Kelley Blue Book lists a national dealer fair-purchase benchmark of $25,100 for a 2024 Pathfinder S, while Nissan’s current U.S. lineup shows a Kicks SR AWD Premium with its Premium Package and two-tone premium paint at $31,995 as shown. That is a $6,895 difference before taxes, destination, title, registration, options, dealer charges and local-market changes.
The comparison is not universal. A 2024 Pathfinder Platinum has a $35,100 KBB benchmark, above the displayed Kicks price; the Rock Creek and SL are close to it. The sensible choice depends on the exact Pathfinder trim, mileage, condition, drivetrain, fees and whether you need a three-row vehicle or a smaller five-seat crossover.

The price gap is real, but only for certain Pathfinder trims
Kelley Blue Book’s figures are national fair-purchase benchmarks for typical-condition 2024 Pathfinders bought from a dealer. KBB says mileage, equipment, condition, model style and location can move the actual price substantially, and the cited values were current through October 12, 2026. They are market benchmarks, not guaranteed prices for a particular low-mileage listing.
Nissan’s $31,995 figure is an “as shown” price for a current Kicks SR AWD Premium configuration with the Premium Package and two-tone premium paint. Nissan states that its displayed MSRP excludes tax, title, license, options and destination charges, and dealers set the final selling price. It is therefore an MSRP reference rather than a negotiated transaction quote.

On those references, the Pathfinder S is $6,895 below the displayed Kicks configuration, the SV is $3,995 below it, and the Rock Creek and SL are within roughly $700 of it. The Platinum is $3,105 higher. A newer model year does not automatically mean a lower price: KBB’s 2023 Pathfinder values range from $24,700 for an SV to $31,800 for a Platinum, with the 2023 S listed at $25,800.
Why the two prices are not an apples-to-apples deal
You are comparing a used-vehicle valuation with a new-vehicle MSRP. The Pathfinder number assumes a typical-condition used example, while the Kicks number describes a new vehicle in one specific, optioned configuration. A dealer may price a clean, low-mileage Pathfinder above KBB’s benchmark, or discount a new Kicks below its displayed MSRP. Sales tax, financing, destination, documentation fees, accessories and registration can erase or widen the headline gap.
Before deciding that one is cheaper, put both candidates on the same worksheet:
- Record the exact model year, trim, engine, drivetrain and factory options.
- Use the Pathfinder’s actual odometer reading, title status, accident history and condition rather than the word “lightly used.”
- Add destination, dealer fees, taxes, title and registration to the Kicks quote.
- Ask for an itemized out-the-door price for each vehicle in your state.
- Compare financing terms separately; a lower purchase price can still produce a higher monthly payment if the used vehicle has a shorter loan term or higher interest rate.
Powertrain: V6 capability versus four-cylinder efficiency
Pathfinder V6 output
The 2022 Pathfinder’s standard engine is a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Those figures identify the 2022 model year and should not be transferred automatically to every Pathfinder listing; verify the model year and configuration by VIN, window sticker or the manufacturer’s specifications.

A V6 Pathfinder is the more compelling choice when you regularly carry several adults, tow within the vehicle’s rating, climb steep grades or want stronger acceleration with a loaded cabin. The trade-off is that a larger three-row SUV generally consumes more fuel and costs more to operate than a small crossover. The actual fuel, tire and maintenance bills depend on mileage, driving conditions, tires and service history.
Kicks four-cylinder output and EPA estimates
Nissan’s 2026 Kicks brochure lists a 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 141 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque. EPA estimates are 28 mpg city, 35 mpg highway and 31 mpg combined with front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is rated at 27/34/30 mpg. EPA results are estimates, not guarantees, and real mileage varies with temperature, speed, payload, terrain, traffic and driving style.
The Kicks’ lower output is adequate for commuting and urban use, especially when low operating cost and easy maneuverability matter more than towing or heavy-load performance. Take an extended test drive on your normal roads, including highway merges, before assuming the four-cylinder feels sufficient.

Nissan describes the 2025 Pathfinder as seating up to eight people. Its listed cargo capacity is 16.6 cubic feet with all rows upright and 80.5 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. Those measurements describe different seat configurations, so do not compare the maximum number with a five-seat vehicle’s everyday cargo figure.

The 2026 Kicks brochure lists five seats. It is easier to park and usually easier to load in tight urban spaces, but it cannot provide the Pathfinder’s third-row capacity. If you carry six or more people, install multiple child seats, transport bulky sports equipment or need a large, flat load floor, the Pathfinder’s layout may justify paying more for a higher trim or accepting used-car ownership.
Which Pathfinder trim makes the comparison work?
Pathfinder S: the clearest value case
At $25,100 in KBB’s typical-condition benchmark, the 2024 S creates the largest apparent saving against the $31,995 Kicks display. Focus on service records, tires, brakes, recalls, title history and accident repairs because a low price can reflect deferred maintenance rather than a bargain.
Pathfinder SV: a middle-ground purchase
The $28,000 SV benchmark remains below the displayed Kicks price while moving up the Pathfinder range. Compare the actual equipment list instead of assuming every convenience feature is included; model-year packages and dealer-installed accessories can differ.
Rock Creek and SL: nearly the same money
KBB’s $31,300 Rock Creek and $31,600 SL benchmarks are close to Nissan’s $31,995 Kicks reference. At this point, the decision is primarily about size, seating, condition and ownership history rather than a large upfront saving. A well-documented Pathfinder may be attractive, but a new Kicks provides a new-vehicle warranty experience and avoids unknown prior use.

Platinum: not a cheaper alternative
The 2024 Platinum benchmark is $35,100, which is above the displayed Kicks configuration. Choose it for its equipment and Pathfinder capability, not because it is the budget option.
How to evaluate a lightly used Pathfinder
“Lightly used” has no universal mileage cutoff in the cited KBB material. Treat it as a description that must be verified, not as proof of value.
- Confirm identity. Match the VIN on the vehicle, title, service records and window sticker. Verify model year, S/SV/Rock Creek/SL/Platinum trim, front- or all-wheel drive and engine.
- Check history. Obtain a vehicle-history report and look for salvage or rebuilt branding, flood damage, odometer inconsistencies, repeated accidents, commercial use and open recalls.
- Inspect wear items. Measure tire tread, inspect brake rotors and pads, check windshield and body-panel repairs, and look underneath for leaks or impact damage. Uneven tire wear can indicate alignment or suspension problems.
- Review maintenance. Request dated invoices or dealer records. Confirm oil changes, transmission service where applicable, cooling-system work, brake service and completion of recall campaigns.
- Arrange an independent inspection. A mechanic who is not paid by the seller should scan for diagnostic codes, test the drivetrain, inspect suspension and verify that safety systems operate correctly.
- Drive it cold and hot. Check startup noise, transmission behavior, braking, steering, highway tracking, cabin electronics, climate control and all-row access. A short dealer loop can hide problems that appear after the vehicle warms up.
- Recalculate the deal. Subtract immediate repairs, tires, brakes, missing keys, transportation costs and any warranty purchase from the negotiated price.
How to compare the Kicks quote fairly
Ask the Nissan dealer for a written buyer’s order showing selling price, destination, taxes, title, registration, documentation charges, accessories, protection products and financing assumptions. The $31,995 displayed figure already represents a particular SR AWD Premium configuration with a package and two-tone paint; a differently equipped Kicks is not the same comparison.

Ownership trade-offs beyond purchase price
Reasons to favor the Pathfinder
- Three-row seating and substantially greater maximum cargo volume.
- V6 power and the nine-speed automatic in the cited 2022 specification.
- Potentially lower entry cost on S or SV trims, even before negotiating.
- More useful capacity for families, passengers and bulky cargo.
Reasons to favor the Kicks
- New-vehicle condition and no unknown previous owner.
- Five-seat packaging that is easier to maneuver and park in crowded areas.
- Lower stated EPA fuel-consumption estimates than a larger V6 SUV, although actual results vary.
- A straightforward comparison based on a current, itemized dealer quote rather than a used-car benchmark.
Insurance, fuel, tires, depreciation, financing and repairs can outweigh a $3,000–$7,000 purchase-price difference over several years. Obtain insurance quotes for both VINs and estimate annual fuel from your own mileage before signing.
A practical decision rule
Choose the Pathfinder when you genuinely need its seating, cargo room or V6 performance and can document the individual vehicle’s condition. The 2024 S and SV are the trims most likely to deliver a purchase-price advantage against the displayed Kicks. Choose the Kicks when five seats are enough, you prioritize a new vehicle and your dealer’s complete out-the-door price remains competitive after destination and fees.
Do not let the phrase “lightly used” substitute for an inspection, and do not treat Nissan’s displayed MSRP as the final price. Compare matching trims, verify every model-year specification, and make the decision from two written out-the-door numbers.
