VELOGYM combines ordinary leg pedals with a separate push-pull arm drive, so a rider can propel the recumbent trike with the arms, the legs, or both at once. Its unusual twist is that the arm lever also steers. The manufacturer lists Series 2 reservations for projected delivery in spring to summer 2027; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed delivery date.
How VELOGYM’s arm-and-leg drive works
The VELOGYM is a three-wheeled recumbent cycle with conventional pedals and a pair of arm levers that the rider moves in a rowing-style push-pull motion. New Atlas reported that the arm mechanism transmits power to the 28-inch rear wheel. The pedals can drive the trike on their own, the arms can drive it on their own, or the rider can combine the two inputs.
VELOGYM’s manufacturer says the arm lever also serves as the steering control and carries the brake, shifter, and bell. It describes the lever as usable through different positions without requiring a minimum movement. That is the company’s explanation of the mechanism, not an independent engineering assessment. VELOGYM and its FAQ provide the manufacturer’s description.
VELOGYM co-founder Gustav Holz told New Atlas: “This means you can stop using your arms at any time and continue with your legs only (and vice versa), or change the ratio of arm and leg power used, as the forces are simply added together.” The practical distinction is that the rider is not committed to a fixed arm-to-leg contribution while riding.

What makes the design different
Many arm-and-leg cycles use hand cranks or arrangements that mechanically link arm movement to the leg drivetrain. VELOGYM’s defining idea is a push-pull arm lever that both provides propulsion and steers. That integration may feel intuitive to some riders, but it also means the arm drive is part of the steering system rather than a separate control.
The manufacturer’s site reproduces this excerpt from Prof. Veit Senner, identified there as a TUM professor of sports equipment: “Nach Stand unserer Forschung hat eine Push-Pull-Bewegung gegenüber einer kreisförmigen einen Vorteil. […] diese Antriebsbewegung mit einer intuitiven Lenkbewegung zu verknüpfen, ist eine weitere innovative Ingenieursleistung.” The excerpt is the manufacturer’s presentation of his comments; without the underlying study and full context, it should not be read as proof of a general scientific advantage for push-pull exercise.

VELOGYM’s current Series 2 page lists dimensions of 200 × 89 × 90 cm and a starting weight of 25 kg, depending on configuration. New Atlas gave an earlier figure of around 24 kg (53 lb) while noting that production specifications were not finalized. Those figures refer to different reporting moments and should not be treated as measurements of an identical finished build. The manufacturer’s preorder page is the source for current listed specifications and prices; equipment may change with production.

How it compares with other arm-and-leg cycles
These alternatives differ in how arm power reaches the wheels or pedals, whether the arms steer, and the intended use. Their manufacturers’ descriptions do not establish equivalent medical or performance outcomes.
| Model | Arm and leg arrangement | Other relevant points |
|---|---|---|
| VELOGYM | Separate leg pedals and push-pull arm propulsion; the arm lever also steers. | Series 2 reservations listed by the manufacturer; prices and delivery estimate are stated above. |
| RAD-Innovations Dual Drive | A hybrid handcycle and recumbent trike: normal leg pedaling plus a hand crank that the company says makes the feet participate passively in a fixed-gear style. | The company page displays a $5,500 non-electric base price and an $8,700 electric handcycle price; confirm the current quote and configuration with the manufacturer. RAD-Innovations Dual Drive. |
| BerkelBike Pro | Arm grips move the foot pedals. The manufacturer says it can also be ridden with leg power while the grips are held as a handlebar. | Presented for mobility and rehabilitation contexts; assistance options affect configuration, dimensions, and weight. Health and disability claims should be attributed to the manufacturer. BerkelBike Pro. |
| Varibike Extreme | The manufacturer describes use with both arms, both legs, one leg, or arms and legs together, with independent optional leg cranks. | Another flexible arm-and-leg design, but it does not use VELOGYM’s steering propulsion lever. Varibike Extreme. |
Before comparing models, check the arm-motion style, whether the arm and leg drives are independent or linked, fit and seat adjustment, transport and disassembly needs, assist options, braking and visibility equipment, local service, and whether a test ride is available.

What to consider before reserving one
Fit, transport, and storage
At 200 cm long and 89 cm wide, VELOGYM is a substantial vehicle, not a compact substitute for a standard bicycle. Measure storage space, doorways, lifts, and any vehicle or rack you would use for transport. The manufacturer lists a starting weight of 25 kg, with weight depending on configuration, so confirm the chosen build’s final weight and how it can be loaded before ordering.
Traffic position and visibility
VELOGYM says the rider sits lower than on an ordinary bicycle and may be easier for other road users to overlook. It recommends separated cycleways and calmer routes. The Premium build includes a mirror, but a mirror does not remove the visibility issue; check the complete lighting and visibility setup and assess local route conditions. The company’s FAQ discusses its traffic guidance.

Fitness claims and electric assistance
VELOGYM describes the trike as a fitness-oriented full-body cycle and says it does not replace a normal bicycle. The available manufacturer material does not establish independent clinical outcomes or comparative performance figures for this model, so fitness and rehabilitation benefits should not be treated as proven medical results. The company says an e-bike version is in development and has a prototype; it is not listed as an available product.
Ordering and support
Because Series 2 timing is a projection and the product is a specialty purchase, ask VELOGYM to confirm the final configuration, price, delivery window, warranty, service arrangements, and test-ride options for your location before reserving. The manufacturer says Series 1 is sold out and directs buyers to Series 2 reservations on its preorder page.
