A July 2021 report described a video of a Tesla Model 3 moving through floodwater in China’s Henan province. It does not establish the water’s depth, whether the car was damaged, or that a Tesla can safely drive through floods. The National Weather Service advises drivers to turn around at flooded areas, and Tesla says a Model 3 exposed to flooding should not be driven until an authorized shop has inspected it.
What the video reportedly shows
Futurism’s Victor Tangermann reported on July 22, 2021, that a social media video posted by codebear on July 20 showed a Tesla Model 3 moving through floodwater. The location was reported as China’s Henan province. The report said nearby combustion-engine vehicles appeared to be stalled while the Tesla moved through the water.
That visual contrast is not a controlled comparison of electric and gasoline vehicles. The reviewed report does not establish the precise location, water depth, Model 3 model year, or driver identity. The social post’s attribution is reported by Futurism, not independent authentication of the footage. Most importantly, the report said the car’s long-term condition was unclear; it does not show that the vehicle emerged undamaged.
Does this prove a Tesla can safely drive through floodwater?
No. A vehicle moving through water in a clip demonstrates only what appears to happen during that moment. It does not establish a safe depth, show what conditions were beneath the water, or reveal whether the car suffered damage afterward. The word “deep” in the report’s title is a characterization, not a measured depth.

Futurism also reproduced a 2016 statement by Elon Musk about the Model S: “We def don’t recommended this, but Model S floats well enough to turn it into a boat for short periods of time,” followed by “Thrust via wheel rotation.” That remark concerns a different Tesla model and is not engineering evidence or a safety endorsement for driving any vehicle through floodwater.
Why driving through floodwater is dangerous
The National Weather Service advises people to turn around at flooded areas because both the depth and the condition of the road or ground underneath may be unknown. Its guidance says 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult off their feet, 12 inches of moving water can carry off a small car, and 18 to 24 inches can carry away larger vehicles. These figures describe moving water; they are not tested safe-depth limits for cars.

The National Weather Service also says more than 50 percent of flood-related deaths are due to someone driving or walking into floodwaters. The risk is not limited to whether a vehicle can keep moving: water may conceal a washed-out road or other hazards, and moving water can sweep people and vehicles away.

Tesla’s current North American Model 3 owner’s manual says to treat a vehicle exposed to flooding or submersion as if it had been in an accident and contact the insurer. It directs owners not to operate the vehicle until an authorized shop has inspected it, and says water damage is not covered under warranty. This is current guidance for Model 3 owners; it does not establish what happened to the car in the 2021 video.
