The estate is 4,642 mm long on a 2,732 mm wheelbase. That extra length over the Astra hatchback improves passenger space and loading flexibility, yet the choice of powertrain, a spare-wheel option and how you measure the compartment all affect the space you can actually use.

Boot space at a glance
Vauxhall’s official figures are the best starting point because they separate the three Sports Tourer powertrain layouts. The seats-up number is the one that matters for normal family use; the folded figure is a maximum for occasional bulky loads.

These figures come from Vauxhall/Stellantis technical information and the 2025 model-year specification guide. Vauxhall uses the ECIE loadspace measurement convention. An optional spare wheel can raise the boot floor and reduce the available volume, so a car fitted with it may not match the nominal figure as neatly as a car using the standard repair kit.

Which Astra Sports Tourer has the biggest boot?
The 1.2 petrol and 48V hybrid versions share the top position. Their 597-litre seats-up compartment is the largest official figure in the range, and the maximum with the backrests folded is 1,634 litres. If you routinely carry a pushchair, several suitcases, sports equipment or flat-pack purchases, these are the versions to investigate first.
The plug-in hybrid is the least capacious estate for luggage. Its battery installation takes space that the petrol car can use for the boot and its under-floor area. The electric Sports Tourer gives back some of that room, but it still does not equal the conventional powertrains. Do not apply the petrol specification to every trim simply because the bodyshell looks identical.
Official dimensions and what they mean in practice
Vauxhall lists the Sports Tourer at 4,642 mm long, 2,062 mm wide including the mirrors and 1,443 mm high. Its wheelbase is 2,732 mm. Those measurements explain why the estate can offer a longer load area and more rear-seat room than the hatchback without becoming an especially large car for town driving.

- 1,032 mm of maximum width;
- 599 mm of maximum height;
- 1,850 mm of load-floor length with the rear seats folded, according to the 2025 specification guide.
“Maximum” matters. The width is not necessarily the distance between the narrowest points around the wheel arches, and the height is not a promise that an object will pass beneath the parcel cover. The listed floor length also assumes the seats and loading surface are arranged for that measurement. Measure your own pushchair, crate or equipment at its widest, tallest and longest points, including wheels, handles and protective cases.
Floor length versus opening size
A long floor does not automatically mean a large loading aperture. Vauxhall’s published figures establish the compartment dimensions, but the material supplied for this model does not give a separate tailgate opening width or height. If you have a rigid item that must be lifted through the opening rather than slid into the car, check the physical car at a dealer before ordering.
How usable is the boot for family luggage?
For everyday family packing, the petrol or 48V hybrid’s seats-up volume is substantial enough for a conventional pushchair and holiday luggage, provided the cases are packed below the cover and shaped around the wheel-arch intrusions. The long estate floor is also useful for camping equipment, golf bags and outdoor kit that would be awkward in a hatchback.

With the backrests lowered, the estate can take long, flat or awkward loads. Remember that the maximum folded capacity is not the same as the volume available when you stack items safely under a closed cover. Heavy objects should be secured so they cannot move forward under braking.
Rear-seat room: better than the hatchback, but not limousine-like
The Sports Tourer’s 2,732 mm wheelbase is longer than the hatchback’s 2,675 mm. That extra 57 mm gives the estate more opportunity to provide rear legroom and headroom, and Autotrader describes the longer-wheelbase car as roomier for passengers than the hatchback.
Independent road tests still identify rear legroom as a limitation for tall adults. Auto Express lists limited rear legroom among the car’s disadvantages, while CarGurus reports that two average-sized adults can sit comfortably but taller occupants find more space in some rival estates. The practical verdict is therefore “adequate for average adults and better than the hatchback”, not “generous for every adult”.

Check child seats in the actual car
A rear-facing child seat uses substantially more front-to-back space than an adult. If a tall driver or front passenger must sit far back, the child seat can make the front seating position uncomfortable even though the estate has a longer wheelbase. Take your own seat to a showroom, test the intended seating position and check that the doors, seat-belt buckles and ISOFIX access remain usable.

Every Astra Sports Tourer uses a 40:20:40 split-folding rear backrest. The narrow centre section can be lowered independently, allowing long items such as skis, poles or flat-pack boards to pass through while the two outer rear seats remain available.
You can also fold one outer section for a single bulky item, or both outer sections when passenger space is not needed. This is more versatile than a simple 60:40 arrangement because it avoids sacrificing both rear passenger positions for a narrow load. Vauxhall describes the arrangement as part of its easy-fold and Intelli-Space loading concept.
Before loading, remove or secure the parcel cover, keep the driver’s view clear and use the available tie-down points where fitted. The folded-seat maximum assumes the backrests are down; it does not mean every trim creates a perfectly level surface or that a load can safely be stacked to the roof.

Why electrified versions lose capacity
The capacity gap is a packaging issue rather than a difference in estate body length. The plug-in hybrid’s traction battery occupies space that would otherwise be available below or around the luggage compartment, producing the 466-litre seats-up figure. The electric model’s 516-litre compartment is more generous than the plug-in hybrid’s but remains below the conventional car’s 597 litres.
Those differences matter most when the seats stay upright. Once the backrests are folded, all three versions gain a long carrying area, but their maximum volumes still differ. Check the exact powertrain on the specification sheet or vehicle identification documents, especially when buying a used car where exterior trim may not reveal the battery layout.
Things that can change the space you can use
- Spare wheel: the optional wheel can raise the floor and reduce the available under-floor area.
- Parcel cover: the quoted height is a maximum; everyday loading beneath the cover is lower.
- Wheel arches: maximum width is not the same as the narrowest usable width throughout the compartment.
- Charging and electrical hardware: electrified versions package components differently from petrol and hybrid cars.
- Seat position: the published folded length assumes the rear backrests are lowered and does not account for every front-seat position.
How to choose the right Sports Tourer for your loads
- List your regular loads. Record the largest suitcase, pushchair, crate or equipment case, including handles and wheels.
- Decide whether seats-up capacity is the priority. If five people travel with luggage most of the time, compare the normal seats-up figures rather than the headline maximum.
- Select the powertrain. Choose the petrol or 48V hybrid for the greatest official capacity; accept the plug-in hybrid or electric figures only if their running or charging benefits matter more to you.
- Check the physical car. Measure the tailgate opening, wheel-arch width and floor height with the chosen spare-wheel and load-floor equipment.
- Test rear passengers and child seats. Put the tallest regular passenger behind the driver and fit any rear-facing child seat before committing.
- Test the 40:20:40 function. Fold the centre section and each outer section to confirm that your longest item can pass through without removing seats.
What the estate does well—and where it compromises
Strengths
- The conventional petrol and 48V hybrid versions provide the range’s largest official boot.
- The folded load floor reaches 1,850 mm in the published specification, helping with long items.
- A 40:20:40 rear backrest gives more useful combinations of passengers and cargo than a basic split fold.
- The longer wheelbase improves rear accommodation over the Astra hatchback.
Compromises
- Plug-in hybrid and electric versions give up luggage volume to their electrical hardware.
- Tall adults may still find rear legroom tight behind a tall front-seat occupant.
- Maximum litres do not describe the narrowest point, tailgate aperture or safe everyday packing height.
- A spare wheel can reduce the under-floor storage area and alter the effective load-floor height.
Bottom line for buyers
Choose the 1.2 petrol or 48V hybrid Astra Sports Tourer when maximum luggage capacity is the deciding factor: it combines the range-topping official boot with the same useful 40:20:40 seating system. The electric estate is a middle ground for space, while the plug-in hybrid makes the clearest luggage compromise. Whichever version you consider, inspect the actual floor and opening, then sit in the rear with your tallest passenger or child seat installed. The Sports Tourer is more practical than the hatchback, but its rear accommodation remains an average-sized-adult solution rather than a class-leading one.
