Yes—but only with an electric vehicle and home system designed to work together. A compatible EV can send stored energy to a house, but the car alone cannot safely power household wiring. You need compatible conversion and switching equipment, a home installation that can isolate itself from the grid during an outage, and any required utility approvals. Compatibility depends on the vehicle, equipment, software, and location.
What vehicle-to-home power means
Vehicle-to-home (V2H) sends energy from an EV battery to a home. It is one type of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) energy transfer, but it is not the same as powering an appliance from a vehicle outlet or sending electricity to the grid.
| Capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| V2H | Supplies a home through compatible equipment. It can provide outage backup or, where supported and authorized, help shift household energy use. |
| V2L | Powers selected appliances directly from vehicle outlets or an adapter. That does not by itself connect the vehicle to household wiring. |
| V2G | Exports energy from the vehicle to the electric grid. This is a distinct operating mode and may require utility interconnection and program enrollment. |
Do not assume an EV advertised with V2L can provide V2H, or that a V2H installation can export power to the grid.
What equipment a home needs
An EV battery stores direct-current (DC) energy, while household circuits use alternating-current (AC) power. A V2H system must convert the energy, communicate with and control the vehicle, and safely manage the home’s connection to the grid. Depending on the system, the equipment can include:

During an outage, the house must be isolated from utility lines before it operates as an island. This protects utility workers and prevents the home from energizing the grid. Installation, inspection, utility review, and commissioning requirements vary by location.
Which vehicles and systems can work together?
V2H compatibility is specific to the vehicle and the equipment bundle—not simply the automaker or the presence of a large battery. Confirm the exact model, trim, model year, software, market, charger, and home configuration with the manufacturer and installer before buying. Do not assume that equipment from different brands will interoperate.

Approximate days = usable vehicle energy (kWh) ÷ home energy use (kWh per day)
Use usable battery energy rather than advertised gross capacity, and use the household’s actual consumption from bills or interval data. As an illustration—not a measured result or guarantee—Tesla’s January 2026 article divides a 90 kWh battery by 30 kWh of household use per day to arrive at about three days if the battery starts full.

The estimate is an upper-bound starting point, not a promise of runtime. A driving reserve, conversion losses, cold or hot weather, which circuits are backed up, and appliance startup demands all affect the result. If the car must remain ready to drive, set the minimum charge reserve first and count only the energy available above it. The roughly 30 kWh-per-day figure is attributed by Tesla to average U.S. household use and to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, but Tesla’s article does not specify the EIA year; it should not be treated as a current, independently verified household average.
Check power as well as energy
Battery energy, measured in kWh, helps estimate how long loads might run. Power, measured in kW, limits which loads can operate at the same time. Motors and compressors can also demand a brief startup surge. Ask the manufacturer or installer for the system’s continuous and peak output and the exact circuits it can support; the reviewed manufacturer information does not establish a neutral, current cross-brand specification comparison.

Solar may help, but only in a compatible setup
Solar can extend backup if it continues operating while the home is islanded and is configured to support or recharge the system. Whether it does so depends on the specific inverter, controls, and installation; an ordinary grid-tied solar system may not continue running during an outage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.V2H versus an outage-only vehicle connection
A vehicle outlet, adapter, or meter connection may offer another way to run selected circuits during an outage, but that does not make it equivalent to bidirectional V2H. The Associated Press reported on July 22, 2026, that Ford offers an outage-only approach using vehicle outlets, an adapter or cable, and a transfer switch. The report described selecting breakers and distinguished this method from Ford’s bidirectional Home Integration System. Check the precise equipment and permitted use before comparing solutions: an outage-only arrangement does not provide the same bidirectional operation.
Installation, safety, and utility checks
- Confirm vehicle eligibility. Ask the manufacturer to verify your exact model, trim, model year, software version, market, and supported V2H configuration.
- Get a site assessment. Have a qualified electrician or manufacturer-approved installer review panel capacity, backed-up circuits, equipment location, and any service or circuit work.
- Specify the complete system. Confirm the exact vehicle, charger, inverter, gateway or islanding controller, and transfer equipment combination. Find out whether it supports whole-home backup or only selected circuits.
- Check local approvals. Ask the utility and permitting authority about interconnection review, export limits, approved equipment, permits, and inspections. Puget Sound Energy’s public guidance describes system review and approval; its V2X program is described as a demonstration involving the Ford F-150 Lightning and Kia EV9, not as universal service availability.
- Require commissioning. Before relying on backup, have the installer test transfer and islanding behavior and confirm which loads work. Keep vehicle and system software current when the manufacturer requires it.
- Review battery and health-related needs. Check warranty terms and reserve controls. Do not assume a V2H kit can support a medical or life-critical device: GM specifically advises against using its cited kit for medical devices. Obtain explicit manufacturer and professional confirmation for essential equipment, with a separate backup plan where needed.
What V2H costs—and what to compare
Installed cost depends on the system bundle, electrical-panel work, installation, permits, utility requirements, and whether additional home equipment is needed. The following published U.S. figures refer to different types of solutions and are not like-for-like prices.
| Published figure | What it covers and when it was reported |
|---|---|
| $1,990 for hardware; standard installation starting at $1,800–$2,200 | Tesla-published Powershare Home Backup hardware and standard-installation figures in its January 22, 2026 article. Prices may change; verify current availability, scope, and pricing with Tesla and the installer. |
| Around $1,100 starting price | Associated Press report of July 22, 2026, describing Ford’s outage-only meter-connection solution with professional meter installation. It is not the price of Ford’s bidirectional Home Integration System and should not be compared as an equivalent V2H package. |
Before choosing a system, compare:
- Supported vehicle, model year, software, and market.
- Usable energy, continuous and peak output, and supported circuits.
- Whole-home versus selected-circuit backup and the design of the transfer and islanding equipment.
- Charge-reserve controls, outage behavior, and warranty terms.
- Installation scope, panel work, permitting, inspections, and utility approval.
- Total installed cost and any limits on export or grid-connected operation.
Do not assume V2H will save money or pay for itself. That depends on local electricity rates, utility programs, installation cost, usage, outages, and the vehicle’s battery and warranty considerations.
