A V8 sedan for about $10,000 is possible in the U.S., but at that price you are buying age, mileage, and someone else’s maintenance history. The better candidates are the cars whose records you can verify, not the ones with the biggest engine on paper. Treat every model below as a lead to investigate. The cheapest example is often the one with the longest repair list, so the purchase price alone tells you very little.
What the prices in this guide measure
Before comparing candidates, it helps to know what the numbers behind them are. Most of the figures come from an editorial guide to used V8 sedans. Its horsepower, model-year ranges, and price bands are editorial estimates. They are not controlled tests, audited market medians, or a sample of live listings. The guide does not state the geographic market its price bands reflect.
- Editorial price bands. Ranges such as “roughly $7,000 to $11,000 for a clean example” describe what a careful buyer might expect to see. They shift with region, season, and local supply.
- Asking prices, not sale prices. A September 25, 2026 U.S. listing snapshot from VinAssessment put the median asking price of 54 pre-owned 2007 Dodge Charger listings at $6,995. That figure is an asking price, not a transaction price.
- Trim mixes distort model-level prices. The same snapshot shows that trim matters a great deal for the Charger, so an all-trim median cannot be read as the price of a V8 car.
Candidates at a glance
The table lists each candidate with the years, engine, and power figures the editorial guide gives, along with its indicative price band. Where the guide does not give a value, the table says so.
| Candidate | Years and engine (per guide) | Power (per guide) | Indicative price (editorial estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrysler 300C | 2005–2014, 5.7-liter HEMI V8 | 340–363 hp, depending on year | Roughly $7,000–$11,000 for clean examples |
| Chevrolet Caprice PPV | 2011–2017, 6.0-liter L77 V8 (police package) | 355 hp | Roughly $8,000–$12,000 |
| Pontiac G8 GT | 2008–2009, 6.0-liter V8, rear-wheel drive | 361 hp | Usually $10,000–$15,000; higher-mileage examples may dip lower |
| Lexus LS400 / LS430 | 1995–2006, V8 (displacement not stated) | Not stated | High-mileage examples roughly $5,000–$9,000 |
| Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG | 2003–2006, supercharged 5.4-liter V8 | 469 hp, 516 lb-ft | Roughly $9,000–$14,000 |
| BMW 540i (E39) | 1997–2003, V8 (displacement not stated) | 282–290 hp | Automatics may appear at roughly $6,000–$10,000 |
| Jaguar XJR (X308 / X350) | Supercharged V8; model years not stated | 370–400 hp | Possibly under $10,000 asking |
| Dodge Charger (2007) | 2007 model; engine and trim vary | Not stated by trim | All-trim median asking price $6,995 (54 listings, September 25, 2026) |

Chrysler 300C (2005–2014, 5.7-liter HEMI)
The 300C fits a buyer who values comfortable highway cruising and straight-line power more than sharp handling. Check front suspension wear, the function of the electrical systems, the maintenance history, and how the engine runs cold and warm. Confirm the engine by VIN, because the power figure changes with the model year.
Chevrolet Caprice PPV (2011–2017, 6.0-liter L77)
Former police cars can offer value, but fleet use is not a bargain by default. Ask the seller directly about fleet use and idle hours. Inspect for signs of hard service, including the cooling system, suspension and differential wear, and missing or worn interior pieces. Price the car on its condition, not on its police-package reputation.

Pontiac G8 GT (2008–2009, 6.0-liter V8)
The G8 GT is rear-wheel drive, which suits buyers who want a traditional sedan layout. Its usual price band puts most examples above $10,000, so a car at or below budget should prompt questions about why it is priced low. Look for transmission service records and check the rear suspension bushings.
Lexus LS400 / LS430 (1995–2006)
These cars are smooth, comfort-focused V8 cruisers rather than sporting sedans. Their age makes aging rubber parts and suspension components a central concern. Prioritize documented service history, because an older Lexus with a thick file of receipts is a far safer bet than a clean-looking example with none.

Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG (2003–2006)
The E55 AMG offers a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 with 469 hp and 516 lb-ft, but it carries the highest repair exposure on this list. The guide flags air-suspension failures, the SBC brake system, and AMG maintenance costs. Most examples sit above the budget, and only a well-documented car with a dedicated repair reserve makes sense.
BMW 540i (E39, 1997–2003)
The 540i is a strong-handling sedan of its era, but its cheapest examples can hide deferred work. The guide points to cooling-system work, timing-chain guides, and suspension refreshes as material concerns. A low purchase price does not show that any of this maintenance was done, so ask for proof of each job.

Jaguar XJR (X308 / X350)
The supercharged XJR makes 370–400 hp and may be listed under $10,000. The guide warns about electrical and cooling-system neglect. Consider one only with strong records and a specialist inspection, not a general mechanic’s look-over.
Dodge Charger (2007)
The 2007 Charger is a case where the nameplate alone does not settle the question. The listing snapshot distinguishes the more expensive SRT8 from base examples, so confirm the engine and trim by VIN and the listing details before assuming a V8. Price the specific trim you are looking at, not the all-trim median.

Reliability: what the evidence can and cannot tell you
iSeeCars’ 2026 page describes its reliability rating as drawing on an analysis of more than 312 million vehicles, focused on longevity and the likelihood a vehicle reaches 200,000 miles. That describes the scale of its analysis. It does not show that any car on this list will reach that mileage. The same page says its broader quality score also considers resale value and safety, and the page does not give a comparable ranking for the V8 models here.
Reader demand for this kind of answer is clear. iSeeCars records the question “How reliable is the used sedans under $10k I want to buy?” The sources cited for this guide do not establish a validated reliability ranking for these candidates. Anyone who calls one of these cars “reliable” is relying on reputation or anecdote. Judge each car on its own records and inspection.
When the cheapest V8 is the most expensive
A purchase price is only the first cost. If a car needs a cooling-system overhaul, a suspension rebuild, or transmission work soon after purchase, the savings disappear quickly. This is most likely with the models the guide flags for deferred maintenance: the BMW 540i, the Jaguar XJR, the Mercedes E55 AMG, and any high-mileage fleet car. Walk away from a car if any of the following apply:
- The seller cannot produce service records, or the records show no work on the known weak points for that model.
- The title, ownership history, or accident history is unclear or does not match the seller’s account.
- The engine, trim, or model year does not match the VIN or the listing.
- The inspector finds leaks, overheating signs, or transmission behavior that the seller explains away without a repair record.
- Your budget has no room left for the first repair bill after the purchase price is paid.
Buying checklist
- Confirm the exact engine, trim, model year, and VIN. Broad model-year prices can combine very different powertrains and equipment.
- Review the title, accident history, ownership history, and service records. For a Caprice PPV, ask specifically about fleet use and idle hours.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection with a mechanic who knows the model. Ask for a written list of immediate repairs and deferred maintenance, and focus the inspection on the model-specific risks above.
- Have the diagnostic trouble codes checked, including pending codes where the tool supports them. A basic OBD-II scanner can help with this one task, but a clean scan cannot certify the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, or vehicle history.
- Test every electrical and comfort feature. Then inspect the tires, brakes, suspension, fluid leaks, cooling behavior, and transmission operation on a test drive.
- Budget for costs beyond the price. Keep money set aside for repairs, registration, insurance, fuel, and maintenance, so the car is not bought with the entire $10,000.
A test drive and a scan are useful screening steps, but neither replaces an independent mechanical inspection.
