In a video covered by New Atlas on May 14, 2024, the machine tears across dirt, splashes through mud, launches over jumps—and meets a fence at the builders’ property in Sandpoint, Idaho.
What is the Monster Chopper?
It is a custom-built motorcycle centered on a KTM 1190 Adventure V-twin, housed in a steel-tube trellis frame and fitted with hydraulic steering and exceptionally large off-road tires. New Atlas describes the build as weighing 814 lb (369 kg), a figure the builders reportedly obtained by weighing the bike in the video. These are article-reported details, not a set of independently verified specifications.
Why is it so unusual?
Its scale and weight
New Atlas identifies the tires as 46-inch Mickey Thompson Baja Claws. Combined with the reported 814-lb weight, they give the chopper a scale far removed from an ordinary motorcycle. The tire size is a detail of this particular custom build, not evidence that these tires are a practical or compatible upgrade for other motorcycles.
Its engine and gearing
The build uses a 1,190 cc KTM engine. New Atlas gives approximate output of around 150 hp and roughly 100 lb-ft (136 Nm) at the crank. The builders’ custom jack-shaft reduction changes the gearing; the article relays their estimate of around 3,000 lb-ft (4,067 Nm) after that reduction. That figure is the builders’ claim as reported by New Atlas, not an independently verified dyno result. The article notes that dyno figures would help establish the engine’s output.

Hydraulic steering and a custom chassis
The hydraulic steering and steel-tube trellis frame are part of a bespoke design built around the machine’s unusual proportions and off-road purpose. New Atlas also describes custom-fabricated or modified chain-related components; these are details of the build, not retail parts presented as ready-made upgrades.
What happened on the first test ride?
The ride was a working test on the builders’ property in Sandpoint, Idaho. The video, titled “Monster Chopper First Drive!”, shows the bike drifting across dirt, pushing through mud, and taking jumps. The run also includes a ride through a fence. The spectacle is part of a first shakedown, rather than evidence of a completed or fully validated motorcycle.

Was the Monster Chopper finished?
No. In New Atlas’s May 2024 account, the team was still testing the bike and modifying parts, including chain-related components. Frame finish and paint were still future work at that point. The article therefore documents an evolving experimental build, not a final production specification or a motorcycle offered for sale.
