, financing or depreciation, and the available information here does not establish the battery warranty terms for every VF 2 transaction. Ask for the written warranty, service schedule, roadside assistance terms and exclusions before signing.

Financing, insurance and depreciation can change the ranking
Compare offers using the same down payment, loan term and insurance coverage. A lower-priced used car can carry a higher interest rate or require cash repairs; a new VF 2 can have a larger financed balance or higher comprehensive-insurance premium. Request written quotes that show the annual percentage rate, processing fees, compulsory cover and optional cover separately.

Resale value is also uncertain. A used car has already absorbed part of its initial depreciation, while a new EV buyer takes the first ownership period. Conversely, the VF 2’s lower energy and maintenance spending could offset some depreciation for a high-mileage owner. No verified five-year resale or ownership schedule is available, so use a conservative resale assumption and test the result at several values.
Two buyer cases produce different answers
Case 1: the lowest possible upfront cash
Start by searching older Kia Morning, Chevrolet Spark and Hyundai Grand i10 listings, including cars below the market averages. Choose only after an independent inspection and document check. Add registration transfer costs and a realistic repair reserve to the asking price. A sound VND 128–195 million car can beat the VF 2 on cash required, but a neglected example can erase that advantage quickly.
Case 2: a new city car with predictable early energy spending
If you want a new vehicle, drive mostly in town and can reliably use V-Green stations, the VF 2’s VND 188 million battery-included launch price is competitive with a used Kia Morning and below the cited Grand i10 and Wigo averages. Treat free public charging as a temporary discount, not as a permanent ownership feature. Confirm the final promotional price, on-road fees, financing and insurance before ordering.

- Write down your province, registration address and the date you need the car.
- Set a maximum all-in cash budget, not just a listing-price budget.
- Record kilometres per month and the percentage driven in town versus on longer trips.
- For the VF 2, verify the VND 188 million or VND 178.6 million offer in writing, battery inclusion, delivery timing and charging-program eligibility.
- For each used car, obtain the chassis history, service records and an independent inspection report.
- Get comparable insurance and loan quotes for both choices using the same deposit and term.
- Price your actual electricity access, petrol route, parking and likely maintenance for the first year.
- Run the totals again after the charging promotion ends and with a lower resale value than your optimistic estimate.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing the VF 2’s headline price with a used car’s price while ignoring registration and transfer costs.
- Treating a marketplace asking-price average as a completed-sale price.
- Counting all public charging as free after 10 February 2029 or above 10 sessions per month.
- Assuming every used Morning, Grand i10 or Wigo has the same safety equipment, mileage or reliability.
- Ignoring the VF 2’s four-seat, two-door limitation when your household needs five seats.
- Using a national fuel or insurance assumption instead of quotes for your province and driver profile.
Verdict
If your priority is the lowest possible upfront cost, begin with inspected used Chevrolet Spark, Kia Morning or Hyundai Grand i10 listings and keep cash in reserve for repairs. Their asking-price spread means a carefully chosen older car can cost less than a new VF 2 after registration.
If you want a new, compact city car, have dependable access to V-Green charging and value lower early energy spending, the VF 2 at VND 188 million including its battery can be the better-value purchase—especially against higher-priced used Wigo or Grand i10 examples. The answer is not universal: province, kilometres, charging access, financing, insurance and the condition of the specific used car determine the real winner.
