The Vantablack BMW X6 was a one-off 2019 show car, not a customer model. Based on the third-generation G06 X6, it used sprayable Vantablack VBx2 to suppress reflections so dramatically that its body appeared almost two-dimensional, while the grille and lights remained visible.
A one-off show car, not a production BMW
The Vantablack BMW X6 looked less like a painted vehicle than a three-dimensional cutout from a black void. Its body appeared to lose much of the shading and reflection that normally reveal a car’s curves, leaving a stark silhouette with only selected lighting and trim details breaking through.

But the car was not a factory-order “Vantablack Edition,” a special customer trim, or an ordinary X6 finished in unusually dark paint. BMW created it as a one-off show car in collaboration with Surrey NanoSystems, the company associated with Vantablack coating technology. It was based on the third-generation BMW X6, internally designated G06, and was never offered for sale.

The timing was significant: the Vantablack car was built around the newly introduced third-generation X6, while the standard production model was scheduled to begin its showroom launch in November 2019. The show car therefore served as a dramatic design and technology demonstration for the new G06 rather than as a preview of a purchasable paint option.
What Vantablack did to the X6’s appearance
Normal automotive paint reflects light. On a curved body panel, those reflections form highlights, gradients, and shadows. Your eyes use those changes in brightness to understand where a bonnet rises, where a shoulder line turns, and how deeply a door or wheel arch is sculpted.
The Vantablack treatment suppressed most of those reflections. As a result, the X6’s physical body remained fully three-dimensional, but many of the visual cues that communicate its volume were missing. Against a dark background, it could appear almost two-dimensional.

That distinction matters. The vehicle did not become flat, transparent, or literally invisible. Its shape was still there; the coating simply made the surface much harder to read in the conventional way. Instead of seeing the usual paint highlights traveling over the body, viewers primarily saw the outline, proportions, illuminated elements, and graphic design details.
It was Vantablack VBx2—not the original CVD formulation
“Vantablack” is not a synonym for ordinary black paint. The name refers to vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays, structures designed to absorb extremely large amounts of incoming light. Surrey NanoSystems describes its broader Vantablack technology as capable of absorbing up to 99.965% of light in the relevant material and measurement context.
The BMW, however, was not covered in the original high-temperature chemical-vapor-deposited formulation. BMW identified the finish used on the X6 as Vantablack VBx2, a sprayable variant originally developed for architecture and scientific applications. BMW reported approximately 1% total hemispherical reflectance for the VBx2 treatment used on the vehicle.

Those figures should not be casually merged. “Up to 99.965% absorption” describes a broader Vantablack technology claim, while the approximately 1% total hemispherical reflectance figure relates specifically to the VBx2 coating and its measurement context. Neither number should be presented as a universal rating for every Vantablack product or as a direct independent ranking of every black car ever made.

The X6 was a particularly effective subject because it has a large body, a strong fastback-like silhouette, and muscular proportions that are normally emphasized by changing reflections across its panels. BMW designer Hussein Al Attar reportedly used the internal nickname “The Beast,” a description that suited the vehicle’s imposing stance.
BMW said the X6’s size, distinctive shape, and powerful silhouette made it a good match for the coating. The treatment gave the designers a way to remove much of the visual information supplied by conventional surface reflections and focus attention on the vehicle’s overall design architecture.
There is a useful paradox in the result: the coating both concealed and revealed the X6. It concealed the normal highlights that explain the body’s surface modeling, but it revealed the importance of the underlying outline, proportions, lights, grille, and other graphic elements. The less the body communicated through reflected light, the more important those remaining features became.
Why the grille and lights still stood out
BMW did not try to make every part of the vehicle disappear into uniform darkness. The kidney grille, twin headlights, and tail lights remained contrasting or illuminated reference points. They helped viewers identify the car and follow its front and rear ends even when the surrounding bodywork seemed to dissolve into the background.
This contrast was central to the visual effect. A completely unreadable black object would have made a poor design demonstration. By preserving the recognizable lighting signatures and grille graphics, BMW allowed the X6 to remain identifiable while making its body volume unusually difficult to interpret.

Was it really the “blackest car ever”?
“The blackest car ever” is a memorable description, but it should be treated as editorial shorthand rather than a verified ranking of every black automobile ever produced. BMW described the project as the world’s first vehicle in Vantablack and used language around the world’s blackest black. The exact optical result depends on the coating variant, application, surface, lighting, viewing angle, and measurement method.
A more precise description is BMW’s one-off Vantablack VBx2-coated X6: a vehicle designed to absorb and suppress reflections to an unusual degree, creating the impression that its body had lost depth.
Why BMW did not put it into production
The Vantablack X6 was intended to remain a one-off. BMW identified several practical obstacles to turning the effect into an everyday automotive finish:
- Durability: A road car’s exterior must withstand weather, washing, stone chips, road debris, chemicals, and repeated handling. Making the specialized finish sufficiently durable for normal automotive use was extremely difficult.
- Cost and production complexity: The coating process was expensive and not comparable with applying a conventional automotive color on a high-volume production line.
- Road-use concerns: BMW also pointed to potential safety questions associated with a finish that absorbs so much light. That does not establish that the car was legally banned from public roads; it does explain why a dramatic display coating was not treated as a normal consumer finish.
There was therefore no Vantablack X6 configurator option, reservation program, customer allocation, or production price. Claims that BMW sold or leased these cars—or that buyers could simply order one in this color—confuse the show car with the regular third-generation X6.
Can you buy a Vantablack BMW X6?
No. BMW said the vehicle would remain a one-off, and the reviewed material does not establish that the displayed car is currently held at a particular museum, collection, or other public location.
For collectors who want a physical reminder of the design, a BMW X6 die-cast model may be a practical alternative. It should be understood as a standard black BMW X6 or an X6-related scale model—not an official Vantablack replica and not a miniature coated with the same VBx2 treatment.

Could you apply Vantablack to a normal car?
Not in the same way as buying a tin of black automotive paint. Surrey NanoSystems presents Vantablack as a specialized technology supplied for technical, industrial, and design applications, often through specialist application or licensed partners. The BMW project was a collaboration involving a particular sprayable variant and a controlled application process.
The available information does not establish a consumer DIY route, nor does it establish that applying such a coating to a privately owned vehicle would be safe, legal, durable, or suitable for road use. A very dark wrap, matte black paint, or “blackest black” consumer finish would produce a different visual and technical result.

The BMW show car used the material for visual design, but ultra-black coatings have more practical automotive applications. Surrey NanoSystems describes automotive-oriented uses for controlling unwanted light in optical systems, including:
- head-up displays;
- camera shields;
- vehicle vision systems;
- lidar sensor systems; and
- matrix headlamps.
These applications use the coating to suppress stray light and improve the behavior of sensors or optical components. They are materially different from covering an entire vehicle body to create a visual effect. The technology’s useful future in cars may therefore be hidden inside cameras, displays, and sensing hardware rather than visible across the exterior panels.

Its importance was visual rather than commercial: by taking away the highlights that normally describe a car’s curves, BMW made the X6’s silhouette, proportions, grille, and lighting do nearly all the design work. The coating’s durability, expense, and road-use complications kept the idea out of production, while related ultra-black optical materials continue to have more practical potential in automotive sensing and display systems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you buy a Vantablack BMW X6?
No. BMW created the Vantablack X6 as a one-off show car and did not offer it as a production trim, special edition, reservation, or factory paint option.
What type of Vantablack was used on the BMW X6?
BMW identified the coating as Vantablack VBx2, a sprayable variant. It was not the original high-temperature chemical-vapor-deposited formulation often associated with Vantablack.
Recommended Free Tools
Did Vantablack make the BMW X6 flat or invisible?
The body remained physically three-dimensional. The coating reduced the reflections and highlights that normally help the eye perceive curves, so the vehicle appeared almost two-dimensional in certain lighting and backgrounds.
Why was the Vantablack X6 never produced?
The coating was difficult and expensive to make durable for everyday automotive use, and BMW cited potential road-safety questions related to extreme light absorption. These concerns do not by themselves establish an official legal ban.
The Bottom Line
The Vantablack BMW X6 was a 2019 one-off show car based on the G06 X6—not a production model or purchasable paint option. Its sprayable Vantablack VBx2 coating absorbed and suppressed reflections so effectively that the physically three-dimensional SUV appeared almost flat, while its grille and lights remained visible. The same technology is more plausibly useful in automotive optical and sensor applications than as an everyday exterior finish.
