V8 vs. V10 Engines: Power, Cost, and Everyday Usability

V8 and V10 cylinder counts do not determine which engine is more powerful, cheaper, or easier to live with. Compare exact vehicles, specifications, condition, fuel ratings, and local service support.

Neither a V8 nor a V10 is automatically the better engine. Cylinder count describes the layout, not the result. A particular V8 can make more power and torque than a particular V10, while a V10 may deliver a different sound, rev range, or performance character. Purchase price, fuel use, maintenance cost, insurance, parts access, and daily comfort all belong to the exact vehicle, model year, drivetrain, transmission, condition, and market—not to the cylinder count alone.

The most useful comparison is therefore vehicle-to-vehicle. The figures below illustrate why: Dodge publishes up to 710 hp and 645 lb-ft for a 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V8 in the Durango SRT Hellcat context, while Audi quotes 570 PS (419 kW) and 550 Nm for the R8 V10 performance RWD, and Lamborghini quotes 640 CV (470 kW) at 8,000 rpm for the Huracán Performante V10. Those are manufacturer specifications for different cars and applications, not a controlled V8-versus-V10 test.

What the V8-versus-V10 question really tells you

A V8 has two banks of four cylinders arranged around a common crankshaft. A V10 has two banks of five. That extra pair of cylinders can influence smoothness, firing cadence, packaging, sound, and the way an engine builds power, but it does not set a guaranteed output or ownership cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Displacement, turbocharging or supercharging, compression, camshaft and valve control, engine tuning, redline, cooling, exhaust design, gearing, transmission software, final-drive ratio, traction, and vehicle weight all affect what a driver experiences. A lightly tuned, large-displacement V8 may produce more low-speed torque than a highly tuned V10; a high-revving V10 may continue making power higher in the rev range. Comparing only the number of cylinders hides those differences.

Power and torque: why cylinder count is not a ranking

Published V8 example: 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI

Dodge lists the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI at up to 710 hp and 645 lb-ft in the Durango SRT Hellcat context. The same Dodge specification associates that configuration with a maximum towing capacity of 8,700 lb. These are Dodge’s published figures for a named vehicle configuration, not an independent dynamometer test or a universal V8 limit.

Dodge also lists a 6.4-liter HEMI at 475 hp and 470 lb-ft, and a 5.7-liter HEMI at 360 hp and 390 lb-ft. Those three V8 outputs alone show why “V8 power” is not one number: displacement, forced induction, calibration, and application change the result substantially.

Published V10 examples: Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracán

Audi states that the R8 V10 performance RWD engine delivers 570 PS (419 kW) and 550 Nm, paired with a seven-speed S tronic transmission. Lamborghini lists 640 CV (470 kW) at 8,000 rpm for the Huracán Performante V10. PS and CV are metric horsepower units used by the manufacturers; the quoted kilowatt values make the published outputs easier to compare without silently converting them.

The Audi and Lamborghini figures describe different V10 vehicles, calibrations, transmissions, and rear- or all-wheel-drive applications. Neither proves that a V10 is more powerful than every V8. The correct conclusion is narrower: these particular V10s make the outputs their manufacturers claim, while a particular supercharged V8 can exceed them in peak horsepower and torque.

Peak output is only part of usable performance

Peak horsepower is measured at a particular engine speed. Torque is also an rpm-specific value. Two engines with similar peaks can feel completely different if one reaches its torque plateau early and the other needs more revs. Gear ratios determine how often the engine operates in its strongest range, and transmission shift strategy determines how quickly the car accesses that range.

When comparing two cars, read the complete power curve if it is available, not just the headline peak. Note where maximum torque arrives, how long it is sustained, the engine’s redline, the number and spread of transmission ratios, and whether the driven wheels can use the output without traction intervention. Vehicle weight, tire specification, aerodynamics, and launch calibration can matter as much as the cylinder layout in acceleration or overtaking.

V8 and V10 driving character

What a V8 may suit

V8 engines are used across performance cars, large SUVs, pickups, and luxury vehicles, so their character varies widely. In a supercharged application such as the cited 6.2-liter HEMI, abundant torque can support strong acceleration and substantial towing capacity. In a naturally aspirated or smaller-displacement V8, the response, sound, and rev range may be very different. Treat “V8 feel” as a description of one tune and vehicle, not a fixed personality shared by every V8.

What a V10 may suit

V10s are commonly associated with high-performance applications, where a long, high-revving power delivery and distinctive firing order are part of the experience. The Lamborghini Performante specification reaches its quoted 640 CV at 8,000 rpm, illustrating that its headline output occurs high in the rev range. The Audi R8 V10 performance RWD uses a seven-speed S tronic, so gearing and software are integral to how that engine’s output reaches the road.

A V10 can feel exceptionally smooth and urgent as revs rise, but the engine alone does not determine whether a car is relaxed in traffic. Clutch or transmission behavior, steering effort, ride tuning, visibility, cooling, cabin noise, and low-speed throttle calibration determine daily comfort.

Drivetrain, transmission, and traction can outweigh the engine layout

A high-output engine is useful only if the rest of the vehicle can deploy it. Compare driven wheels, differential type, traction control calibration, tire width and compound, and transmission behavior. The Audi example is rear-wheel drive with a seven-speed S tronic; the Lamborghini Huracán EVO Spyder uses electronically controlled all-wheel drive. Lamborghini says its system “guarantees higher speed and precision in distributing the torque between the axles.” That is the manufacturer’s description of that vehicle system, not evidence that all V10 cars are easier to drive daily.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

All-wheel drive can improve traction in rain or on cold pavement, but it adds hardware, weight, service points, and potential repair exposure. Rear-wheel drive can offer a more direct performance balance and simpler driveline packaging, yet it places greater demands on tires, throttle control, and electronic aids in poor conditions. Neither layout is universally superior; match it to climate, roads, and driving skill.

Transmission choice also changes ownership. A manual gearbox may involve a serviceable clutch and dual-mass flywheel. A dual-clutch automatic such as Audi’s seven-speed S tronic has different fluid, filter, diagnostic, and mechatronic requirements. The maintenance schedule and actual condition of the installed transmission matter more than whether the engine has eight or ten cylinders.

Fuel economy: use only matched, official figures

Fuel economy cannot be compared responsibly by pairing random V8 and V10 numbers. Test cycles, model years, body styles, gearing, tire choices, emissions equipment, and regional ratings all affect the result. Manufacturer figures are estimates; real consumption varies with traffic, temperature, speed, payload, and driving style.

Vehicle and source Configuration Published fuel figure How to interpret it
Lamborghini Huracán EVO Spyder Model-specific V10 application 15 mpg combined Historical manufacturer figure; Lamborghini notes that mileage will vary.
2008 Dodge Viper Convertible V10, model year 2008 13 city / 22 highway mpg Historical U.S. Department of Energy/fueleconomy.gov guide figure.
2008 Dodge Viper Coupe V10, model year 2008 13 city / 22 highway mpg Historical U.S. Department of Energy/fueleconomy.gov guide figure.
2008 Lamborghini Gallardo Coupe V10, model year 2008 14 city / 20 highway mpg Historical U.S. Department of Energy/fueleconomy.gov guide figure.

The 2008 figures compare two V10 examples with each other; they do not establish a V8-versus-V10 advantage. The Huracán figure is also not directly interchangeable with the 2008 U.S. ratings because it comes from a different model, year, and published methodology. For a purchase decision, find the official rating for the exact year and configuration you are considering, then budget using your own fuel price and expected annual mileage.

Purchase price and total ownership cost

There is no defensible universal statement that V10s cost more—or that V8s cost less—to own. A newer, mass-produced V8 SUV can be cheaper to service than an old V10 supercar, while a neglected V8 performance car can require more immediate spending than a documented V10. Current asking prices, insurance premiums, taxes, fuel, parts, labor rates, and condition must be checked for the specific vehicle and your location.

Build a vehicle-specific cost worksheet

  1. Set the purchase baseline. Record the actual asking price, mileage, title status, number of owners, accident history, and included service records. Separate asking price from a completed sale price.
  2. Estimate fuel. Use the exact official city/highway or combined rating where available, then multiply expected annual miles by your realistic consumption and local fuel price. Add a sensitivity case for higher consumption during short trips or spirited driving.
  3. Price insurance. Obtain quotes using the exact vehicle identification, garaging address, driver profile, annual mileage, coverage limits, and agreed-value requirements. A generic sports-car estimate is not useful.
  4. List scheduled services. Include engine oil, filters, spark plugs, coolant, belts or chains where applicable, transmission and differential fluids, brake fluid, and manufacturer-specific inspections.
  5. Inspect wear items. Tires, brakes, suspension joints, battery, cooling hoses, seals, clutches, and electronic modules can dominate the first-year budget on a used performance car.
  6. Verify parts and labor. Call qualified independent specialists and franchised dealers about lead times, diagnostic capability, and current pricing for your exact year. Availability may differ by region.
  7. Reserve a contingency. Set aside money for defects discovered after purchase; a pre-purchase inspection reduces risk but cannot eliminate it.

Why older V10 ownership needs extra planning

Many V10s are discontinued performance cars. Dodge says the Viper was produced from 1991 through 2017 and is no longer in production. Its official owner-support page says a pre-owned vehicle may be available through a local dealer and directs owners to manuals, authentic Mopar parts, and dealer service, while cautioning that local dealer stock may not be available. Those routes are practical starting points, not a promise of supply, price, or turnaround time.

Before buying a Viper, identify the exact model year and generation, obtain the matching owner’s or service manual, and confirm parts fitment by vehicle identification number. Ask a specialist to inspect cooling, brakes, tires, seals, suspension, wiring, and evidence of track use. A car that has sat for long periods may need age-related work even when its mileage is low.

Everyday usability: judge the whole car

“Can you daily drive a V10?” has a practical answer: some V10 cars can serve as regular transportation, but usability depends on the car’s equipment and your route. A comfortable ride, reliable climate control, good visibility, manageable ground clearance, predictable low-speed throttle, usable luggage space, and a service network matter more than the cylinder count.

Daily-driving checklist

  • Traffic behavior: Test creeping, parking, reversing, stop-start heat, and automatic or clutch engagement when cold.
  • Climate and weather: Check traction aids, tire availability, defroster performance, water ingress, and underbody clearance for your roads and seasons.
  • Range and refueling: Confirm tank size, recommended fuel grade, realistic range, and access to suitable fuel on your commute or touring route.
  • Comfort: Drive over the roads you actually use. Evaluate seat support, ride harshness, cabin heat, noise, and visibility rather than relying on a specification sheet.
  • Practicality: Measure luggage openings and cargo volume; note door width, lift-over height, and whether passengers can enter comfortably.
  • Support: Locate a qualified service facility before purchase and ask how it handles diagnostics, recalls, software, and parts ordering.

The Huracán EVO Spyder illustrates the distinction between a model-specific feature and a general rule. Lamborghini says its electronically controlled all-wheel drive helps traction and safety on everyday trips. That may make this particular car easier to use in changing conditions, but it does not make every V10 practical, nor does it remove the costs and compromises of a low-slung performance vehicle.

Which engine layout fits common use cases?

Primary use What to prioritize How to compare V8 and V10 candidates
Daily commuting Cold-start behavior, ride, visibility, fuel cost, reliability history, service access Choose the vehicle that handles traffic and local weather comfortably; cylinder count is secondary.
Long-distance touring Seat comfort, range, luggage, cooling, highway gearing, dealer coverage Check real route practicality and parts support for the exact model.
Towing or heavy loads Rated tow capacity, low-rpm torque, cooling, transmission, brakes, payload Use the manufacturer’s rating for the exact configuration. Dodge’s cited Durango SRT Hellcat figure is 8,700 lb; do not transfer it to another V8 or any V10.
Performance driving Power curve, thermal management, brakes, tires, differential, gearbox, chassis balance Compare complete vehicle specifications and track-day support, not just peak horsepower.
Collector or occasional use Originality, documentation, storage, parts supply, specialist knowledge Condition and provenance can outweigh layout; budget for age-related maintenance and infrequent-use failures.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: assuming ten cylinders always means more power

Correct it by comparing displacement, aspiration, tune, peak figures, torque curve, gearing, and vehicle weight. The cited 710-hp supercharged V8 is a direct counterexample to a blanket V10 advantage.

Mistake: treating a manufacturer’s claim as an independent test

Dodge, Audi, and Lamborghini specifications describe their own products. They are useful for identifying the rated output, transmission, or system design, but they are not controlled comparative tests of engine layouts.

Mistake: comparing mismatched fuel numbers

Use the same region, test cycle, model year, body style, and drivetrain whenever possible. Label historical ratings, such as the 2008 U.S. guide figures, so they are not mistaken for current estimates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: budgeting only for routine oil changes

On a used performance car, tires, brakes, cooling components, electronics, transmission service, and deferred maintenance can exceed routine service costs. Obtain records and an inspection before negotiating.

Mistake: buying first and finding support later

Confirm a qualified technician, diagnostic equipment, parts channels, and realistic lead times in your area before committing. Discontinued models require this check especially carefully.

A decision process that produces a defensible choice

  1. Define the job. Write down annual mileage, passenger and cargo needs, climate, road quality, towing requirement, and performance priorities.
  2. Select exact candidates. Match generation, model year, engine, transmission, drivetrain, and body style; do not compare a modern supercharged V8 with an unrelated decade-old V10 and call the result an engine-layout verdict.
  3. Verify primary specifications. Record manufacturer-rated power, torque, rpm, transmission, drivetrain, tow rating where applicable, fuel rating, and required fuel grade.
  4. Check condition. Review service history, accident and title records, cold-start behavior, diagnostic scans, fluids, tires, brakes, cooling system, and evidence of modification or track use.
  5. Price ownership locally. Get insurance, fuel, scheduled-service, repair, and parts estimates for your address and driving pattern.
  6. Drive the route. Include traffic, parking, rough pavement, highway speeds, and the weather conditions that matter to you.
  7. Choose the risk you understand. A documented, supported car with slightly less dramatic specifications is often a better ownership decision than a more exotic example with uncertain history or scarce service support.

Bottom line on V8 versus V10

Choose the exact vehicle that best matches your use, budget, condition tolerance, and local support. The cited examples show why a cylinder-count shortcut fails: Dodge’s 710-hp supercharged V8 exceeds the published peak output of Audi’s 570-PS R8 V10 performance RWD, while Lamborghini’s Huracán Performante V10 reaches 640 CV at 8,000 rpm and offers a different high-revving character. Fuel economy, daily comfort, and ownership cost still depend on the complete car. Compare matched specifications, inspect the individual vehicle, and verify current parts and service availability before buying.
