Short answer: neither used MPV is a universal winner. A well-maintained Ertiga can be the sensible choice when you want a compact, economical seven-seater and find a correctly priced petrol or CNG example. A specific Innova can justify a higher purchase price when you regularly carry adults and luggage, need its larger diesel-powered configuration, or value its heavier-duty role. Compare the exact year, generation, engine, fuel, transmission, variant, condition and local rules—not just the badges.
The name “Innova” covers several materially different vehicles, while Ertiga engines and equipment changed by generation and year. The figures below are therefore tied to the particular versions and sources that reported them.

Start with the exact used cars, not the model names
A used-car comparison fails before the inspection if the two listings are described only as “Innova” and “Ertiga.” Toyota’s archived specification sheet cited here describes an older 2.5-litre diesel Innova and is not a specification for every later Innova. Maruti Suzuki’s current Ertiga page describes the present K15C petrol range and CNG versions, while older used Ertigas had different engines and equipment.

- registration year and, for an Innova, the generation (including whether it is an older Innova or a later Crysta);
- engine size, fuel and emissions standard;
- manual or automatic transmission;
- trim or variant, seating configuration and factory equipment;
- odometer reading, owners, accident or flood history and service documentation;
- asking price, city and any restrictions on diesel use in that area.
A listing that misstates the engine or variant can make a seemingly attractive comparison meaningless. Verify the vehicle physically and through manufacturer or registration records before negotiating.

Space, seating and everyday practicality
Do not treat “seven-seater” as a comfort rating
Both vehicles can be advertised as family three-row MPVs, but the number of seats does not tell you whether three adults can use the second row, whether an adult can enter the third row without contortion, or whether your luggage fits behind it. The current Ertiga page lists 209 litres of boot capacity with all three rows in use and 803 litres when the third row is folded. Those are manufacturer figures for the current configuration; a used Ertiga from another generation may differ.
The archived Innova sheet documents seven- and eight-seat layouts, so even two Innovas may have different second-row and third-row arrangements. Check whether the listing has individual captain-style seats or a bench, how the third row folds, and whether the belts and head restraints are present and functional.
Use your real passenger and luggage pattern
During the viewing, place the people who will actually travel in the vehicle. Have an adult sit in every row, operate the sliding or folding mechanisms, and check knee, shoulder and head room. Then load the normal holiday bags, school equipment, groceries or mobility aids with the third row occupied. Measure the remaining luggage space rather than relying on a brochure number.
- For occasional children in the third row, easy access and usable anchor points may matter more than maximum volume.
- For seven adults, compare cushion length, ventilation, shoulder room and how often passengers must climb past a folded seat.
- For airport or intercity trips, test whether all passengers and luggage fit without blocking the driver’s view or the tailgate.
- Inspect the spare-wheel location and the condition of the folding hardware; a damaged mechanism can erase the claimed cargo advantage.
Engines, transmissions and fuel choices
Current Ertiga claims are not guarantees for an older car
Maruti Suzuki’s current Ertiga listing specifies a K15C 1.5-litre petrol engine with manual and automatic choices, and CNG versions are also offered. The company’s February 2024 million-sales release reports certified figures of up to 20.51 km/l for petrol and 26.11 km/kg for CNG. These are manufacturer-published, test-agency figures under the stated certification rules, not a promise that every used car will achieve them in traffic.
Driving style, tyre pressure, load, air-conditioning use, traffic and mechanical condition can change consumption. CNG economy also depends on reliable access to stations and the time required to queue or detour for refuelling. Confirm which fuel system the particular used car has, whether the CNG installation is factory-fitted, and that the fuel system appears in its registration and insurance records.

Second-generation Ertiga powertrains vary sharply
Autocar India’s June 4, 2021 used-buying guide for the second-generation Ertiga, introduced in 2018, says it initially offered a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.3-litre diesel. Later versions also included petrol-CNG and a 1.5-litre diesel. The two diesel engines were discontinued in April 2020 as BS6 norms took effect. Therefore, a 2018, 2019 or early-2020 listing may have a powertrain that is unavailable in a newer car, with different running costs, emissions equipment and resale demand.

Read the registration and engine-bay identification before assuming that a “2019 Ertiga” is petrol, diesel or CNG. A seller’s headline or a copied online specification is not enough.
The archived Innova example is a larger diesel vehicle
Toyota’s archived specification sheet cited for this comparison documents an older 2.5-litre diesel Innova. That configuration helps explain why an older Innova can feel like a different category of MPV from a compact petrol Ertiga, particularly when loaded, but it cannot be applied to every Innova generation. Later Innova and Crysta vehicles changed engines, equipment and prices.
Use the exact engine and transmission when estimating fuel spend. Do not infer that every Innova is diesel, that every Ertiga is petrol, or that a newer Crysta shares the archived vehicle’s specifications.
Running costs: what is known and what is not
There is no matched, independent total-cost-of-ownership dataset in the cited material that proves one model is cheaper to maintain. A smaller petrol or CNG Ertiga may suit a lower annual mileage and urban use, while a particular diesel Innova may suit frequent full-load highway work. That is a use-case decision, not a reliability verdict.
Build a vehicle-specific budget
- Fuel: record your annual kilometres, local petrol, diesel and CNG prices, and the consumption you observe during a meaningful test drive. Keep the manufacturer’s 20.51 km/l petrol and 26.11 km/kg CNG figures as certified reference points, not as your forecast.
- Scheduled service: obtain the seller’s invoices and ask the authorised workshop for the next due service, consumables and any overdue work. Missing records should be priced as risk, not treated as proof of low maintenance.
- Wear items: budget for tyres, brakes, battery, clutch or automatic-transmission servicing, suspension components and air-conditioning repairs according to inspection findings.
- Insurance and taxes: compare premiums and applicable registration or road-tax requirements for the vehicle’s age and fuel type in your state.
- Restrictions: check current local rules for older diesel vehicles, low-emission zones and transfer requirements before buying an otherwise attractive Innova.
Ask the inspector to separate urgent repairs from items that can be monitored. A low purchase price can disappear if tyres, brakes, suspension and deferred service are all due immediately.

Resale: useful evidence, but not a direct Innova-versus-Ertiga result
An Autocar India article dated July 11, 2026, using Spinny transaction data from January through August 2025 in nine cities, reported average selling prices of ₹11.16 lakh for one-year-old MPVs, ₹10.50 lakh for three-year-old MPVs and ₹7.47 lakh for five-year-old MPVs. The corresponding average depreciation figures were 18.15%, 33.10% and 38.5%.
The study found Ertiga had the flattest depreciation trend among the MPVs it included. It explicitly excluded Innova Crysta and Innova Hycross because transaction data was limited, so the results do not establish that an Ertiga retains value better than an Innova. The segment averages are not price guides for either named car.
For a real purchase, collect several local comparisons with the same year, variant, fuel, transmission, mileage, ownership count and condition. An older, well-documented Innova may command a different market from a high-mileage example with uncertain emissions compliance; an Ertiga CNG in a city with abundant stations may not price like a petrol automatic in another region.
Used Ertiga inspection checklist
The following checks come from Autocar India’s June 2021 used-Ertiga guide and should be combined with a full independent inspection.
Brakes and running gear
Inspect the front brake pads and rear drums for wear. Ask for measurements or photographs rather than accepting “brakes are fine.” During the drive, check for steering pull, vibration under braking, grinding, a soft pedal or a parking brake that does not hold. These symptoms require diagnosis before you agree on a price.
Touchscreen and electrical equipment
On trims equipped with the SmartPlay touchscreen, test the display, audio, phone connection, steering controls, reverse-camera image and every physical button. Confirm that the system starts consistently and that a seller’s claim of a simple software issue is supported by a repair estimate.

Mild-hybrid stop/start
Where the car is fitted with mild-hybrid stop/start hardware, verify that the function operates under appropriate conditions and that no warning light is displayed. A non-working feature may indicate a weak battery, sensor fault or other issue; have the system scanned rather than assuming it is normal.

2019 motor-generator recall
Autocar’s guide identifies affected petrol Ertigas manufactured from January 1 through November 21, 2019, for a motor-generator-unit recall. Check the exact VIN with Maruti Suzuki or an authorised service centre and obtain written confirmation that any remedy was completed. A registration year alone cannot establish whether a car is affected.
General condition
- Match the odometer to service invoices, inspection records and wear on pedals, steering wheel and seats.
- Look for uneven panel gaps, paint overspray, weld marks, water lines, damp carpets and corrosion that could indicate accident or flood damage.
- Inspect tyres for age, matching brands and uneven wear, then check suspension for leaks, noise and excessive bounce.
- Test the clutch or automatic transmission when cold and warm, including hill starts, reverse and low-speed manoeuvres.
- Scan the car for stored fault codes and compare the VIN with service and recall records.
What to check on an Innova
The cited sources do not provide an Innova-specific failure ranking or a matched reliability study. Treat every Innova generation as an individual used vehicle and commission an independent inspection.
For an older diesel example, pay particular attention to cold starting, smoke, injector or turbo noises, clutch bite, gearbox operation, cooling-system temperature and evidence of oil or coolant leaks. Confirm that the emissions equipment required for that vehicle’s standard is present and functioning. On any automatic, check for delayed engagement, shuddering or unexplained warning lights. These are inspection procedures, not claims that the model has a documented universal defect.
Review structural repairs, flood exposure, underbody damage, suspension wear, air-conditioning performance and the condition of all three rows. Verify that the seating configuration matches the registration and that belts, head restraints and child-seat anchors are complete.

A practical buying process for the two listings
- Shortlist comparable cars. Keep the year range, fuel, transmission, mileage and city similar. Do not compare a high-mileage diesel Innova with a newer petrol Ertiga and call the price difference a model premium.
- Verify identity. Match the VIN, registration, engine number where required, ownership history and insurance documents. Resolve discrepancies before a test drive.
- Drive both on the same route. Include traffic, a rough surface, a hill or ramp and a highway section if possible. Carry representative passengers and luggage.
- Commission an inspection. Use an independent professional who can lift the vehicle, scan electronics and document paint, structure, brakes, tyres, suspension, engine, transmission and water damage.
- Confirm recalls and service. Check the Ertiga motor-generator campaign where relevant and obtain manufacturer or workshop records for either vehicle. A seller’s verbal assurance is not completion evidence.
- Price the repairs. Get written estimates for urgent, near-term and cosmetic work. Deduct urgent work from the offer and retain a reserve for age-related repairs.
- Check ownership legality and local use. Confirm transfer rules, loan release, insurance validity, emissions requirements and any diesel-age restrictions in your state or city.
- Walk away when the evidence does not add up. Inconsistent mileage, missing documents, structural damage, unresolved warning lights or pressure to skip inspection are reasons to reject that car, regardless of its badge.
Which one fits your use case?
Choose the Ertiga when compact economy is the priority
A correctly identified, well-maintained Ertiga is a plausible choice when most trips are urban or mixed, you usually carry a small family, and petrol or CNG access suits your routes. The current configuration offers a 1.5-litre petrol engine, manual or automatic choices and CNG versions; the manufacturer’s published economy claims can help frame expectations, but your test drive and records matter more.

It is especially important to compare the cost of a particular Ertiga against an Innova rather than assuming the smaller car is automatically a bargain. A neglected Ertiga with worn brakes, failed electronics or incomplete recall work is not an economical purchase.
Choose the Innova when the exact vehicle earns its premium
A specific Innova can make sense when you frequently carry adults in all rows, travel long distances fully loaded, or need the characteristics of the larger diesel-powered configuration documented in Toyota’s older specification sheet. The premium is justified only if the vehicle’s condition, service history, legal usability and expected workload support it.
Do not pay an “Innova premium” for a car with uncertain history, excessive mileage, accident repairs or imminent diesel restrictions. Compare it with another Innova of the same generation and with a similarly equipped Ertiga after inspection costs are included.

Reject both candidates if neither provides verifiable history, a satisfactory inspection or a realistic ownership budget. Waiting for a better-maintained example is safer than choosing a model on reputation alone. The comparison is useful only after each car passes the same evidence-based checks.
Bottom-line decision rule
Buy the Ertiga if the exact car’s condition and price are compelling and its petrol or CNG configuration matches your annual use. Buy the Innova only when a particular generation’s space, load-carrying role and powertrain justify the additional purchase and running-cost exposure after inspection. There is no evidence here for a universal winner, a guaranteed reliability advantage or a direct resale victory for either badge.
