Audi has since revealed the car as the 2027 RS5, and it is a high-performance plug-in hybrid rather than the combustion-only model the early report assumed. The bulges and the small rear spoiler are real, but the powertrain, body description and market timing have moved on from the original coverage.
What the early prototype report showed
Autoevolution’s early report described a prototype with a small rear wing, large dual exhaust outlets with butterfly valves, pumped-out wheel arches, vents behind the front wheels, and a reworked front bumper and grille. It contrasted that wing with the decklid spoiler on the S5 Sedan and called the RS5 a five-door liftback branded as a sedan. The same report discussed a twin-turbo V6 with plug-in hybrid assistance, but those powertrain details were predictions at the time, and its estimate of “600-odd” horsepower was speculation, not a confirmed figure.

What Audi revealed in February 2026
Audi revealed the car in February 2026. Audi’s February 19, 2026 press release describes the new RS 5 as Audi Sport’s first high-performance plug-in hybrid, with bespoke RS suspension and a new quattro drivetrain featuring Dynamic Torque Control. Car and Driver’s reveal coverage of the same date calls it the 2027 Audi RS5. Because the press-release download could not be read in full for this article, the launch claims above are limited to what the release states in its visible text.

The figures below are as reported by the outlets named, not independent test results. They are reveal-era figures and may change before final homologation or pricing.

Decoding the bulges and the wing
The headline’s two visual cues map to specific parts of the car:
- Big bulges: the broad fender flares over the wheel arches, which house the 20- or 21-inch wheels and go with the wider RS bodywork. The early report also noted vents behind the front wheels.
- Tiny wing: a small rear decklid spoiler. Car and Driver calls it a ducktail. MotorTrend describes it as subtle, which fits the early observation of a small wing rather than the larger spoiler on the S5 Sedan.
- Exhaust and front end: large dual outlets were visible on the prototype, and the front bumper and grille were reworked in the early report. Reveal coverage also mentions distinctive lighting and a digital interior, which the early spy shots could not show.
Sedan or hatchback?
The early report called the car a five-door liftback branded as a sedan. Reveal and first-drive coverage describes a sedan-like four-door hatchback. Both descriptions point to the same shape: a four-door body with a rear hatch, not a conventional three-box sedan with a separate trunk. Audi’s marketing uses the sedan name, so the body is best described in those terms.

U.S. availability and timing
Car and Driver’s February coverage did not settle U.S. price or availability. MotorTrend’s March 3, 2026 first drive reported an expected U.S. arrival in 2027 and said the Avant body would not be offered in the United States. Those are reported expectations from March 2026, not a current Audi sales announcement. Prices, trim levels and dealer timing should be checked against Audi’s current U.S. site and an authorized dealer before purchase planning.

- Did not hold up: the purely combustion-era powertrain assumption. The production car is a plug-in hybrid with a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6.
- Still unconfirmed by the cited sources: the final U.S. price and the exact European launch sequence.
For readers following the car from spy shots to showroom, the reveal figures are the ones to use, and the early horsepower estimate should be set aside.
